Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a straightforward YouTube broadcast produced on one computer, start with OBS. It is a local encoder workflow: configure it with the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, then send the stream. AWS Elemental MediaLive is a cloud video-processing service for workflows that need configured cloud inputs and outputs or cloud-side processing. It is not simply a cloud-hosted version of OBS, and its costs depend on the resources and configuration you run.
There is no verified India-specific benchmark here for latency, reliability, or total cost between the two. Choose by workflow first, then verify the AWS Region, current rates, network path, and configuration for your actual production.
OBS or AWS Elemental MediaLive: which should you choose?
| Question | OBS | AWS Elemental MediaLive |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the encoding or processing happen? | In the creator’s local software and hardware workflow. | In AWS as a cloud video-processing service. |
| Best fit | A production built around one computer, with scenes and sources managed locally and an encoded stream sent to YouTube. | A workflow that needs cloud-side video processing, configured live inputs and outputs, or managed channel operations. |
| How YouTube receives the stream | Enter YouTube Live Control Room’s stream URL and key in the encoder, then start sending. | Configure a MediaLive output compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest protocol and settings; verify the current AWS and YouTube requirements. |
| Cost basis | Hardware and electricity costs depend on the local setup; no general total cost is established here. | Charges depend on resource state, attached inputs, configured outputs, video characteristics, and any feature add-ons. Exact India-region rates depend on the selected Region and configuration. |
| Inputs and formats | Depends on local sources and encoders. Match the output to YouTube’s current ingest guidance. | MediaLive supports multiple input types, but supported codecs vary by input type. |
| Redundancy | No particular redundant OBS architecture or comparative reliability result is established here. | AWS documents a standard dual-pipeline channel class. AWS says to plan upstream bandwidth at twice the expected maximum source bitrate for that configuration; this is not a guarantee against failure. |
Choose OBS for a computer-based production
If your sources, scenes, and operation are already on one computer, OBS is generally the simpler starting point: YouTube’s documented encoder workflow is to enter its stream URL and key in the encoder and begin streaming. This is a workflow-based recommendation, not a measured setup-time or performance comparison. Check that your computer and connection can sustain the production you intend to send.
Evaluate MediaLive when cloud processing is part of the requirement
MediaLive is relevant when the production needs configured cloud inputs and outputs or cloud-side video processing. Its configuration and billing model require you to account for the channel state, inputs, outputs, formats, and features involved. Do not assume that using a cloud service automatically makes a workflow more reliable or less expensive.

Do not decide on an unverified India performance claim
The available official documentation does not establish an India-based OBS-versus-MediaLive latency or reliability benchmark, nor an exact regional cost comparison. For an India deployment, check the intended AWS Region and current rates, the network route and ingest endpoint, and the actual production requirements. Treat performance as something to validate for your own path rather than a blanket claim about either product.
What YouTube requires from an encoder
Get the stream URL and key from Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Enter those values in your chosen encoder or configure the compatible MediaLive output with the selected ingest protocol and settings.
- Start sending the stream from the encoder or configured workflow, then check the live preview and status in YouTube.
Your stream key is a credential. Keep it private and do not publish it or include it in screenshots, shared documents, or public configuration files. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is at YouTube Help: encoder setup.
Use current ingest settings for the chosen resolution
YouTube’s encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its current recommendations include 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. These are YouTube’s published settings guidance, not a promise that a particular connection—Indian or otherwise—can sustain the selected stream. Consult the current table for your exact resolution, frame rate, and codec at YouTube Help: live encoder settings.

Prefer RTMPS when the selected workflow supports it
YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. In Live Control Room, copy the RTMPS URL if you intend to use the secure protocol; do not assume a displayed RTMP URL is already RTMPS. The protocol details are in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

For the HDR workflow described in YouTube’s India-localized help page, OBS must be version 30.1 or later and the setup calls for a supported hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. YouTube says HDR can use HLS or RTMP(S); HLS has its own stream-key configuration and segment requirements. Confirm your hardware and the current instructions before configuring HDR: YouTube Help: HDR live streaming. Do not apply ordinary SDR settings unchanged to an HDR stream.
What MediaLive’s configuration means for cost and operation
Price the channel state, inputs, and outputs—not just the stream hours
AWS distinguishes idle and running MediaLive channels. For idle channels, AWS describes an idle channel charge covering inputs and outputs; idle unattached or stopped push inputs can also incur charges, while idle pull inputs have no charge. For running channels, AWS says there is no channel charge as such, but charges apply to each attached input and each configured output. Output charges can apply even when an output is paused, and input charges can apply to attached inputs even when they are not active or receiving content. Feature add-ons may add charges.

AWS says there are no contracts or minimum commitments for MediaLive, but that does not mean usage is free. Check the current AWS pricing page for the Region and exact setup before estimating: AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing.
Match input type and codec
MediaLive documents live inputs including CDI, HLS, Link, MediaConnect, RTMP pull and push, RTP, SDI, SMPTE 2110, and SRT caller/listener. Codec support depends on the input: for example, the documented RTMP input support includes H.264 video and AAC audio, while other input types have different combinations. Confirm the codec against the specific configured input rather than assuming a codec supported somewhere in MediaLive is accepted by every input. See AWS MediaLive supported codecs by input type and AWS MediaLive input types.
Set input specifications accurately
AWS says input pricing and resource allocation are influenced by input specifications. Selecting a higher resolution or codec specification than the source needs can raise charges; understating processing needs can leave insufficient resources and degrade output. Output charges also depend on characteristics such as codec and frame rate. Estimate from the real source, outputs, Region, channel class, operating hours, and features using AWS’s current pricing information and AWS input specification guidance.

Plan bandwidth if you need standard dual-pipeline operation
AWS describes the standard channel class as dual-pipeline and recommends upstream bandwidth equal to twice the anticipated maximum source bitrate for that setup. Include this requirement in network planning; it is a bandwidth implication of the two pipelines, not evidence of zero downtime. See AWS MediaLive source assessment.
Can you stream to YouTube with MediaLive?
Yes, provided you configure a MediaLive output that matches YouTube’s selected ingest protocol and settings. This is a configuration task rather than an assumed one-click integration: check the current MediaLive output and YouTube ingest documentation for the specific protocol, video, and audio choices you plan to use. YouTube’s supported encoder settings are listed at YouTube Help; AWS’s service and pricing details are at AWS Elemental MediaLive.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
YouTube does not receive a signal
- Confirm you copied the current stream URL and key from the correct Live Control Room broadcast.
- Check that the configured protocol matches the URL: use the RTMPS URL when selecting RTMPS, rather than assuming the RTMP address is secure or interchangeable.
- For MediaLive, verify that the output protocol and settings match the YouTube ingest configuration; do not assume a one-click integration.
The stream is unstable or drops frames
- Compare the outgoing bitrate with the available upstream connection and YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen resolution, codec, and frame rate.
- Check that encoding is configured for CBR and that keyframes are set to two seconds, without exceeding YouTube’s four-second maximum recommendation.
- For MediaLive standard dual-pipeline operation, confirm the source bandwidth plan accounts for twice the expected maximum source bitrate.
MediaLive’s bill is higher than expected
- Check whether the channel is idle or running, which inputs remain attached, and which outputs are configured or paused.
- Review idle push inputs, input specifications, output codec and frame rate, and any feature add-ons.
- Recalculate against the actual AWS Region and operating hours using the current pricing page.
The input is rejected or the output is degraded
- Verify codec support for the exact MediaLive input type, not just for MediaLive in general.
- Check input resolution and codec specifications: overspecifying can raise costs, while underspecifying processing needs can degrade output.
- For HDR, confirm OBS version, hardware HEVC support, Main 10, P010, and the selected Rec. 2100 color space; HDR has protocol-specific setup requirements.
Bottom line for creators in India
Use OBS when you are producing locally on one computer and need a direct encoder-to-YouTube workflow. Consider MediaLive when cloud-side processing and configured inputs and outputs justify its setup and resource-based billing. Neither choice has a substantiated India-wide latency, reliability, or price advantage here; validate the exact path and configuration before committing.
