For a YouTube Live stream at 4K/2160p and 60 fps, set OBS to 50,000 Kbps for H.264 or 35,000 Kbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1, with CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube lists lower minimums—14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for H.265/AV1—but a stable connection and a capable encoder matter as much as the target number. Test with representative motion and audio before going live.
Recommended 4K60 bitrate and encoder settings
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends these ingest bitrates for 2160p at 60 fps. The Mbps values are YouTube’s figures; OBS accepts bitrate in Kbps, where 1 Mbps equals 1,000 Kbps.
| Ingest codec | YouTube recommendation | OBS video bitrate | YouTube-listed minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 50,000 Kbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 35 Mbps | 35,000 Kbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain a stream. The official figures are on YouTube’s live encoder settings page. Use the recommended target only if the encoder supports the selected codec and your upload connection can hold it steadily.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended ingest protocol.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps for the listed codecs.
For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Codec availability in OBS depends on its version, platform, and installed hardware.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up OBS for 4K at 60 fps
- Set the video output. Open Settings → Video. Set the output (scaled) resolution to 3840×2160 and the common FPS value to 60 if that is the format you intend to send. OBS distinguishes the base canvas resolution from the output resolution; check both so the stream is not unintentionally scaled.
- Choose the streaming encoder and codec. Open Settings → Output, select Advanced output mode if needed, then open the Streaming tab. Select an encoder that supports the ingest codec you plan to use. OBS’s options vary by system; do not assume every installation offers H.265 or AV1.
- Set rate control and bitrate. Choose CBR. Enter 50,000 Kbps for H.264, or 35,000 Kbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1, provided the connection and encoder can sustain the selected rate.
- Set keyframes. Enter 2 seconds for the keyframe interval. Avoid values above 4 seconds.
- Configure YouTube ingest. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or select the correct key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Test and monitor. Run an upload speed test, then make a private or unlisted test stream with motion and audio similar to the planned programme. Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s status before the event. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains how to investigate dropped frames.
OBS’s general overview covers output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate selection. It cautions that 60 fps can demand more system resources than 30 fps. These settings are not a hardware performance guarantee: test the actual scenes, encoder, and network you will use.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
The recommended number is a target for the video feed, not a suitable speed-test result to aim for. Leave upload capacity for audio and ordinary network variation, and avoid relying on a connection whose speed fluctuates around the required video bitrate. A test under realistic conditions is more useful than a single best-case speed result.

If H.264 at 50 Mbps is not stable, H.265/HEVC or AV1 has a lower YouTube-listed 4K60 recommendation, but only choose it if OBS and your hardware support encoding it reliably. A lower output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate may be the better trade-off when reliability matters more than retaining 4K60. Do not lower the bitrate below the official minimum and expect YouTube’s recommended quality.
Test before the event and diagnose problems
YouTube advises testing before starting, using audio and motion similar to the planned stream, and checking upload bitrate. A static slide is not a representative test for fast documentary footage, camera movement, or detailed scenes. Keep the test running long enough to reveal unstable upload or encoder performance.

| Symptom | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health deteriorates | The network connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Lower the bitrate, test again, and reduce output quality if necessary. Check the connection under the same conditions expected during the event. |
| OBS cannot select the intended codec or encoder | The installed OBS version, operating system, or hardware may not provide that encoding option. | Use an available supported encoder and its matching YouTube bitrate recommendation; confirm codec support in the installed setup before scheduling the stream. |
| The stream stutters even though the upload appears adequate | Encoding at 4K60 may exceed available system resources. | Check OBS performance indicators and test a lower frame rate or output resolution. OBS notes 60 fps can use more system resources than 30 fps. |
| Viewers do not see 4K immediately | YouTube processes live video into multiple viewer playback formats. | Allow processing and verify the available playback qualities. YouTube’s transcoding documentation explains viewer-format processing. |
4K60 latency and viewer playback
YouTube does not offer the low-latency option for 4K/2160p streams; 4K streams use normal latency. That affects how quickly viewers see the broadcast, so 4K60 may not fit a programme that depends on near-real-time audience interaction. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, meaning viewers’ playback quality can differ from the ingest resolution and depends on playback conditions.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Bitrate settings do not determine whether content is permitted on YouTube. Before broadcasting a documentary, confirm that you have the necessary rights for its footage, music, narration, and other material. Content that you are allowed to upload in one context may still trigger a live-stream claim or restriction. Review YouTube’s current live-stream policies and the rights attached to each asset before the event.
