If your PC is getting hot while a YouTube music stream runs around the clock, first find out whether it is playing someone else’s stream or encoding and broadcasting your own. Check the workload, reduce unnecessary apps, and inspect airflow before changing hardware. If the computer repeatedly throttles, shuts down, or has a fan that does not run, treat that as a cooling fault—not a problem to solve by tweaking stream settings.

First identify what the PC is doing

Playing a YouTube stream in a browser and producing a live broadcast are different workloads. Browser playback can use CPU and other system resources, especially alongside many tabs or apps; an encoder used to send your own live stream adds another workload. Microsoft explains that components consume power to operate and that power produces heat (Microsoft’s thermal-management overview).

  • If you are only watching: check whether the browser or another app is consuming substantial CPU. You do not need encoder settings to watch a stream.
  • If you are broadcasting: check the encoder’s CPU use and the stream’s health in YouTube Live Control Room. Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are encoder settings to test, not cooling fixes by themselves.

Check for signs of a real overheating problem

A warm case or audible fan alone does not establish a fault. More concerning signs include sustained high workload, thermal throttling, unexpected shutdowns, noticeable system slowness, or persistently excessive fan noise. Intel lists these as possible overheating symptoms but does not set one universal safe temperature in its troubleshooting guidance. Follow the temperature and service guidance for your exact PC model.

Reduce unnecessary software load

  1. Open Task Manager: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and select the Processes view. Check the CPU column to identify busy apps.
  2. Close what you do not need: exit unused browser tabs, applications, and background tasks. Do not end processes you do not recognize or that Windows needs.
  3. Compare again: leave only the required playback or streaming software running and check CPU usage after it settles. Microsoft recommends monitoring resource use to identify heavy processes.
  4. For an encoder: test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the computer is under sustained load, then check YouTube’s stream health and the live dashboard. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring encoder streams; use its current encoder guidance for settings appropriate to your stream (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube live-streaming tips; YouTube stream health metrics).

On Windows 10 or 11, do not switch to Best performance as a cooling measure: Microsoft notes that this mode increases power use and may make laptops run warmer. Microsoft’s current performance guidance applies to Windows 10 and 11; Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025 (Microsoft performance guidance).

CORSAIR RS120 ARGB 120mm PWM Fans – Daisy-Chain Connection – Low-Noise – Magnetic Dome Bearing – Triple Pack – Black
  • Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
  • Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
  • Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
  • CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
  • High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.

Improve airflow without guessing at repairs

  • Put the computer on a hard, stable, ventilated surface. Keep air intakes and exhaust vents clear; do not run a laptop on bedding or soft fabric that can obstruct them.
  • Look for accessible dust around vents and fans. Clean only as the device maker instructs; do not force open a laptop or use a cleaning method the manufacturer does not approve.
  • Check that accessible fans spin and that cables or nearby objects are not blocking airflow. Intel’s troubleshooting guidance for DIY systems says to verify adequate internal airflow and check fan operation and dust.

Intel’s overheating guidance is specifically for DIY PCs with Intel boxed processors. For that kind of desktop, check that the thermal solution matches the processor’s socket and thermal requirements and is mounted correctly. For a manufacturer-built desktop or any laptop, use the maker’s model-specific service instructions or contact its support; laptop thresholds and repair procedures vary by model. Intel recommends OEM support for overheating on manufacturer-built systems (Intel overheating symptoms and troubleshooting; Intel fan guidance).

Know when to stop troubleshooting and get service

If the PC keeps shutting down, throttling, or running with a fan that does not work after basic software and airflow checks, stop treating the issue as a YouTube setting problem. Seek service using the computer maker’s support channel or service guide. Do not repaste a CPU, replace a fan, or buy a cooler without identifying the fault and confirming compatibility. A cooling pad or aftermarket cooler is not a universal answer; the right part depends on the device, model, and diagnosed issue.

Keep a continuous broadcast running without the PC

If you are creating a 24/7 YouTube music broadcast and the local computer’s workload or cooling is the obstacle, a cloud stream moves the playback and streaming work off that machine. YouTube’s encoder directory lists services including Gyre for continuous streams and describes Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live streaming without a dedicated PC; availability, terms, and costs should be checked with each service (YouTube encoder directory).

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube live stream, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
