How to Make a Looping Relaxation Stream Use Less CPU in OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with one simple OBS scene and a local Media Source with Loop enabled. Then check whether OBS is limited by encoding or scene rendering, try a compatible hardware encoder if available, and reduce unnecessary sources before lowering resolution or frame rate. Change one setting at a time and test the result: there is no documented CPU-saving percentage that applies to every computer or video.

Set up the loop with a minimal scene

A looping video does not require a complex scene. In OBS, add a Media Source for the relaxation video, then open its properties and enable Loop. OBS describes this option as replaying the file after playback completes. See the [OBS Media Sources guide].

  1. In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source.
  2. Create a new source, give it a clear name, and select the local video file.
  3. In the source properties, enable Loop, then select OK.
  4. Keep only elements the broadcast needs, such as a title or a simple logo. Remove unused sources, browser overlays, and filters while troubleshooting.

OBS’s documented labels can vary with version and platform. If your properties window differs, use the current Media Source controls in your installed version rather than assuming an option is missing. The same properties may offer Hardware Decoding when the file and system support it. Try that option both on and off and compare; it is not a guaranteed CPU reduction.

First find out what is consuming resources

High CPU use alone does not tell you whether the problem is video encoding, scene rendering, or another bottleneck. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render a scene, so lowering CPU encoding work will not make a complicated scene free to render. The [OBS encoding performance troubleshooting guide] recommends simplifying scenes when resources are constrained.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Note CPU use during a representative test with the same scene and output settings you intend to use.
  • Watch for signs of rendering or encoding trouble in OBS’s status information, not just the operating system’s CPU figure.
  • Remove sources you do not need, reduce demanding filters, and limit browser sources. OBS notes that sources may use resources even when they are not visible.

Keep the media source at a sensible size for the output. If a very large video is displayed much smaller, a more appropriately sized source may avoid unnecessary work, though the effect depends on the file, scene, and hardware.

Try a hardware encoder if your system supports one

A hardware encoder can move video-encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component of the GPU or processor. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, but the available choices depend on your operating system and hardware. Its [hardware encoding guide] lists NVENC and AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, Intel Quick Sync on Windows and Linux, and VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The guide qualifies that VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported on Intel Macs.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Open Settings in OBS and select Output.
  2. Check the encoder choices shown for your current output mode and operating system.
  3. If a compatible hardware encoder is available, select it and run a test using the same scene, video, resolution, and frame rate as your baseline.
  4. Compare CPU use, stream smoothness, and picture quality. Keep the change only if the result suits your stream.

Encoder names and availability can change between OBS versions and machines. Do not assume a hardware encoder is supported just because another computer offers it, or that it will always produce better quality than software encoding. The OBS guide’s example recording bitrates for Intel Macs are recording-specific examples, not evidence of CPU savings for a live relaxation stream.

Adjust resolution or frame rate only if needed

Output resolution and frame rate affect processing demand, but reducing them changes the picture or motion. OBS identifies 60 fps as potentially more taxing than 30 fps, and notes that lowering output resolution can reduce encoder load. The [OBS system requirements] also explain that requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Frame rate: Consider testing 30 fps instead of 60 if the relaxation footage still looks smooth enough at the lower rate.
  • Resolution: If the stream is struggling, test a lower output resolution and check whether the loss of detail is acceptable.
  • Source and output: Avoid needlessly oversized media or output settings beyond what the intended viewing experience requires.

There is no universal best setting for every relaxation video. Make one adjustment at a time so you can identify which change helped and which tradeoff you accepted.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

Use a test recording or a private/unlisted test stream as appropriate for your setup, then review the result for dropped or uneven frames, audio-video sync, and image quality. OBS recommends testing settings before a real broadcast in its [Quick Start Guide]. Repeat the test after each meaningful change; a result on one machine does not establish what another computer will achieve.

Troubleshoot common CPU and performance problems

Symptom What to check Practical next step
CPU remains high with a single video source Whether the selected encoder is software-based, and whether other applications or sources are active Try a compatible hardware encoder, close unnecessary sources and applications, then test again.
OBS reports rendering trouble or frames are not smooth Scene complexity, browser sources, filters, and GPU load Simplify the scene and remove effects or overlays that are not essential. CPU changes alone may not fix a rendering bottleneck.
The video does not restart at the end The Media Source’s Loop property Open the source properties, enable Loop, and test through the file’s end.
Hardware decoding makes performance worse or changes nothing Whether the format and hardware support decoding, and whether the option is enabled Compare with hardware decoding disabled. Keep whichever setting works better on that system.
Lower settings improve performance but the stream looks worse Output resolution and frame rate Restore the higher setting or test an intermediate option; choose based on the actual viewing tradeoff.
A hidden source seems to keep using resources Whether OBS still has the source loaded or active Remove unused sources from the scene. The Media Source’s Close when inactive option may release memory when hidden, but can add a reload delay and is not a general CPU-saving guarantee for a continuously visible loop.
