To use your own domain for a live stream, first decide whether it should be the viewer-facing page people open or the ingest address your encoder sends video to. Those are different functions and can require different hostnames, DNS records, and platform settings. Add the hostname in the streaming service first, enter only the DNS records it specifies, complete any ownership and HTTPS checks, and test the intended viewer or encoder path before sharing it.
First decide what the custom domain is for
A custom domain is a hostname under a domain you control, such as live.example.com. It does not by itself create a stream, webpage, player, or delivery service: the streaming platform must support the function you want.
- Viewer-facing page or playback hostname: viewers use a branded URL to open a hosted page or watch a player. The platform must support a hosted page, custom playback hostname, or custom OTT site.
- Ingest hostname: your encoder sends the stream to a custom endpoint instead of the provider’s default ingest address. The streaming platform must explicitly support custom ingest domains.
These are not interchangeable. A CNAME for a hosted page will not necessarily work as an encoder endpoint, and a custom ingest hostname does not automatically give viewers a branded watch page. You may use separate hostnames, such as watch.example.com and ingest.example.com, if the provider supports both.
What you need before changing DNS
- A domain you control and access to its DNS management panel.
- A streaming service that supports the precise custom-domain function you need.
- The exact hostname and DNS values supplied by that service, plus any verification or certificate instructions.
- A record of existing DNS settings. Do not delete records or redirect an apex domain (for example,
example.com) without checking what currently depends on it.
DNS dashboards differ. A record’s “Name” field may expect the full hostname or only its leading label, so follow your DNS provider’s field guidance rather than assuming all interfaces work alike. Vimeo OTT, for example, documents custom primary domains and subdomains; GoDaddy, Namecheap, and DNSimple are examples of registrars mentioned in its guidance, not required choices.

Set up the domain step by step
- Choose the hostname and purpose. Pick a clear subdomain such as
live.example.comfor a viewer page or a separate name for ingest. Confirm the platform supports that exact role before editing DNS. - Register the hostname with the streaming service. Use its dashboard or support workflow to add the custom domain. The service may provide a CNAME target, an ownership TXT record, certificate instructions, or more than one of these. For example, api.video documents custom domains for live streams and video delivery and lists DNS updates, domain provisioning, and TLS certificates among the requirements.
- Enter the provider’s DNS records exactly. Create only the records the streaming platform requests, with the name and target in the correct fields. Do not reuse a target found in another provider’s instructions.
- Complete ownership verification. If the service asks for a TXT record or dashboard verification, do that as a separate step from routing traffic. The platform must confirm control of the hostname before it can finish configuring the feature.
- Follow its proxy and TLS guidance. Some services require DNS-only routing; others may manage certificates or provide different instructions. Wait for the service’s own dashboard to report that the hostname is ready and secure before relying on it.
- Test the intended use. For a viewer URL, open the exact address over HTTPS and confirm the intended page and player appear. For ingest, use the secure ingest URL and protocol the platform supplies, and change the encoder’s server or URL only after the provider reports the custom endpoint configured.
Provider examples: why DNS values are not universal
The following records are examples for named services, not generic instructions. Provider documentation can change; Cloudflare’s custom-ingest page showed an update date of April 21, 2026, and OneStream Live’s help article showed an update date of March 5, 2025.
| Service and function | Documented DNS or setup detail | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Stream custom ingest | CNAME to live.cloudflare.com. If Cloudflare provides DNS, the record is added automatically. |
For a Cloudflare-managed ingest hostname, the instructions say to use DNS-only (grey-clouded), not proxied. This is for ingest, not a viewer landing page. Cloudflare’s custom ingest instructions. |
| OneStream Live hosted page | CNAME to hostedpage.onestream.live, followed by subdomain verification in OneStream. |
The help article says to disable proxying where the DNS provider offers a proxy option. Its name field may take the full subdomain or only its leading label, depending on the registrar. OneStream’s verification instructions. |
Cloudflare’s documentation describes secure RTMPS and SRT for live-stream ingestion and treats custom ingest support as a provider feature, not something created by pointing any arbitrary CNAME at a server. See Cloudflare’s explanation of custom ingest domains.

Ownership checks, HTTPS, and waiting for readiness
DNS routing and ownership verification are separate jobs. A provider can ask you to prove control with a TXT record or another check, then provision a TLS certificate so the hostname works securely over HTTPS. Firebase Hosting documents these as distinct steps in its custom-domain workflow; use that as background on the concepts, not as a replacement for your streaming service’s process.
Some delivery arrangements place a CDN or cloud distribution between the domain and the video service. AWS’s tutorial for an S3 and CloudFront setup describes requesting a certificate, adding the hostname as an alternate CloudFront domain, and routing DNS to the distribution. Those steps apply to that AWS-managed arrangement, not automatically to hosted streaming services: AWS video-hosting tutorial.

Wait for the provider’s confirmation before sharing the address or switching an encoder. The timing varies: OneStream says its verification can take seconds to a few hours, while Firebase says some DNS or TLS steps can take up to 24 hours. Those are service-specific estimates, not a universal propagation or certificate deadline. If the platform still shows pending, recheck the record name, value, proxy setting, and verification record against its instructions.
Common problems and fixes
- The hostname does not resolve or reaches the wrong destination: compare the DNS record’s host/name and target with the streaming provider’s values. Check whether your DNS panel expects the full hostname or just the subdomain label.
- The provider cannot verify ownership: confirm the requested TXT record or verification step is present exactly as specified, then allow for the provider’s stated processing time. Do not substitute a record from a different service.
- The service reports a proxy conflict: check whether it requires DNS-only routing and disable the proxy for that hostname if its instructions say to do so. Cloudflare Stream’s custom-ingest guidance specifically calls for DNS-only on a Cloudflare-managed ingest hostname.
- The page loads without a secure connection or the certificate is pending: wait for the service to provision TLS and check its status. Do not assume that a CNAME alone provisions a certificate.
- The viewer URL opens but the stream is absent: check the hosted page or playback configuration and the actual stream status separately; a correctly routed hostname does not itself start a broadcast.
- The encoder cannot connect to the custom ingest host: verify that the streaming platform supports custom ingest, that it has marked the hostname ready, and that the encoder uses the precise secure URL and protocol supplied by the platform. A viewer-facing CNAME is not an ingest endpoint.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos live around the clock, a custom domain is a separate question from keeping the stream running. StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists in the cloud to YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. You do not need to leave a computer, OBS, or your home connection running. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
