If your Raspberry Pi YouTube stream shows offline, first find out where the signal stops: on the Pi, between the encoder and YouTube, or after YouTube receives it. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the encoder’s stream URL and key, then inspect the local feed and outbound connection. These checks usually identify the failed stage before you change hardware or rebuild the setup.
Find the point where the stream stops
Open the correct event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room while the Raspberry Pi encoder is running. The preview is the quickest dividing line: if YouTube receives a preview, the Pi has sent video to YouTube and the problem is more likely with the event’s live state or viewer playback. If there is no preview, focus on the encoder, its destination settings, and the network between the Pi and YouTube.
- No encoder output or a local feed problem: investigate camera capture, the capture process, encoder errors, and Pi load.
- Local feed works, but the Live Control Room has no preview: check the stream key, ingest URL and protocol, and outbound connectivity.
- Live Control Room preview works, but the channel or watch page appears offline: verify that the correct event is live and accessible, then investigate YouTube’s stream and viewer-side status.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the encoder’s picture and sound, errors, and CPU load. Keep the exact error message handy; it can distinguish a startup problem from an ingest or connection failure.
Check the stream key and event settings
- In YouTube Studio, open the intended scheduled stream in the Live Control Room and find its stream settings.
- Compare the displayed stream URL and stream key with the server and key entered in the Raspberry Pi encoder. Make sure the encoder is configured for this event, not an old or different one.
- If the key was reset, replace the saved key in the encoder and restart the stream. YouTube explains how to reset keys in its live-stream settings guidance; its encoder setup guide covers matching the URL and key and checking the preview.
Treat the key as a password. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Don’t include one in a screenshot, public post, or unredacted log. If you think it has been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.

Verify that the Raspberry Pi is capturing and encoding
Before changing YouTube settings, establish that the Pi has a working source and is producing output. Check the camera or capture device locally, confirm the capture and encoder processes are running, and inspect their status or error output. Watch CPU load while encoding; an encoder error or an overloaded Pi can prevent a usable feed from reaching YouTube.
For camera-based Raspberry Pi setups, the Raspberry Pi documentation describes rpicam-vid for video capture and its libav backend for audio/video encoding and network streaming. The appropriate configuration depends on the Pi model, camera, software installation, audio source, and streaming protocol. Use the documentation for your actual setup rather than copying a command meant for a different one: Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation.

Pi 5 and low-latency encoding
Raspberry Pi documents that Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Its --low-latency option may reduce encoding latency, but can reduce coding efficiency and potentially maximum frame rate; the documentation says it should still achieve 1080p30 in that context. This is relevant when diagnosing latency or encoding performance, not evidence that Pi 5 itself causes an offline stream.
Match the ingest URL and protocol
Use the exact server URL shown in the current Live Control Room settings. Don’t rely on a remembered or hard-coded destination if the event’s displayed URL differs. YouTube supports and recommends RTMPS; when the encoder is set to use RTMPS, confirm that it supports the protocol and that the destination uses the correct rtmps URL.

- Standard: The black GaN 27W USB-C PD Power Supply (with 1.3M Length) for Pi 5 Output: 5.1V/5A Input: AC100-240V; It allows the the Pi 5 to power a wider range of peripherals.
- High Quality Power Solution: This GaN power supply can supply for Raspberry Pi 5 current up to 5.1V/5A to Pi 5 motherboard. In addition, there is no problem that low voltage appears even in full-load power operation.
- 6-layer Protection Function: Includes various functions such as over-power protection, over-current protection, short-circuit protection, over-voltage protection, low-voltage protection, and electrostatic protection.
- Good Compatibility: The GaN 27W PD USB-C Power Supply is also capable of delivering [email protected] ,3A @ 9V, 2.25A @ 12V, and 1.8A @ 15V to PD-compatible products, making it a good cost-effective power supply for many general-purpose.Compatible with Raspberry Pi 5 16GB/8GB/4GB/2GB
- For Pi 5:The total power drawn from the four USB ports on Pi 5 is limited by default to a nominal 600mA; this limit is automatically increased to a nominal 1.6A when the USB-C PD Power Supply is detected.
If the encoder reports an SSL error or connection timeout, recheck the protocol and server first. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance also suggests specifying port 443 for an SSL error when appropriate. The current URL in Live Control Room takes precedence over a generic example.
Check upload capacity and connection stability
Measure outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. The stream’s bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth, with capacity left over for fluctuations and any backup bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond the primary plus backup bitrate. That is a recommendation, not a guaranteed failure threshold. YouTube also warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; see its streaming tips.

If Wi-Fi reliability is suspect, try a wired Ethernet connection as a diagnostic and see whether the preview becomes stable. This is a practical test, not a specific YouTube requirement. Avoid using all available upload capacity for the stream, and check for interruptions during the period when the stream drops offline.

- Start the encoder and check that the Live Control Room receives its preview.
- For a scheduled encoder stream, wait for the preview before selecting Go Live, following YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Check the channel or watch page for the intended event. If the preview is present but viewers still see an error, verify that the correct event is live and accessible, then review encoder health and YouTube’s stream-quality guidance.
A missing preview points upstream of viewer playback. A visible preview means the encoder feed has reached YouTube, so changing camera hardware is unlikely to be the first useful step.

Match the fix to the symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Encoder will not start, or reports a key-related error | Confirm the event, stream key, and server URL in Live Control Room; update the encoder if the key was reset. |
| Camera or local feed is missing | Check capture-device output, the capture process, encoder errors, and CPU load on the Pi. |
| Local feed works, but YouTube preview is absent | Compare the ingest URL and protocol with current event settings, then test upload capacity and connection reliability. |
| SSL error or connection timeout | Check the RTMPS URL, protocol, port where appropriate, and encoder support for RTMPS. |
| Preview is present, but viewers see the stream as offline | Confirm the event’s live status and watch-page accessibility; then inspect stream quality and encoder health. |
Change one thing at a time and check whether the preview returns. That keeps a key, URL, encoder, or network problem from being obscured by unrelated changes.
