Why Does OBS Stop Looping Videos During a Church YouTube Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most often, the video source’s repeat setting or visibility behavior is responsible—not YouTube. In OBS, a Media Source’s Loop option is off by default. A VLC Video source has a separate playlist loop setting, but by default it stops when hidden and restarts when visible. First identify the source and check its properties; if OBS plays normally while YouTube freezes, troubleshoot the encoder or connection instead.

First identify what is actually stopping

Watch the OBS preview and, if available, a local recording while comparing them with the YouTube stream. The comparison separates two stages: playback inside OBS and delivery from OBS to YouTube. If the preview or recording stops at the same point, start with the source and its playback settings. If those continue normally but YouTube freezes, drops frames, or disconnects, investigate the encoder and outbound connection.

  • Video reaches the end in OBS and stays on its last frame or disappears: check the source’s loop and end-of-playback settings.
  • Video stops or starts over after a scene change: check whether the source became hidden or active, and inspect its visibility behavior.
  • OBS keeps playing but YouTube freezes or disconnects: check encoder status, CPU load, local recording, and network stability.
  • OBS cannot start the YouTube stream: check the stream key and YouTube Live configuration.

The exact cause in a particular setup depends on the source type, its properties, scene changes, OBS version, and whether local playback also stops.

Check the OBS source’s loop settings

Media Source

In the OBS Sources list, select the video source and open Properties. If it is a Media Source, make sure Loop is checked. OBS documents this option as off by default; when enabled, the file plays again after reaching the end. The OBS Media Sources documentation was published on January 11, 2022, so labels may vary in later versions.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Also check Restart playback when source becomes active. This controls whether playback starts over when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible. It is different from looping: loop repeats a completed file, while restart-on-active affects what happens when the source becomes active.

VLC Video

VLC Video is a separate source type for playlists, not the same as Media Source. In its properties, inspect Loop Playlist and Visibility Behaviour. OBS documents playlist looping as on by default, but the default visibility behavior is to stop when the source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. That can look like a failed loop when you switch scenes.

The VLC Video source only appears when VLC is installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit VLC is required.

Check scene changes and end-of-file behavior

A source can be hidden or unloaded when it is not in the active scene, depending on its settings. Before changing streaming settings, switch scenes while watching the preview and note whether the source pauses, stops, restarts, or returns after a delay.

  • Show nothing when playback ends: this end-of-file option hides the completed source. If looping is off, the result may be a blank area rather than a visible final frame.
  • Close file when inactive: this unloads the file when the source is hidden or off the current scene. Returning to the scene can therefore involve a reload delay.
  • Restart playback when source becomes active: this can make the video begin again on a scene or visibility transition rather than continue from where it stopped.

These behaviors are distinct. In particular, OBS documentation does not say that closing a file when inactive disables the loop setting, so do not assume that one option is the sole cause.

If OBS plays but YouTube freezes or drops frames

When local playback or recording is healthy but viewers see a freeze, look beyond the media source. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and its reported errors, CPU load, and a local archive. If the local output is fine, test outbound internet connectivity. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; it recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable.

If OBS cannot start the YouTube stream

A stream key directs the encoder’s feed to YouTube; it does not control whether a video file repeats. If a third-party encoder reports an error when starting, YouTube advises replacing the stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings govern whether the live stream can be started or stopped from the encoder. These are stream-lifecycle settings, separate from the OBS source’s loop behavior.
