Opus is a lossy audio codec designed for interactive speech and music. It can encode audio across a wide range of bitrates and delays, but that does not mean every streaming service accepts Opus for live broadcast ingest. For streamers, the key distinction is between what Opus can encode, what a transport such as WebRTC can carry, and what a particular platform allows you to send.

What Opus is

Opus is an audio codec: software encodes audio into a compressed stream, and a decoder reconstructs it for playback. The IETF’s RFC 6716 defines it for interactive applications including voice over IP, videoconferencing, in-game chat, and live distributed music. Its design combines linear prediction (LP), useful for speech, with modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) coding, supporting both speech and music use cases. RFC 6716 is an IETF Standards Track document published in September 2012. Read RFC 6716.

Opus is not a microphone type, a streaming service, or a complete broadcast workflow. It is one encoding choice in a chain that also includes an application, a transport, and a receiving service. Each layer can impose its own constraints.

What the bitrate and delay figures mean

RFC 6716 specifies Opus bitrates from 6 to 510 kbit/s and algorithmic delay from 5 to 65.2 milliseconds. These are capabilities of the codec, not universal streaming presets or guarantees that increasing bitrate will always produce a perceptible improvement.

For 20 ms frames, the RFC gives example “sweet spots”: 8–12 kbit/s for narrowband speech, 16–20 kbit/s for wideband speech, 28–40 kbit/s for fullband speech, 48–64 kbit/s for fullband mono music, and 64–128 kbit/s for fullband stereo music. Treat these as codec guidance in the RFC’s context, not as recommended settings for every encoder or platform. The useful choice depends on the material, mono or stereo channel count, bandwidth mode, frame size, encoder options, and transport constraints. RFC 6716 details Opus’s modes and bitrate guidance.

Why Opus says 48 kHz but does not encode 48 kHz of audio bandwidth

Opus defines five audio bandwidths, each with a corresponding effective sample rate:

Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen USB-C Audio Interface
  • The new generation of the songwriter's interface: Plug in your mic and guitar and let Scarlett Solo 4th Gen bring big studio sound to wherever you make music
  • Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios
  • Find your signature sound: Scarlett 4th Gen's improved Air mode lifts vocals and guitars to the front of the mix, adding musical presence and rich harmonic drive to your recordings
  • All you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins
  • Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
Bandwidth mode Audio bandwidth Effective sample rate
Narrowband 4 kHz 8 kHz
Medium-band 6 kHz 12 kHz
Wideband 8 kHz 16 kHz
Super-wideband 12 kHz 24 kHz
Fullband 20 kHz 48 kHz

The 48 kHz figure for fullband is the effective sample rate, not an indication that Opus carries 48 kHz of audio bandwidth. The RFC states that Opus does not code audio above 20 kHz. See RFC 6716’s bandwidth definitions.

Is Opus good for streaming?

Opus is relevant to real-time audio, especially browser-based communication. WebRTC’s audio requirements refer to Opus, and RFC 7875 specifies mandatory Opus implementation for WebRTC endpoints. That establishes Opus’s role in WebRTC; it does not establish that YouTube, Twitch, or another service currently accepts Opus as live broadcast ingest.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Before choosing Opus for a broadcast, check the current official encoder documentation for the exact receiving platform and the software version you use. Codec support in an application or transport does not by itself guarantee that a platform’s ingest endpoint supports that codec. The sources cited here describe Opus and WebRTC, not current platform-by-platform live ingest settings.

What to consider when choosing an Opus setup

  • Compatibility: Confirm that the application, transport, and receiving service all support the codec in the specific workflow. A WebRTC requirement is not a broadcast-ingest specification.
  • Content and channels: Speech, music, mono, and stereo can call for different bitrate choices. The RFC’s example ranges distinguish among these cases.
  • Latency: Opus specifies algorithmic delay across a range, but the full end-to-end delay also depends on the application and transport.
  • Recording and delivery: Consider whether the workflow needs a different format for recording, export, or archive, rather than assuming the live codec is the right format for every use.

Opus can transmit mono or stereo frames, and its encoder parameters can change dynamically without stopping the stream, with in-band signaling that lets the decoder interpret the stream. Those are codec capabilities; an application’s interface, transport, or receiving service may still limit what can be used. RFC 6716 describes these capabilities.

Opus licensing in brief

The Opus project describes the specification as freely available and says the reference encoder and decoder can be integrated into applications, including commercial products, under its stated terms. The project also describes royalty-free patent licenses for compatible use and notes a patent-litigation condition. Read the Opus project licensing page for the terms; this summary is not legal advice.

Keep a YouTube stream running without encoding it yourself

Opus is an audio codec, not a way to keep a video stream online around the clock. If your separate goal is to run uploaded video as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream a live camera feed.
