You can use YouTube Shorts in two different ways to promote an always-on stream: viewers may discover a vertical live stream while browsing Shorts, and you can publish short teasers or highlights that give them a reason to watch. Neither route guarantees placement or traffic, and an ordinary Short does not automatically link directly to your ongoing stream.
How do I use YouTube Shorts to promote my live stream?
First decide whether you want people to discover the live broadcast itself or see a separate promotional video. YouTube supports both a vertical-live discovery surface in the Shorts experience and Shorts content such as teasers or eligible live highlights. They have different setup requirements and viewer actions.

Can people find my live stream while scrolling Shorts?
Yes, if the broadcast has a vertical viewing version. YouTube says viewers, including people who are not existing subscribers, can find vertical live streams while browsing YouTube Shorts. Set up a vertical version before going live
YouTube Live Control Room supports concurrent horizontal and vertical streams. When dual streaming, people browsing Shorts on mobile see the vertical version, and both versions use the same live chat. You cannot add the vertical version after the stream has begun, so plan and check it before starting.

- Review the vertical preview and choose a layout that keeps the important content visible, such as center crop, fit to phone width, or a stacked layout where available.
- Check the portrait framing for faces, captions, titles, and documentary details. Move essential text or action away from the edges that may be cropped.
- Start the stream only after confirming the vertical version is present; it cannot be added once the broadcast is underway.
The vertical live feed is app-based and is not currently available on tablets. Viewers in the vertical live experience also cannot click links in chat or the channel description. Make any next step understandable in the video itself: say or show the channel name and what viewers should look for, rather than relying on a clickable link.
Make promotional Shorts that give viewers a reason to watch
A Short works best as a clear invitation to a particular experience, not merely an announcement that the channel is live. For a documentary channel, that could be a striking sequence, a revealing detail, a recurring topic, a useful process, or a scheduled guest. Tell viewers plainly that the channel has an ongoing live stream and identify when a featured segment or event is happening. This is practical editorial guidance, not a claim about YouTube ranking.

For an event or notable scheduled moment
YouTube Help recommends making a teaser or trailer and sharing the stream link at least 48 hours before an event. Treat that as advance promotion for a planned occasion, not a requirement for a stream that is already continuously live. YouTube’s advice appears on Promote your live stream.
- Choose the specific event, guest, or programming moment you want the teaser to sell.
- Make a short teaser that communicates what is happening and when, with an explicit mention of the ongoing live channel if relevant.
- Share the scheduled stream URL at least 48 hours before the event, following YouTube Help’s recommendation.
- Set expectations about where to find the stream. In the vertical live feed, viewers cannot click links in chat or the channel description.
For a live highlight
YouTube’s documented mobile-live highlight workflow has strict eligibility conditions. It is not a general promise that an encoder-based 24/7 broadcast can be turned into a Short.

- The live stream must run from 10 minutes to 12 hours.
- It must be vertical and streamed in the YouTube mobile app, not as a screencast.
- Chat must be enabled, the stream must not be Made for Kids, and it must meet YouTube’s safety standards.
If a stream qualifies, save a highlight when a strong moment occurs. The saved highlight defaults to private; review it and deliberately change visibility to Public if it is ready to be discovered. YouTube Help says setting a highlight’s visibility to “Public” can increase the reach of live content in the Shorts feed; that is platform guidance, not a guaranteed result. Use scheduled notifications for planned programming, not every loop
While browsing Shorts, viewers can opt into notifications for scheduled streams that begin within the next 24 hours. Use this for a premiere-like event, guest appearance, or another specific programming moment with a scheduled start. It is not a reliable way to notify viewers about every segment of an always-on stream. YouTube’s Shorts discovery guidance describes this notification behavior.

Check whether vertical live is bringing viewers
Use YouTube Studio traffic sources to look for traffic from the vertical live feed. That tells you whether viewers are arriving through this discovery surface; it does not establish that a particular promotional Short caused the visit. Do not assign a Shorts-to-live conversion rate without channel analytics that support it.
Copyright and programming checks for documentary channels
Promotion does not change the rules for the material in the live stream or its clips. Before using documentary footage, music, archive material, or excerpts in a live broadcast or Short, confirm that you have the rights or a valid basis to use it under the applicable rules. YouTube’s live promotion and eligibility guidance also makes clear that highlights must meet its safety requirements. A teaser should represent the stream accurately and should not imply that a short clip is the full program.
