For a 4K 60fps SDR YouTube Live stream, set OBS to 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps, use RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at this resolution and frame rate. For a resilient local recording, use MKV and remux it to MP4 in OBS if your editor or upload workflow needs MP4. Your available codecs and ability to stream and record simultaneously depend on your hardware, so test the full workload before going live.
Recommended OBS settings for 4K 60fps YouTube Live
These live settings are for SDR video. In OBS, open Settings → Video and set the output to 3840×2160 and the frame rate to 60 fps. Then open Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced, and configure the streaming encoder as follows. OBS labels can vary by version and selected encoder; use the equivalent option if a label differs.
| Setting | Recommended value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Video resolution and frame rate | 3840Ă—2160; 60 fps | Use a 4K canvas and output resolution if your production is meant to be 4K. Check that your source footage and scene composition support the output. |
| Ingestion protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate for the live encoder. |
| Bitrate | H.264: 50 Mbps; AV1 or H.265: 35 Mbps | These are YouTube’s recommended 4K/2160p 60fps rates, not a guarantee that your network or encoder can sustain them. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps stereo; 44.1 kHz for stereo | YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 128 Kbps stereo. For 5.1 audio, YouTube lists 384 Kbps at 48 kHz and says RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 is supported only for AAC. |
YouTube’s live encoder settings table also shows minimum settings at 4K60: 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Treat those as table minimums, not as recommended targets for a dependable high-quality stream. Choose the codec your OBS installation and encoder actually offer; codec availability varies by platform and hardware.
Advanced encoder options
YouTube’s recommended advanced video settings include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Apply these only if the selected OBS encoder exposes compatible controls. YouTube normally detects encoder settings automatically and transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so do not force an advanced option your encoder does not support.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For SDR, use Rec. 709 color and 8-bit output. These settings are distinct from HDR: YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR, calls for 10-bit, and does not support AV1 for HDR. At 4K, YouTube says low-latency optimization is unavailable; 4K streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency.
Choose a local recording format and encoder
Use MKV when recording resilience matters
In Settings → Output → Recording, choose MKV as the recording format when protecting a long capture from an ungraceful stop is important. OBS says MKV will not corrupt the whole file if recording does not stop gracefully. If an editor or upload workflow needs MP4, use OBS’s remux function after recording rather than making MP4 your only capture copy. Fragmented MP4 or MOV may also suit workflows that need direct editing or upload compatibility; choose based on the target software and the resilience you need.

Select a recording codec for your editing workflow
OBS’s formats guide gives a general quality-and-file-size direction of AV1, then HEVC, then H.264, but AV1 is not yet broadly supported by editing software. This is not a guarantee for every encoder or project. Use AV1 when both your encoder and editor support it; choose HEVC when your workflow supports it, or H.264 when broad compatibility matters more. Hardware encoder and codec availability depend on your system.
Decide whether recording should use a separate encoder
OBS’s Advanced Output mode lets you choose a recording encoder and quality separately from the live stream. This can preserve a higher-quality local copy, but a separate encoder uses additional resources. “Same as stream” is simpler and reuses the live settings, but OBS says this mode does not allow pausing recordings.

- High Quality: targets high quality with medium file size.
- Indistinguishable: targets higher quality with larger files and may affect older or weaker systems.
- Lossless: avoid for routine 4K60 recording unless you specifically need it and can handle the storage. OBS reports about 7 GB per minute and says this preset uses the CPU encoder.
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. That does not establish whether a particular computer can stream and separately record 4K60 without dropped frames; operating system, GPU, drivers, OBS version, encoder options, and scene workload all matter.
Test the complete stream before an event
- Confirm the YouTube stream setup. In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled live stream and copy its stream key into the stream settings in OBS. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Match OBS to the intended broadcast. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, keyframe interval, and audio settings described above. Confirm that the selected encoder supports the values you have chosen.
- Run a representative test. Test with movement, transitions, and audio similar to the real programme. If you will record locally, enable recording during the test so it exercises the same simultaneous workload.
- Check the connection and stream health. YouTube advises testing upload speed and monitoring stream health during the event. It does not establish one universal upload-speed multiplier in the cited settings guidance, so verify that your connection sustains the chosen stream rate rather than relying on a generic rule.
- Inspect the recording. Confirm that the file plays, that audio is in sync, and that your editor accepts the codec. If you recorded MKV but need MP4, remux it in OBS and inspect the resulting file before relying on it.
Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream buffers | The connection or encoder may not sustain the selected bitrate. | Check OBS and YouTube stream-health indicators, test the upload connection, and confirm the encoder is stable. Do not assume a recommended bitrate is achievable on every connection. |
| OBS does not offer AV1 or H.265 | The platform, hardware encoder, drivers, or OBS configuration may not expose that codec. | Use an available supported codec; H.264 is a practical compatibility choice. Do not assume every system offers every codec. |
| Recording or stream drops frames when both are active | The combined workload may exceed what the system can handle. | Test streaming and recording together. Consider using the same-as-stream recording mode or a less demanding recording quality, then test again. No general performance guarantee applies across systems. |
| The recording is too large | A high-quality or lossless preset can create very large files. | Use a less demanding quality preset if it meets your editing needs; avoid lossless for ordinary recording unless its storage requirements are acceptable. |
| The editor will not open the recording | The editor may not support the container or codec. | Remux MKV to MP4 in OBS when the container is the problem. If the codec is unsupported, choose a compatible recording codec for future captures. |
| The stream does not match the intended color or HDR format | SDR and HDR settings differ, and not all codec paths support HDR. | For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, follow YouTube’s H.265/10-bit guidance; AV1 is not supported for HDR. |
Copyright and channel rules still apply
Technical settings do not grant rights to the footage or music in a live broadcast. Before streaming or recording material, confirm that you have permission to use it and that the planned broadcast complies with YouTube’s policies. A technically healthy stream can still face copyright or other policy action.
