How to Live Stream on YouTube from Your Phone

Go live from the YouTube app with Create → Live. Check eligibility first, then review visibility, audience, and format before you start.

To go live from your phone, open the YouTube app, tap Create → Live, set up your stream, then tap Go live. First check that your channel meets YouTube’s mobile-live requirements: at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.

Check whether your channel and phone are eligible

YouTube’s mobile-live help page lists the channel requirements below. Its help pages do not show publication dates, so check YouTube’s current guidance if you are relying on a particular threshold or your account’s access is unclear.

  • At least 50 subscribers. If your channel has more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the number of viewers for a mobile livestream.
  • Verified channel.
  • No live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • Live streaming enabled. YouTube says first activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • Supported device minimum: Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later.
  • Age: YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says creators must be at least 16.

Mobile access is lost if a channel falls below 50 subscribers. YouTube says that after a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removing the mobile audience limitation can still take several weeks; do not assume the limit disappears immediately.

Start a livestream in the YouTube app

  1. Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet and sign in to the channel you intend to use.
  2. Tap Create, then Live.
  3. Tap Edit to enter the stream details and review the available settings. Check the title and visibility, audience setting, live chat, age restriction, monetization, and any other options shown for your account.
  4. Choose whether to start now or schedule the stream for later.
  5. When you are ready, tap Go live.
  6. To stop broadcasting, tap Finish. YouTube creates an archive, which you can later change to a different privacy setting or delete.

For a scheduled stream, return to Create → Live, tap the calendar, select the scheduled stream, and tap Go live. YouTube says a private practice mode is rolling out to creators; look for it in the app, but do not count on it being available to every account.

Choose vertical or horizontal before you begin

The orientation affects where viewers may discover the stream and which features are available. Pick the format that fits the content and audience rather than assuming one is best for every channel.

Format Potential fit Documented differences
Vertical Phone-first vlogs or quick updates; vertical livestreams can be discovered in the Shorts feed. YouTube’s comparison lists memberships for vertical streams, but not clickable links in chat or the channel description, or live ad pre-rolls and midrolls.
Horizontal Streams where horizontal viewing or links are important. YouTube lists clickable links in chat and the channel description, live ad pre-rolls and midrolls, and memberships.

YouTube’s dual-format streaming guidance is configured through Live Control Room or Studio; the direct mobile-app steps above should not be taken to mean that one phone-app broadcast automatically creates both formats. In the documented Live Control Room workflow, vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. See YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips for its format comparison and guidance.

Review privacy and audience settings

Do not rely on the default visibility setting. YouTube says the default mobile privacy setting is unlisted for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or older; creators can change it. Its general live-streaming guidance sets a minimum creator age of 16, so users should follow the applicable account and platform rules and inspect the actual controls shown before broadcasting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is a separate archive caveat for smaller channels: if you have more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube says the archived mobile stream is private by default. Review the finished archive’s privacy setting if you want viewers to find it afterward.

What you need for a phone livestream

The phone is the essential device for this direct workflow. YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do,” and recommends trying a test livestream to get comfortable with the process.

Neither accessory is an eligibility requirement. If data use or battery life matters for your situation, check your carrier and device details before a long stream.

Fix common mobile livestream problems

The Live option is missing

Check that the channel has at least 50 subscribers, is verified, has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days, and has live streaming enabled. If you just enabled it for the first time, activation may still be processing for up to 24 hours.

The stream has fewer viewers than expected

If the channel has more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may be applying a mobile audience limit. Reaching 1,000 does not guarantee an immediate change; YouTube says removing the limitation can take several weeks.

The replay is private or not visible to the audience

Check the archive’s privacy setting after the stream. YouTube says mobile archives for channels in the more-than-50-but-fewer-than-1,000 subscriber band are private by default, and mobile privacy defaults also vary by user age.

You want both vertical and horizontal viewers

Do not assume the app’s basic mobile workflow enables dual-format output. YouTube describes dual-format setup through Live Control Room or Studio, and its documented workflow does not allow adding vertical format after a stream is underway.
