Balanced audio connections are more resistant to interference picked up along a cable; unbalanced connections are often perfectly adequate for short runs in a quiet setup. Neither wiring type guarantees better sound or stream quality. The right choice depends on the ports at both ends, cable route, and whether you are actually hearing noise.
What balanced vs. unbalanced audio means
“Balanced” and “unbalanced” describe how an analog audio connection carries a signal and how its receiving circuit handles interference. They do not describe a digital-streaming setting or a guaranteed difference in audio quality.
Balanced connections
A balanced connection uses two signal conductors plus a separate shield. A compatible balanced input can reject noise picked up similarly by both signal conductors. This makes balanced wiring useful for longer cable runs and electrically busy surroundings when both connected devices support it. Focusrite summarizes the distinction: “Balanced cables are far better at rejecting interference noise than unbalanced cables.” (Focusrite Support, updated January 29, 2026.)
Unbalanced connections
An unbalanced connection uses one conductor for the signal and the ground or shield as its return. Interference picked up by the cable can become part of the signal. Unbalanced connections are common and can work well over short runs in quiet environments, or when the equipment has only unbalanced ports.

How to choose for a streaming setup
- Check both devices. Look at the port labels and manuals for the audio source and the receiving device. Focusrite advises using balanced cables when connecting equipment with balanced inputs and outputs. A cable cannot give an unbalanced port a balanced circuit.
- Identify the actual signal and connector. XLR is commonly balanced; TRS can carry balanced mono; TS and RCA are commonly unbalanced. These are conventions, not compatibility guarantees. Confirm what each particular port supports.
- Consider the route. Balanced wiring is more useful when the cable must run farther or pass near electrically noisy equipment. There is no universal maximum length that applies to every setup; noise susceptibility depends on the equipment and surroundings.
- Listen for the problem. If a short unbalanced connection in a quiet room has no audible noise, replacing it with a balanced cable does not promise an audible improvement. If there is hum, first determine whether the cause is cable pickup, a ground loop, or something else.
Common connections and their caveats
| Setup | Practical approach |
|---|---|
| Audio interface to powered monitors | If both devices provide balanced line ports, use the matching cable, such as TRS-to-TRS or TRS-to-XLR. Follow the exact port labels and manuals. |
| Consumer device with RCA output | RCA is commonly unbalanced. Use a suitable connection to the receiving input; the connection remains unbalanced unless appropriate conversion equipment is used. |
| Instrument pickup to audio interface | Instrument outputs are generally unbalanced. Use an input that accepts instrument level; a balanced cable does not change the source’s wiring or level. |
| TRS headphone output | A TRS jack may carry unbalanced stereo, not balanced mono. Focusrite describes its headphone outputs this way. Check the device documentation before choosing a cable. |
| Balanced output to an unbalanced input over a long run | Roland’s recording guide describes running balanced cable for most of the distance, then using a direct box or matching transformer near the unbalanced input. Confirm suitability for the specific devices. |
Is XLR better than TRS?
Not inherently. XLR and TRS are connector formats; the device’s port wiring and signal type determine what the connection does. XLR is commonly used for balanced audio, and TRS can carry balanced mono, but a TRS jack can also carry unbalanced stereo. A balanced stereo pair normally uses separate connections for left and right. Choose the cable ends that match the documented ports rather than treating one connector shape as automatically superior.
Can I use a TRS cable with RCA or TS gear?
Only if the cable and connection suit the signal and ports at both ends. RCA and TS are commonly unbalanced, while TRS may be balanced mono or unbalanced stereo. A TRS cable alone cannot convert an unbalanced source to balanced. Check the manuals for the exact devices and use a suitable cable or conversion device where needed; do not assume that matching plugs mean compatible wiring.

Does this affect the quality of a YouTube stream?
Balanced wiring can help prevent interference from entering an analog audio path before the signal reaches the streaming device. It does not, by itself, improve digital encoding, bitrate, or the stream’s sound quality. The evidence for these connection principles does not establish a universal audible result for every setup. If your existing connection is clean, changing cable type alone is not a reason to expect a better-sounding stream.
