VOD describes how a viewer accesses content—not whether it is free, paid, ad-supported, downloadable, or available in a particular country.
How video on demand works
On a VOD service, a viewer opens the service on a supported device, selects an available title, and starts playback. The catalogue may be delivered by streaming or, where the service permits it, downloading. In contrast, a linear channel follows a schedule: the channel determines what is playing at a given time.
VOD is a way of making and accessing video, not one specific business model. A documentary might be included in a subscription, rented or purchased individually, supported by advertising, or offered for an extra charge. The service and the particular title determine the terms. The Japan Fair Trade Commission describes VOD as an internet-delivered catalogue from which users select content; Amazon Ads also explains the term and its common commercial models. See the Japan Fair Trade Commission overview of VOD and Amazon Ads’ guide to VOD models.
What do SVOD, TVOD, AVOD, and PVOD mean?
These abbreviations describe ways a VOD service may provide or fund access. A service can combine models, and the exact terms can differ by provider.

| Term | Meaning | What it means for a viewer |
|---|---|---|
| SVOD | Subscription video on demand | Pay a subscription for access to a catalogue. Which titles are included, whether ads appear, and other terms vary by service. |
| TVOD | Transactional video on demand | Pay for an individual title, commonly by renting it for temporary viewing or purchasing it under the provider’s terms. |
| AVOD | Advertising-based video on demand | Select and watch on-demand content with advertising helping to fund access. |
| PVOD | Premium video on demand | Pay an additional charge for content or access the service designates as premium. What qualifies depends on the service. |
These labels do not guarantee that a particular title is included, ad-free, or available to you. For example, Google’s partner documentation distinguishes rental, purchase, subscription, and advertising-supported policy labels. Its rental and purchase terms are platform-specific, so do not assume every provider uses identical definitions. See Google Movies and TV Partner Help’s license-type definitions.
VOD vs. FAST: on-demand titles or scheduled channels?
FAST means free ad-supported streaming TV. FAST services generally present scheduled programming on streamed channels; viewers tune in to what is playing rather than selecting each program from an on-demand catalogue. AVOD and FAST can both include advertising, but AVOD describes selecting individual content on demand, while FAST is organized around a channel schedule. The distinction is about how viewers access the programming, not simply whether ads appear.

VOD vs. OTT: access timing vs. delivery
OTT, or “over the top,” refers to video delivered over the internet outside traditional cable or satellite distribution. VOD refers to a viewer choosing when to access a video. The terms describe different things: a service can be both OTT and VOD, but they are not synonyms. For background, see Amazon Ads’ guide to OTT.
What VOD does—and does not—tell you about a documentary
If a documentary is labelled VOD, that tells you it can be watched on demand. It does not tell you the price or whether the title is included in a subscription. Before choosing a service or starting a title, check:

Availability and terms can differ by title, service, device, and country. VOD alone does not guarantee that a video can be downloaded or watched everywhere.
Does VOD have a legal or regulatory meaning?
In ordinary use, VOD describes content viewers can select to watch at a chosen time. Legal definitions and obligations depend on the jurisdiction and the service. For example, Ofcom gives UK examples of on-demand programme services—including catch-up television, online film services, and archive libraries—and explains that specific criteria determine whether a service falls under the UK’s ODPS rules. That UK regulatory scope should not be treated as a universal legal definition. For a compliance question, check current guidance from the regulator in the relevant jurisdiction. See Ofcom’s guidance on on-demand programme services.

What VOD means for creators who also run a live channel
VOD is about choosing a video to watch at any time; a live stream is a broadcast happening on a schedule or in real time. A creator may use uploaded videos for either kind of viewing experience, but the terms are not interchangeable. StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos: add a YouTube stream key and go live, and it loops the video from the cloud. Learn more at StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
