Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can loop podcast files into a YouTube Live stream with FFmpeg by creating a Live Control Room event, supplying an audio file and a visual, and sending the encoded output to YouTube’s ingest URL with your stream key. The loop repeats only while FFmpeg is running; it does not, by itself, restart a crashed process or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to live stream. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 and says channels must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility rules.
- FFmpeg installed on an always-on computer or server, plus the podcast media you have the right to use.
- A stable upstream network connection sized for your chosen video bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom.
- A still image or other deliberate visual to accompany the podcast audio. Check that you have rights to every episode, music bed, image, and other asset in the stream.
YouTube Live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. The rights status of any particular podcast catalog depends on the licenses and permissions you hold; do not assume that owning or possessing a recording grants streaming rights.
Create the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then set its title, description, privacy, and other event details.
- In the stream settings, copy the current ingest URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key secret: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, shared command, or log. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance.
- Use the RTMPS ingest URL if it is offered for your event. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection. Follow the exact server URL format shown in the current Live Control Room.
Prepare the media and FFmpeg command
Loop an audio file
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats the input that follows it indefinitely. Put the option before the audio input because FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output. Pair the audio with a still image or another intentional visual; a live video stream requires a video track, not just podcast audio.
The following is a command pattern, not a copy-and-run command: replace the file names, image handling, ingest URL, and key with values that match your setup and the current Live Control Room. Confirm the image input is configured to remain available for the duration of the audio stream; exact image loop or duration options can depend on the media and installed FFmpeg build.

ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -i cover.jpg -stream_loop -1 -i episode.mp3
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
That example uses H.264 video at 720p/30 fps only if the image input is also given the appropriate output size, and sets a two-second GOP at 30 fps. Add an explicit scale and pixel-format filter appropriate to your image and target profile, for example -vf "scale=1280:720,format=yuv420p". If your image is a different aspect ratio, choose whether to crop, pad, or preserve it rather than stretching it. Replace the placeholder destination with the actual URL and key format YouTube supplies; avoid leaving the key in shell history or public process logs. For a production setup, use a secret-management method appropriate to your operating system and keep command output private.
-re reads file input at its native rate and is useful when output packet timing needs to be real-time, as in live streaming. Do not blindly throttle a true live capture or network source. FFmpeg documents input looping and read-rate options in its command-line documentation.

Choose an ingest profile
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table; use that live table when configuring, since platform recommendations can change.
| Example H.264 target | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Two-second GOP at |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 60 frames |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 60 frames |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 120 frames |
These are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not independent test results; YouTube lists separate values for other codecs and minimums. A podcast cover-art stream often does not need a high resolution or frame rate. Choose a supported profile that your connection can sustain and configure the keyframe interval to match the chosen frame rate.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Start FFmpeg before the intended public start time, then check the Live Control Room preview for a stable picture, audible sound, and a healthy connection.
- Confirm the event is viewable from the channel’s watch page and on a mobile device. Check the audio for clipping, silence, unexpected gaps, and the transition at the loop point.
- Check the local recording if you are making one, and test any failover or restart procedure you plan to rely on.
- Keep monitoring FFmpeg’s process status, host resources, free disk space, and the network path. These are practical operational checks, not a guarantee of availability.
YouTube advises setting up the encoder well ahead of time, previewing the stream, testing failover, and monitoring audio and video. Its network advice calls for 20% headroom; where you operate primary and backup streams, account for both bitrates plus that headroom. A network disruption can break a stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and network guidance. A wired network connection is an optional way to avoid relying on Wi-Fi, but YouTube does not specify a cable category or speed.
Keep FFmpeg running—and plan for failure
An infinite input loop only repeats while the FFmpeg process remains alive and connected. FFmpeg’s loop option is not a process supervisor, reconnect guarantee, or service-level uptime promise. For an unattended deployment, use an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor configured to restart a failed process, and add alerting so a restart or prolonged outage does not go unnoticed. Validate the behavior with your installed FFmpeg build and actual network; a restart may require checking or restarting the YouTube event as well.

Consider the trade-offs between a local machine and a dedicated host: either can run FFmpeg, but continuity depends on power, network, monitoring, and restart setup. The sources do not establish a minimum computer specification or validate a hosting provider. Encoding workload varies with codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether encoding uses hardware acceleration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the archive limit
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a promise that one event can run indefinitely or that a single 24/7 event will become one complete archive. Plan how to handle event segments, recordings, and restarts, and verify current behavior in Studio. See YouTube’s encoder setup page.

Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube never receives the stream: Check that the server URL and key match the current event, that the key has not been reset, and that the destination uses the correct RTMP(S) format. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
- FFmpeg exits or stops looping: Check the process output and exit status, confirm the media file remains accessible, and verify that
-stream_loop -1precedes the intended audio input. Use a supervisor if the process must restart after failure. - Preview is black or the image ends: Verify that a video input is present and configured to last as long as the audio. Check image dimensions and scaling filters, then preview again before going public.
- Audio is silent, clipped, or out of sync: Confirm the intended audio input and codec, listen to the loop transition, and inspect FFmpeg output for input or encoding errors. Adjust audio gain or encoding only after identifying the problem.
- Connection is unstable or YouTube reports dropped frames: Lower the video bitrate or resolution to a profile your upstream can sustain, preserve the recommended bandwidth headroom, and inspect the host’s network path. YouTube warns that disruptions can break the stream.
- The stream disconnects and does not return: Treat that as a process, host, or network recovery issue rather than an input-loop issue. Check FFmpeg status, logs, supervisor behavior, and the event state in Live Control Room; test your recovery procedure before relying on it.
