If a YouTube radio stream keeps buffering, compare the same stream on Wi-Fi and mobile data, then try a lower playback quality. That quickly shows whether the problem is more likely tied to one connection or to the device, app, or stream. Do not assume an Indian ISP is throttling YouTube without evidence from those comparisons.
First, find out whether the problem follows your connection or your device
- Play the same stream over Wi-Fi. Note whether it starts and continues without interruption.
- Switch to mobile data and replay that stream. Check your data plan before testing: playback and speed tests can use mobile data.
- If possible, try another device on the connection that buffered. Keep the stream and playback quality the same so the comparison is meaningful.
If it buffers on Wi-Fi but works on mobile data, investigate the Wi-Fi connection. If the reverse happens, focus on mobile coverage or that connection. If it buffers on both connections on one device but works on another, check the device, YouTube app, or browser. If several streams and devices fail across both connections, record what happens before contacting YouTube or your internet provider; the comparisons alone do not establish a wider outage.
Lower playback quality while diagnosing
Open the YouTube player’s settings and choose a lower quality. Depending on the device and video, the menu may include Auto, Data saver, Higher picture quality, or Advanced. YouTube says Higher picture quality uses more data and may take longer to start or buffer more often; Data saver lowers picture quality but may start faster. YouTube’s playback-quality guidance explains these options.
For a radio-style stream, audio may be the main point, but a video still has a selected picture quality that can affect how much data playback uses. Lowering it is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that the connection is fixed.

Check whether your connection can sustain the selected resolution
YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds are shown below. They are guidance for each resolution, not guarantees: shared bandwidth, weak Wi-Fi, or an unstable connection can still interrupt playback. YouTube Help also recommends checking speed, other network use, device data permissions, and Stats for nerds.
| Playback resolution | Approximate recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 4K | 20 Mbps |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s approximate recommendations, not a test of any Indian ISP. A speed test measures a connection at a particular time and does not by itself show how your device reaches YouTube or explain intermittent drops. Check that the connection has enough headroom while other people or devices are online.

For playback on a TV
YouTube’s separate TV troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD on TV. Keep this TV-specific recommendation separate from the resolution guidance above; they are not interchangeable measurements. The same guidance suggests checking the connection near the TV, reducing interference, and minimizing other connected devices. See YouTube’s TV playback troubleshooting steps.
Use Stats for nerds when the cause is not obvious
When playback is running or trying to load, open the player’s Stats for nerds diagnostics if your device offers them. Record the details alongside the selected quality, time, device, and connection. This gives YouTube support or your provider more useful context than “the internet is slow.”

If the stream buffers only on home Wi-Fi
- Retry close to the router. If playback improves, distance, walls, or interference may be contributing.
- Reduce obstructions between the router and the device where practical, and test again.
- Temporarily pause large downloads or other heavy network use, then replay the same stream.
- Restart the router and device, then retest. Airtel’s 2023-03-16 buffering guide also suggests restarting and checking shared bandwidth; it is provider-authored advice, not independent evidence of comparative ISP performance.
If these tests point to weak coverage, try repositioning the router before considering new equipment. A router purchase or provider change is not a general cure for YouTube buffering; first establish that the issue follows your home connection and compare actual playback where you listen.
If it happens only in the YouTube app or browser
Android YouTube app
- Update YouTube from the app store.
- Clear the YouTube app cache in Android’s app settings, then reopen the app and retry. Clear cache rather than treating “clear storage” as the same action.
- Check that the device is allowed to use the relevant connection, particularly mobile data, then test again.
Web browser
- Update the browser and retry the stream.
- Open an Incognito or private window. If playback improves, test with extensions disabled, especially ad-blocking extensions; YouTube advises checking whether extensions affect playback.
- If the issue persists, clear the browser cache and cookies and test again.
YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking DNS settings and confirming that third-party apps have not altered the preferred DNS server. Treat DNS as a targeted check, not a reason to switch to a particular public DNS service: YouTube does not prescribe one as a universal fix.

When to contact YouTube or your provider
If the problem continues across multiple devices, connections, and streams, gather these details before asking for help:
- the date and time of the interruption;
- the affected stream or streams;
- device model and whether you used the YouTube app or a browser;
- Wi-Fi or mobile data, and whether the same stream worked on the other connection;
- selected playback quality and any relevant Stats for nerds details;
- whether other devices or people were using the connection at the same time.
Send playback feedback to YouTube or contact your provider with those observations. The available evidence does not establish a current India-wide YouTube fault or identify a particular Indian provider as the cause. Avoid treating a VPN, DNS change, or ISP switch as a guaranteed repair; test reversible settings first and restore them if they do not help.

Background listening and buffering are separate questions
A subscription feature may affect background playback, offline access, or ads, but it does not repair an unstable connection. Google India announced on 12 March 2026 that additional Premium Lite features were beginning to roll out to subscribers in India, including background playback and offline downloads for most videos. The announcement says Premium remains the option for all videos, including music content, and YouTube Music Premium. Check current India plan terms and availability; a plan is not a buffering fix.
Or let it run in the cloud
If by “radio stream” you mean keeping your own prerecorded video live on a YouTube channel around the clock, that is a different problem from buffering while you listen. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a home computer or connection staying on. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
