To host a Live Q&A on YouTube, schedule or start a live stream or Premiere, open the live chat’s Add menu, choose Start a Q&A, and enter a prompt. Viewers submit questions in chat; you select one from the Questions list and pin it at the top of chat while you answer.
Before you schedule or start
YouTube says your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube identifies mobile, webcam, and encoder as stream types; mobile streaming has separate eligibility requirements, so check the current mobile rules if you plan to use a phone. Choose the stream method that suits your event
- Mobile: Useful for a quick update or an event you are hosting directly from a phone or tablet. Confirm mobile eligibility before the event.
- Webcam: A computer-based option that lets you choose a camera and microphone in YouTube’s webcam setup. A webcam is needed for this route, not for every type of live stream. Create a live stream via webcam
- Encoder: Use this route if you want an encoder-based production. YouTube gives Wirecast as an example of encoding software; the Live Q&A feature itself is part of YouTube chat and does not establish a need for paid encoder software.
Schedule ahead if you want viewers to plan
When you schedule a stream, it may appear as upcoming in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers can select Notify me. For the webcam route, create or schedule the stream, add its title and description, choose privacy, then confirm the camera and microphone before going live. Manage live stream settings
Start the Live Q&A on a computer
- Schedule or start a live stream or Premiere. The Q&A controls are in the live chat after the event is set up or underway.
- Open the live chat’s Add menu. Choose Start a Q&A.
- Enter a prompt that tells viewers what to ask about, then start the Q&A.
- Review the Questions list. When you are ready to answer a question, select it and choose Select question. YouTube pins the selected question at the top of chat so viewers can follow which one you are addressing.
- Close the question banner when you have finished with that question or want to move on.

Run the Q&A from the YouTube mobile app
The YouTube mobile app also supports starting and managing Live Q&A. Start your live stream, open Add in chat, start a Q&A, and enter a prompt. Open the Questions List to select and pin a question; use the chat controls to end the session. The app also has a separate Q&A sticker for asking viewers a question. That sticker is mobile-only and is distinct from the host-run Live Q&A questions list. See YouTube’s Android instructions.
Keep questions useful and chat manageable
Before starting the Q&A, briefly explain the topic, how viewers should submit questions, and whether you will prioritize a theme or take questions in order. If you are presenting at the same time, consider asking a trusted moderator to screen chat and flag questions for you.

Set moderation options
YouTube offers moderator roles, blocked words, slow mode, and other moderation settings. Configure what you can before the event; YouTube says some settings can also be adjusted while live. The available controls are described in YouTube’s live chat moderation help.
End the Q&A and understand what remains
End Live Q&A from the chat controls. YouTube says unanswered questions in the Q&A list are deleted when the session ends, while Q&A sessions remain available in chat replay. Chat replay is enabled by default on stream archives, and YouTube’s webcam guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
