Crossfade the rain loop, monitor the finished signal for peaks, and listen to a recording or private test before going live. There is no established sleep-audio rule for thunder frequency, rain-to-thunder balance, or target loudness, so use a repeatable check rather than a supposed magic setting.
Build the mix with separate tracks
Keep rain running continuously and put thunder on its own track. Separate tracks let you adjust or reposition thunder without changing the rain bed. Choose the balance by listening in the context where people will hear the stream; no reviewed technical guidance sets a required rain-to-thunder ratio or thunder level for sleep audio.
You can assemble the tracks in a multitrack editor and send the finished mix to OBS, or bring the sources into OBS and mix them there. Adobe Audition is one example of an editor with clip-level volume matching, fades, and crossfades; it is not required. Adobe Audition: match, fade, and mix clip volume.
Make the rain loop seamless
- Find a usable loop point. Listen near the start and end of the rain recording. Avoid joining clips where a distinct splash, rumble, or sudden change in texture makes the repeat obvious.
- Overlap repeated clips. In a multitrack editor, place the next rain segment before the current one ends. Apply a crossfade so one clip fades out as the other fades in. The overlap determines the crossfade duration.
- Fade the overall start and end when appropriate. Fades can soften the beginning and ending of a recording, while crossfades handle joins between repeated clips.
- Preview the loop repeatedly. Listen at normal playback level and check for a change in loudness, a gap, a click, or a sudden shift in rain texture. Adjust the overlap or choose another join point if you hear one.
Adobe documents clip fades and overlapping crossfades in its Audition volume-matching guide. You can use the same general editing approach in another multitrack editor that supports fades and crossfades.

Set levels without clipping
Listen to the actual signal while adjusting it, and watch OBS’s peak-hold meter for occasional thunder peaks. The streamed output must stay below 0 dBFS: the OBS Project identifies 0 dBFS as the digital maximum and warns that signal at or above it can clip. A thunder hit can peak higher than the rain bed, so do not judge the mix only by its steady rain level.
OBS’s documented -20 dBFS alignment level and -9 dBFS permitted-maximum reference are meter conventions, not sleep-stream loudness targets. They do not prescribe how loud rain or thunder should sound. Make the adjustment by monitoring the output and checking a recording, not by treating those references as a recipe. See the OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Technical Details and Audio Mixer Guide.

Check stereo routing
OBS defaults to stereo. Confirm that both left and right channels carry the intended mix. OBS describes a mono source as being heard in both channels; check the meters and listen to the output to catch a source that has accidentally been routed to only one side.

Preflight the stream before going live
- Start OBS with the intended rain and thunder sources and confirm the correct mix is reaching the stream output.
- Monitor the signal while it plays. Watch for peak-hold readings that approach or reach the clipping ceiling, particularly during thunder.
- Record a short sample or make a private or unlisted test when practical. OBS recommends recording and listening back before going live.
- Listen to the sample through headphones and a small speaker or phone. This additional playback check is a practical way to catch a loop seam, missing channel, unexpectedly sharp thunder peak, or absent audio; it is not a stated OBS requirement.
- Fix any issue in the source, routing, or level, then repeat the check before starting the public stream.
Troubleshoot common mix problems
| What you hear or see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A click, gap, or obvious change each time rain repeats | The clip ends abruptly, the join points differ in texture, or the overlap is insufficient. | Choose a quieter join point, overlap the clips, apply a crossfade, and listen across several repeats. |
| Harsh distortion during thunder | A transient peak reaches or exceeds 0 dBFS. | Watch OBS peak-hold during the loudest events and lower the signal until the output remains below the clipping ceiling; record and listen back. |
| Rain or thunder is missing from one side | A stereo source may be routed incorrectly, or the mix may not be reaching both channels. | Check OBS’s left and right meters and listen to the output; verify the source’s channel routing. |
| The mix sounds different from what the OBS meters suggested | You may be judging the meter rather than the captured output or listening context. | Record a sample and audition it on the intended playback devices before going live. |
| A copyright claim or uncertainty about permission | The recording may have external license terms, attribution requirements, or rights not established by a generic “royalty-free” description. | Review the license for that specific recording. For Audio Library Creative Commons items, include YouTube’s supplied attribution text in the description. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube sleep stream made from an uploaded recording or playlist, StreamNeo keeps the channel live from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload your finished mix, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
