Choose your upload target from the stream’s encoder bitrate, then leave additional capacity for headroom and other network use. YouTube recommends 20% room above the total stream bitrate, but no internet-plan speed guarantees a stable broadcast: upload performance can fluctuate, and other devices or streams share the connection.
YouTube live bitrate recommendations by resolution
The figures below are YouTube Help’s encoder ingestion settings, in Mbps—not required internet-plan speeds. “Recommended” is the encoder setting to use as a starting point; select the row that matches your resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, and the bitrate recommendation depends on the codec as well as the picture size and frame rate. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide is the source for these values; check it for changes before configuring a future stream.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For the standard 16:9 format, YouTube gives these dimensions: 720p is 1280×720, 1080p is 1920×1080, 1440p is 2560×1440, and 2160p is 3840×2160. The player can adapt to other aspect ratios. YouTube’s resolution guidance explains the format context.
How much upload speed do you need?
Your measured available upload capacity must be greater than the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube says the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Its guidance is operational advice, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. YouTube’s streaming tips also note that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth, so a fast download result or an ISP plan headline does not establish that your upload is sufficient.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Example: 1080p at 60 fps with H.264
YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder setting for 1080p60 is 17 Mbps. Adding 20% gives 20.4 Mbps of upload capacity as a practical target: 17 × 1.2 = 20.4. This is arithmetic applying YouTube’s headroom advice, not a separate threshold published by YouTube. If other streams or uploads use the connection at the same time, account for their bitrate too.
Use the right row for your setup
- Codec: Use the column for the codec your encoder sends. AV1/H.265 figures are not interchangeable with H.264 figures.
- Frame rate: At 1080p, for example, YouTube’s recommended H.264 setting is 14 Mbps at 30 fps and 17 Mbps at 60 fps.
- Resolution: Higher resolution usually calls for a higher recommended bitrate in the table, but the exact target also depends on frame rate and codec.
How to check whether your connection is ready
- Choose the stream settings. Decide on resolution, frame rate, and codec, then use YouTube’s table to set the encoder bitrate. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists CBR encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. For HDR, its guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in the described settings. See the live encoder settings guide.
- Measure upload speed. Run a speed test and look specifically at outbound/upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate; do not use download speed as a substitute.
- Allow headroom. Compare measured upload capacity with the total bitrate of all simultaneous streams and uploads. Keep at least the 20% margin YouTube recommends where possible.
- Run a representative test. Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A static screen or silent test may not reflect the actual stream load.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the event so you can respond to connection or encoder warnings.
A wired Ethernet connection may help avoid some wireless variability when your equipment and network support it, but it cannot raise the upload capacity supplied by your internet service. YouTube’s cited advice is to use a reliable network; it does not prescribe a cable category.

Common upload-speed problems and fixes
- Upload test is below the target: Lower the encoder bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. If possible, pause other uploads or streams sharing the connection.
- Speed test looks adequate, but the stream still drops frames: The test is a snapshot, while network performance can fluctuate. Reduce bitrate to create more margin, use a more reliable connection if available, and repeat the representative test.
- Download speed is high but upload is weak: Use the upload result for this decision. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth.
- Two or more broadcasts run at once: Add their total bitrates together before comparing with available upload capacity, then leave room for other network activity.
- Encoder settings do not match the chosen row: Confirm the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually selected in the encoder. A change to any of them can change the applicable recommendation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are streaming uploaded documentary footage as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo keeps it running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
StreamNeo accepts uploads and streams them as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, with card checkout worldwide.
