Choose an encoder that can handle your video sources, set it to a YouTube-compatible profile, then connect it to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. For most standard YouTube streams, use RTMPS, match resolution and frame rate to your production and upload capacity, and rehearse with a private or unlisted test before the event.
What an encoder does—and which type to choose
An encoder takes video and audio from your sources, compresses them into a stream, and sends that feed to YouTube. It is useful for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio or video equipment, and multi-camera productions. You can encode with software running on a computer or with a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started, while recommending professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. It does not set a universal threshold for when hardware is necessary or publish a comparative benchmark.
Software encoder
Start with software when your sources are already available to the computer and it can encode your intended scene and output profile reliably. Check that the computer can manage the sources, scenes, and encoding workload at the same time. A camera or console with HDMI output may need an HDMI capture device if your computer has no suitable input; screen-only and webcam workflows do not automatically require one.
Standalone hardware encoder
Consider dedicated hardware when its inputs, routing, or dedicated operation better fit a higher-production workflow. Compare the number and type of source inputs, audio routing, supported protocols and codecs, target resolution and frame rate, HDR requirements, monitoring, and backup workflow. Do not assume a particular device will improve reliability or quality without checking it in your own setup.

Make the choice against your real workflow
- Sources: List every camera, computer, console, and audio source, and how each will reach the encoder.
- Encoding: Confirm support for the protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you plan to use.
- Network: Make sure the upload connection has room for the entire stream, not just the video track.
- Operation: Consider who will monitor the stream, how you will detect a failure, and what your backup plan is.
- Budget and portability: Buy dedicated equipment only when its workflow or production needs justify it.
YouTube’s guidance covers both software and hardware workflows but does not establish a model-by-model recommendation. Its encoder setup guide and streaming tips explain the supported path and production considerations.
Check channel eligibility before configuring the encoder
Your channel must be verified and not subject to live-streaming restrictions within the past 90 days. YouTube says activating live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of an event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate
Choose a profile your production can sustain and your connection can upload with headroom. A higher resolution is not automatically better: motion, frame rate, codec support, and network stability all matter. YouTube’s current encoder-settings page lists the following recommended ingestion bitrates, in Mbps, by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Match the row to your actual encoder output; these figures are platform recommendations for sending the stream to YouTube, not guarantees of the quality or playback options viewers will receive.

These are YouTube Help’s recommended RTMP/RTMPS ingestion values, accessed in 2026; its page also lists minimum bitrates. The codec columns are not interchangeable: choose the bitrate for the codec your encoder actually sends. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Leave upload headroom
Measure the upload capacity available during the conditions in which you will stream, including other people or devices sharing the connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom for the total stream bitrate. If you send both a primary and backup stream, count both. If the connection is variable or shared, choose a lower resolution or bitrate rather than running at the edge of capacity.
Set keyframes and audio
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Video rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR) for the supported RTMP/RTMPS profile.
- Audio codec: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio.
- 5.1 audio: For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube requires AAC and recommends 384 Kbps.
- Audio checks: Confirm the intended microphone or mixer input, listening level, and sync with picture before the event.
YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 fps. Confirm that both your encoder and chosen workflow support the codec and profile before selecting it.

Connect the encoder to YouTube with RTMPS
For a standard encoder setup, use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection in transit to Google’s servers. Encryption in transit does not remove every security risk, so keep your stream key private.
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- Choose the destination in your encoder: Select a YouTube preset if the encoder offers one. Otherwise choose RTMPS and enter the RTMPS server URL displayed in Live Control Room.
- Enter the stream key: Put the key from that Live Control Room stream into the encoder’s stream-key field. Do not include it in public screenshots or share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Set the output profile: Choose your resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval. YouTube automatically detects stream settings in Live Control Room by default; manual resolution selection is available through a custom key.
- Check audio routing: Select the correct input and verify audio is present, clear, and synchronized with the video.
- Start a test feed: Send a private or unlisted test, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health before using the setup for a public event.
YouTube describes a stream key as similar to the stream’s password and address. If a key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder. See Manage live stream settings and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

- Use a private or unlisted stream and run a representative segment with the same scene changes, motion, and audio levels expected during the event.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Check for missing video, stuttering, dropped frames, audio clipping, silence, or sync problems.
- Open the watch page as a viewer and confirm that playback works, audio is audible, and the selected latency feels suitable for the event.
- Rehearse the start and end sequence, including who starts the encoder and who confirms the stream in YouTube Studio.
- For a production where interruption matters, decide in advance who will monitor it and how you will respond if the encoder or connection fails.
Do not treat an encoder preview alone as proof that the audience-facing watch page is working. YouTube’s streaming tips and Live Control Room guidance cover testing and stream monitoring.
Choose latency for the kind of event
Latency is the delay between capture and playback. Lower latency can make audience interaction feel more immediate, but may increase playback buffering; for a one-way event, stability may matter more than near-real-time chat. Test the selected mode with the audience interaction you expect rather than assuming one setting suits every event. YouTube sets 4K/2160 streams to normal latency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When HLS or HDR changes the setup
HLS is an advanced alternative, not a drop-in RTMP replacement
YouTube supports HLS ingestion for cases such as HDR or codecs unavailable through RTMP. HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments and requires a different configuration: 1–4 second segments in TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. Most standard encoder setups should use RTMPS rather than treating HLS as a direct substitute. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

HDR requires a compatible source and encoder
YouTube’s HDR guidance says to use H.265/HEVC and leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. Its documented OBS HDR setup requires an HDR source and suitable hardware HEVC encoding. The Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so that preview cannot confirm how HDR color appears. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance for the detailed HDR requirements applicable to your setup.
Troubleshoot common encoder problems
The encoder cannot connect
- Confirm the encoder is set to RTMPS and supports it.
- Check that you copied the server URL and key for the correct stream from Live Control Room, without an accidental space or stale key.
- If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
The preview is missing or the stream is unstable
- Confirm that the encoder is sending and that the expected source is selected.
- Check stream health and compare your total output bitrate with available upload capacity. Reduce the profile if the connection cannot sustain it with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- For a shared or inconsistent connection, test at a lower resolution or frame rate rather than repeatedly increasing bitrate.
Video looks poor despite a high bitrate
- Verify the encoder’s actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate against the matching row in YouTube’s settings table.
- Check whether the source itself is low-resolution or difficult to encode; a high output setting cannot restore detail that is not in the source.
- Remember that the bitrate sent to YouTube is ingestion bitrate, not a promise about each viewer’s delivered quality.
Audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync
- Check the selected input, mute state, channel routing, and levels at the encoder.
- Use a supported audio codec and the applicable YouTube recommendation for stereo or 5.1 audio.
- Test the source and sync with representative content before the event, not only during a static opening screen.
The stream has a delay or viewers buffer
- Review the latency choice against the event: lower latency can increase buffering.
- If ingesting with HLS, account for its segment-based higher latency and confirm its configuration separately from RTMP/RTMPS.
- For 4K/2160, YouTube uses normal latency.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing continuously on a YouTube channel, an encoder on your own computer is not the only approach. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is not a camera-live encoder, and it streams to YouTube only.
