Yes—but not simply because someone watches again. A repeat viewer can contribute to your YouTube live-stream ad revenue if YouTube serves an ad during a monetized stream. Repeat viewing does not guarantee an ad or create a separate payment for the returning viewer.
When a repeat viewer can generate ad revenue
Your channel must be eligible for monetization, and monetization must be enabled for the live stream. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads turn on automatically with live monetization; mid-roll ads can be automatic, scheduled, or inserted manually. Even when a slot is available, YouTube does not guarantee it will serve an ad. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream.
Whether an ad appears can depend on ad availability and targeting, the viewer’s location and YouTube Premium status, and how recently that viewer saw an ad. YouTube’s systems decide whether to fill slots while balancing viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. A returning viewer may therefore see an ad on one visit and none on another.
For ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live content watched on the YouTube Watch Page or embedded YouTube Video Player, creators must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. See YouTube Help: Choose how you want to monetize.

Views, ad impressions, and monetized playbacks are different
A view is not automatically an ad impression. YouTube defines an ad impression as an ad displayed. A monetized playback is a video playback that included at least one ad impression; one playback can include more than one ad. As a result, total views alone do not show how many playbacks carried ads or how many ads were displayed. YouTube Help: Understand ad revenue analytics.
What CPM and RPM tell you
- CPM: advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube’s revenue share.
- Playback-based CPM: advertiser cost per 1,000 playbacks that included one or more ads.
- RPM: creator revenue after YouTube’s share per 1,000 views. It can combine multiple revenue sources.
These metrics describe different stages and denominators. Multiplying a CPM figure by total views does not calculate your creator payout. For a particular live stream, use its Analytics figures rather than assuming every repeat view earned ad revenue.

How to check live-stream ad revenue
- Open YouTube Analytics for your channel.
- Choose the Live filter to review revenue from live streams and live replays.
- Compare revenue with the relevant analytics measures, such as estimated monetized playbacks and ad impressions, rather than treating total views as paid events.
YouTube’s Analytics guidance explains these revenue measures at Understand ad revenue analytics. Platform-level data does not reveal whether a particular repeat viewer received an ad in a specific session.
Does enabling mid-roll ads help?
YouTube recommends automatic mid-roll ads. Creators can also schedule or manually insert mid-rolls, but YouTube says those approaches can have lower earnings potential than automatic placement. The available choices are about ad placement—not a way to charge repeat viewers. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

In January 2024, YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled automatic live mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries. This is a group comparison, not a forecast for an individual channel and not evidence that repeat viewers alone caused the difference. YouTube Help: Tips on how to make money on YouTube — Live.
Other ways eligible live creators may earn
Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Shopping, and YouTube Premium revenue are separate monetization routes listed by YouTube for eligible creators. They should not be confused with ad revenue earned when an ad is served. See YouTube’s live monetization tips.
