To rebroadcast a prerecorded event as a continuous YouTube Live stream, send the video through a live encoder connected to YouTube, set the encoder’s media source or playlist to repeat, and keep the encoder and its internet connection running. A replay on a YouTube watch page is not a live broadcast. YouTube provides encoder setup and streaming guidance, but does not prescribe a universal looping setup or guarantee indefinite uptime; test the repeat behavior and the complete stream before relying on it.
What you need for a continuous rebroadcast
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.
- A prerecorded event file that you have the rights to broadcast.
- A software or hardware encoder that can send video to YouTube and repeat a source or playlist.
- A reliable upload connection and power for the encoder setup, plus someone or something to monitor the stream.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Start setup well before the event. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance, since Studio labels and requirements can change.
Set up the prerecorded event as a YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a stream. In Live Control Room, set up the broadcast and retrieve the stream URL and stream key. The key lets your encoder send the feed to YouTube; treat it like a password and do not publish or share it.
- Load the event in an encoder. Use the file as the encoder’s video source, or add it to a playlist if your encoder supports playlists. Configure that encoder’s repeat or loop behavior. The exact control depends on the software or hardware; consult its current instructions rather than assuming YouTube has a universal loop switch.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Enter the stream URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings, then start the encoder. Confirm that the incoming picture and sound appear in Live Control Room before making the stream public.
- Choose a transport and video settings your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For H.264 at 1080p/30 fps, YouTube’s published encoder settings specify a 5 Mbps minimum and recommend 14 Mbps. These are encoder bitrate figures, not a promise that an internet plan with the same upload speed is sufficient. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; allow for other devices and traffic sharing the connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
- Preview and test the whole chain. Check the Live Control Room preview for image, sound, and stream health. Confirm playback on the public watch page and a mobile device, and verify that the video repeats and transitions as intended. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video during the stream.
- Keep the local operation running. With a computer-based encoder, the computer, encoder process, power, and network connection all need to remain available. Arrange monitoring and a plan for restarting the encoder or connection if either fails. When the event is over, stop the encoder; YouTube’s guidance recommends stopping it after the stream has stopped.
YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders. For a higher-production event it recommends considering professional-grade hardware, but that recommendation does not establish that a particular device supports continuous looping. Confirm repeat playback, playlist transitions, and recovery behavior with the exact encoder you choose.
Plan for a stream that may run beyond 12 hours
Do not depend on YouTube to archive a broadcast longer than 12 hours: YouTube says a stream exceeding that duration may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. If an archive matters, arrange a separate recording and test it, and plan how viewers will find the event if the broadcast is interrupted. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream archives and DVR.

Clear rights and understand monetization limits
A prerecorded file does not transfer broadcast rights to you. Before going live, confirm that your permissions cover the planned live broadcast and any archive, including footage, performances, music, and other material. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider must have necessary rights for use of live content, including music licensing rights. All live content must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; see YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
Repeated or mass-produced material may affect monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policy describes repetitive or mass-produced content as inauthentic and ineligible for monetization; its policy page records a clarification and renaming dated July 15, 2025. This is a monetization policy, not evidence that every rebroadcast is automatically prohibited. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and assess your specific content.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: check that the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are configured, and the channel is eligible for live streaming. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The event plays once and stops: the encoder’s source or playlist is not set to repeat, or the selected encoder does not support the behavior as configured. Check its instructions and test a complete playback cycle before the event.
- Video or audio stutters: check encoder stream health and available upload bandwidth. Reduce the encoder bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
- The stream ends unexpectedly: inspect the computer’s power and sleep settings, encoder process, and network connection. A local setup relies on all three staying available; monitor the feed and establish a restart procedure.
- There is no usable YouTube archive or rewind: streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Keep a separate recording if you need a dependable copy.
- You cannot run another stream: YouTube’s current guidance limits a channel to 10 active streams and a single stream key to 3 simultaneous streams. Check the active broadcasts and key assignments in Live Control Room.
