A 24/7 YouTube lofi stream needs three things: a playlist of music and visuals you have the rights to use, a playout tool that plays and loops them, and an encoder that sends the finished program to YouTube Live. “Playlist bot” is a loose term: it might mean an OBS extension, a media-playout pipeline, or a hosted service. The playlist handles what plays; the encoder handles delivery.
What a playlist bot does—and what it does not do
In a typical setup, playout software selects tracks and visuals in order or at random, then keeps the program moving through the playlist. An encoder packages that output and sends it to YouTube Live. YouTube’s documentation describes the relationship between a broadcast and its incoming stream in its Live Streaming API overview.
A bot does not make music or artwork safe to use, guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting, or ensure YouTube saves a replay. Those are separate rights, reliability, and archiving concerns.
Before you start: prepare the channel and clear the content
Check live-stream access in YouTube Studio
Enable live streaming and complete the verification flow YouTube currently presents for your account. Confirm in YouTube Studio that the channel is ready and that you can create a live stream before configuring automation. The exact account flow can change, so use Studio rather than relying on an old activation-time claim.

Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Get permission for every track and visual
Use music and visuals you own or have permission to broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even when you have a license, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for the stream to proceed without a match-related interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Keep license terms and track and artist metadata with your playlist as a practical record. A license’s legal effect depends on its terms and circumstances; a track being available online or labelled “lofi” does not establish permission to stream it.
Choose where playlist automation will run
The key decision is whether to keep an encoder running on equipment you manage or use hosted playout. Neither approach removes the need to monitor the broadcast, check content rights, or test recovery.

| Consideration | Local encoder and playlist automation | Hosted cloud playout |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Your computer or a machine/VPS you manage. | The provider’s cloud infrastructure, as described by the provider. |
| Control | Direct access to local media, encoder settings, and automation. | Depends on the provider’s dashboard and supported media and workflow. |
| What must stay available | The local computer, power, and network must remain available. A managed VPS shifts some infrastructure operations but still needs configuration. | A provider may let you run the playlist without keeping your personal computer online; confirm the workflow and terms with the provider. |
| Cost | Hardware and electricity, or VPS charges. No verified cost comparison is established here. | Provider subscription or usage terms. Check current pricing and terms directly. |
| Recovery | Process supervision and restarts can help, but test failure modes yourself. One operator’s FFmpeg notes describe both restart handling and freeze issues; this is an example, not a reliability benchmark: community FFmpeg setup notes. | Recovery depends on the provider’s implementation. Vendor claims are not independent reliability testing. |
For a local setup, a desktop or mini PC can serve as the always-on machine, but the cited YouTube guidance does not establish minimum computer specifications for this particular playlist workload. A VPS is another option if you can configure and operate it. Choose based on the control you need, the infrastructure you can maintain, and how you will notice and respond to failures.

Build the playlist and playout workflow
- Organize cleared media. Put only approved tracks and visuals into the playlist source. Keep the associated permission records and metadata accessible.
- Choose the playback behavior. Decide whether tracks play in a fixed order or shuffle, how the visual behaves, and what should happen at the end of the list. Configure looping, startup, and resume behavior if the tool supports them.
- Configure the automation tool. An OBS extension is one possible playlist-bot approach. The public 24/7 Playout project advertises looping, shuffle, autostart, and resume for OBS, but those listed features do not prove compatibility with every YouTube workflow. Review the project’s current documentation and test before relying on it: 24/7 Playout Plugin for OBS.
- Run a short trial. Confirm that media advances correctly, that audio does not clip or go silent between tracks, and that visuals behave as expected. Use a private or unlisted test stream before a public launch.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
Use the standard RTMPS workflow
YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard live delivery. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream, then use the stream configuration YouTube provides for your encoder. Enter the server and stream key in the encoder’s corresponding fields; do not paste the key into public scripts, screenshots, or repositories. If it is exposed, replace it in Studio.
Set video and audio parameters for the output
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table to select a video bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream. YouTube’s guidance calls for constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its advanced encoder settings recommend 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Settings and recommendations can change, so check the current page before launch: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Match the encoder’s output to the actual program. Test representative movement and sound—not just a still frame or silence—and check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the test. YouTube transcodes live video into multiple output formats, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured feed.
Use HLS only when your workflow calls for it
HLS is a separate YouTube ingest option, not another name for RTMPS. It may suit particular codec or HDR requirements, but YouTube notes its latency is higher than RTMP. Its stated HLS requirements include segments of 1–4 seconds, MPEG-TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. Check YouTube’s HLS setup requirements and your encoder’s current instructions before choosing it. Most basic playlist-bot setups can start with the standard RTMPS workflow.
Launch, monitor, and plan for interruptions
- Start with a controlled test. Check the stream in YouTube Studio and verify the picture, audio, and playlist transitions before making it public.
- Watch stream health. Review YouTube’s health indicators and messages, and watch for encoder or network warnings. Also check that transitions do not leave dead air, broken visuals, or an unexpectedly stopped playlist.
- Test recovery. Confirm what happens if the encoder stops, the network drops, or a media file fails. A process that restarts after an error is useful only if it recovers correctly in the actual setup.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password; replace it in Studio if it is exposed.
- Decide how to preserve a replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the replay matters, end and restart the broadcast before it passes that threshold and/or make a local recording backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
A continuous live broadcast and a saved replay are different outcomes. A long-running stream can remain live without YouTube capturing a complete archive, so plan recording and restart boundaries separately.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube rejects the encoder connection: Check that you selected the intended broadcast, copied its current server and key correctly, and are using the ingest method configured in the encoder. If the key may have been exposed or replaced, update the encoder with the current key from Studio.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the encoder’s bitrate and output settings against YouTube’s current resolution/frame-rate guidance, then verify that available upload bandwidth can sustain the chosen output. Review encoder and network warnings rather than repeatedly restarting without identifying the issue.
- The playlist stops or repeats the wrong item: Check the playlist source, file availability, loop or shuffle settings, and the tool’s startup and resume behavior. Test the transition that failed in a short private or unlisted stream.
- Audio is silent, clipped, or uneven: Check the encoder’s audio input and stereo settings, inspect levels across several representative tracks, and listen for gaps at transitions. Confirm the output bitrate against YouTube’s current recommendation.
- The live stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Stop using the matched material unless you have the necessary rights and have resolved any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner. A license alone does not guarantee that automated matching will not interrupt the stream.
- The stream runs but no full replay appears: Check whether the broadcast exceeded 12 hours. For future archives, plan shorter sessions and/or record locally.
- A local setup goes offline: Check power, the machine’s sleep or restart behavior, network availability, and whether the encoder or playout process stopped. Configure and test supervision or restart behavior, but do not assume it handles every freeze or failure.
