Best OBS Settings for 4K 60fps YouTube Live Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, set OBS output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use CBR, and set a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1; those codecs are not interchangeable unless your encoder and YouTube ingest path support the one you select. A stable 4K60 stream also depends on your source, encoder, computer, and upload connection.

Recommended OBS settings for YouTube 4K60

Setting Starting value Notes
Output resolution 3840×2160 In OBS, this is the resolution sent to YouTube. Match it to the source and production you can sustain.
Frame rate 60 fps Use only if the source, encoder, computer, and connection can maintain it.
Rate control CBR YouTube’s live guidance specifies constant bitrate.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Video bitrate 50 Mbps for H.264; 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1 YouTube’s recommended 4K/2160p 60 fps bitrates. Listed minimums are 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1.
Protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends its secure RTMP protocol.
Audio AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps stereo are listed in YouTube’s advanced guidance Choose settings compatible with your production and current YouTube ingest guidance.
Color, SDR Rec. 709, 8-bit YouTube’s SDR guidance.
Color, HDR HEVC, 10-bit YouTube recommends HEVC for HDR; its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that every PC or internet connection can sustain 4K60. YouTube’s live encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Set up OBS for 4K60, step by step

1. Set the canvas and output resolution

  1. Open Settings → Video in OBS.
  2. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 if your source and system can sustain 4K output.
  3. Choose Common FPS Values → 60.
  4. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to suit the normal resolution of your sources and scene layout. The canvas is where OBS arranges sources; output resolution is what OBS sends to YouTube. Scaling the output can be useful when those needs differ.

OBS explains these distinctions in its Studio Overview Guide.

2. Choose an encoder and configure streaming output

  1. Open Settings → Output. Select Advanced output mode if you need direct control over the codec and rate control.
  2. Under Streaming, choose an encoder and codec supported by both your OBS installation or hardware and YouTube ingest.
  3. Set rate control to CBR, the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and the bitrate to the matching codec recommendation in the table above.
  4. Use RTMPS where available. In YouTube’s live control room, use the stream key and ingest settings for the stream you intend to start; treat the key as a credential and do not share it publicly.

Do not pick AV1 or HEVC solely to use the lower recommended bitrate. Confirm that your encoder can produce it and that your complete streaming path accepts it. OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide describes compatibility considerations; hardware encoding can move work to specialized GPU components, but encoder quality and support vary by hardware generation and platform.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Configure audio and color for the actual production

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Its advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 128 Kbps stereo audio. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. HDR has different requirements: YouTube recommends HEVC and 10-bit, and its guidance excludes AV1 for HDR. Check the full current HDR ingest guidance before using an HDR workflow rather than copying SDR values into it.

4. Account for latency

YouTube says the “improve for low latency” option is unavailable for 4K/2160; 4K streams use normal latency. If lower latency is essential, reconsider the resolution and verify the available options in the live control room.

Choose a sustainable target, not just a high one

4K60 is useful when the source contains fine detail or fast movement and the whole production chain can preserve it. It also places heavier demands on encoding and upload capacity than a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate stream. OBS warns that 60-fps streaming can be taxing. If the encoder overloads, frames stutter, or the stream becomes unstable, lower the output resolution or try 30 fps; a consistent stream is preferable to an unsustainable target.

The listed bitrate is for outgoing video, not a promise that an internet speed test result is sufficient. Leave headroom for audio and ordinary connection variation. No single minimum upload-speed figure guarantees safe headroom across different networks, scenes, and conditions. Test using representative motion and detail from the real production, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s encoder instructions put it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Test before the scheduled stream

  1. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and scene complexity planned for the actual broadcast.
  2. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and watch OBS for rendering or encoding lag as well as YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
  3. Check fast motion, detailed scenes, transitions, and audio—not only a static opening screen.
  4. If performance is not stable, reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test again. Change one major variable at a time so you can identify the cause.

YouTube’s encoder workflow and external-video-hardware context are covered in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide covers steps to take when output performance is insufficient.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems

Symptom Likely area to check Practical response
Encoding or rendering lag in OBS System load, scene complexity, or encoder capacity Check OBS performance indicators; reduce output resolution or frame rate and test again. Encoder performance depends on hardware and settings.
Choppy motion or dropped frames during upload Upload stability or insufficient headroom at the selected video bitrate Check the connection under real streaming conditions, account for audio and variation, and lower the bitrate or output target if it remains unstable.
YouTube does not accept the selected codec Codec support mismatch between OBS encoder, hardware, and YouTube ingest Confirm end-to-end support and select a compatible codec; use that codec’s corresponding bitrate recommendation.
4K latency option is unavailable 4K/2160 is set to normal latency This is expected per YouTube’s guidance. Consider a lower resolution only if the workflow requires a different latency option.
HDR stream has incorrect color or ingest issues SDR settings applied to an HDR workflow or incompatible codec/bit depth Verify YouTube’s complete HDR requirements; its guidance recommends HEVC and 10-bit and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Do you need a capture card?

Only if your workflow needs to bring an external HDMI camera or console into the computer’s production. YouTube supports encoder workflows using external video hardware, but not every setup needs a capture card and no particular model is established as universally compatible. Check the source’s output, computer interface, capture format, operating system, and any passthrough requirement before buying.
