Linear TV is programming delivered as a continuous, scheduled channel: viewers tune in and watch whatever is airing at that moment. A 24/7 YouTube channel uses YouTube Live to create a similar channel-like experience, but it remains a creator-operated livestream—not automatically a conventional broadcast or cable channel. The creator supplies the programming and keeps a source feed running; YouTube delivers the live player and audience features.
What “linear TV” means
In a linear format, the channel determines what plays next according to a schedule or sequence. Viewers can join at different points and see the same current program as other viewers. That differs from an on-demand catalog, where each viewer chooses a title and when to start it.
A continuous YouTube channel borrows the linear experience by keeping a YouTube Live broadcast available around the clock. The content might be live camera footage, graphics, arranged video programming, or a feed that plays prerecorded videos. A prerecorded feed can be presented as a livestream, but that does not make the underlying footage newly live.
How a 24/7 YouTube channel works
- Prepare the programming and source feed. Choose what viewers will see and how the feed will be produced. A continuous operation needs its chosen source and transmission workflow to remain available; the precise setup depends on the creator and is not prescribed as one universal architecture by YouTube.
- Choose a supported way to go live. YouTube documents streaming by mobile, webcam, encoder, and console. An encoder can be useful for overlays or hardware inputs such as microphones and cameras, but it is one option, not a universal requirement. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Send the broadcast to YouTube Live. YouTube provides the live player and real-time audience interaction features, including chat. The creator remains responsible for the content and for keeping the source and transmission running.
YouTube’s general setup guidance does not specify how to automate a continuous playlist, license looped material, guarantee uptime, or design failover. Those choices depend on the rights to the content and the production setup.

What a 24/7 YouTube channel is—and is not
- It is a continuous live-delivery format. Viewers can arrive at any time and join the current point in the feed.
- It may play prerecorded material. A live broadcast can carry a feed of arranged or repeated videos; “live” describes the delivery session, not necessarily when every video was recorded.
- It is not the same as YouTube TV. YouTube TV is a separate service. This article concerns creators broadcasting through YouTube Live, not YouTube TV’s programming, pricing, or availability.
- It is not automatically cable or conventional broadcast television. The channel-like viewing pattern does not turn a creator’s YouTube stream into a traditional TV channel.
YouTube requirements and content rules
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. It also lists a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. These are platform rules that can change, so check the current YouTube Help page before configuring a broadcast.
Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. For a channel built around repeated or prerecorded programming, make sure you have the necessary rights to every video, music track, image, and other material in the feed. The sources cited here do not establish a blanket license for looping content or a guarantee that a particular playlist will be permitted.

Monetization and watch hours are separate questions
YouTube documents ads and fan-funding options for eligible live streams, but says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Eligibility and actual ad delivery are not the same thing.
For YouTube Partner Program qualifying watch hours, YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie’s August 12, 2026 explainer says public long-form videos—including podcasts—and archived livestreams can count; livestreams that are not archived do not count. Why creators use the format
A continuous channel gives viewers a shared, ongoing feed instead of asking each person to select a video and start time. YouTube reported that more than 30% of daily logged-in viewers watched live content on average in Q2 2025; that is a dated platform-wide figure, not a forecast for any individual channel. YouTube also reported historical TV-screen and streaming figures in 2020, but those figures describe their stated dates and populations—not current audience measurements.
