To offer gifted memberships on a YouTube livestream in India, first enable channel memberships in YouTube Studio. Viewers then buy gifts from an eligible livestream or Premiere’s live chat, and potential recipients must opt in. India is listed as a supported location for channel memberships, but individual eligibility and the gifting control can depend on the channel and account.
Who can enable channel memberships?
Memberships are a YouTube monetization feature. YouTube’s published minimum eligibility thresholds include:
- 500 subscribers;
- three public uploads in the past 90 days; and
- either 3,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the past 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the past 90 days.
Meeting those thresholds does not guarantee approval. The channel must be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and meet feature-specific conditions. You must be at least 18, live in a location where memberships are available, accept and comply with the Commerce Product Module (CPM), and have no Made for Kids designation or significant number of ineligible videos. YouTube says Made for Kids videos and videos with music claims count as ineligible; some music channels may also be excluded. India is on YouTube’s supported creator-location list. Turn on memberships in YouTube Studio
- Open Studio on a computer. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Earn in the left menu.
- Open Memberships. If the channel is eligible, select Get started and follow the on-screen setup prompts. The tab may not appear for channels that are not eligible.
- Accept the CPM. YouTube requires the channel owner (and MCN, if applicable) to accept the Commerce Product Module to earn membership revenue.
- Set up levels and perks. Create membership levels and describe benefits clearly. Choose perks the channel can deliver consistently.
- Allow for review. After YPP acceptance, YouTube says membership activation can take up to two days while it reviews the channel.
Use YouTube’s computer setup instructions for the current Studio flow. Membership gifting is not switched on from the Studio setup screen; check for its control in live chat once memberships are configured.

How a viewer buys gifted memberships
Gift purchases happen in the live chat of an eligible livestream or Premiere. The buyer needs to be signed in and should rely on the amount shown at checkout for their account and region.
- Join the channel’s eligible livestream or Premiere.
- Open the live-chat controls and select Membership gifting, if it is available.
- Choose how many viewers to gift memberships to.
- Review the displayed price and complete the transaction.
YouTube describes gift levels as the closest highest available price level up to and including US$9.99. That is not a fixed India gift price: check checkout rather than estimating from the channel’s regular membership tier. YouTube considers the purchase fulfilled once it distributes the first gift. A countdown ticker appears in chat for a limited time; distribution still occurs if the livestream or chat ends before the announcement. Chat publicly displays the number of gifts, the purchaser’s channel name, and profile picture, and this information may be shared with third-party services through the channel’s API access. How viewers opt in to receive a gift
A viewer is not automatically eligible just because they are watching. To receive a gift, they must be subscribed to the channel, have interacted with it recently, and opt in. They need to be signed in to a YouTube channel that is not a Brand Account. Someone who is already a member of that channel cannot receive a gifted membership.
- In live chat, select ALLOW GIFTS or the pinned membership-gifting control, then turn on Allow gifts.
- Alternatively, on the channel or watch page, select Join > More > Gift settings and enable the switch.
To opt out later, return to Gift settings and turn the switch off. A selected recipient is announced in chat and receives an email notification. Gifted access lasts up to one month; gifts are non-recurring, so the recipient is not charged when access ends. Gifts are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for cash value. India availability, prices, and payments
YouTube lists India as a location where eligible creators can use channel memberships. That does not mean every creator has passed eligibility review or that every viewer in India will see the gifting control. Gift availability should be checked in the channel and account where the purchase is being made.
YouTube’s India pricing page lists current channel-membership level prices from ₹59 to ₹39,999, with a new pricing rollout that began gradually in May 2025. These are regular membership level prices, not a definitive price list for gifts. The same page includes older, legacy tiers, so the price for a particular channel can differ. For recurring membership payments in India, YouTube says viewers may need to verify or re-enter payment details under RBI eMandate requirements. This concerns recurring billing, not a universal gift checkout rule. If a gift purchase reports “We couldn’t verify your country,” YouTube advises trying another network or device and disabling an active VPN or proxy. Details are in YouTube’s billing and payment help.

- Memberships is missing in Studio: Check YPP acceptance, the published thresholds, channel content restrictions, location, and required agreements. The tab appears only for eligible channels.
- You recently joined YPP: Allow up to two days for YouTube’s membership activation review.
- The gifting control is missing from chat: Confirm memberships are active and that you are viewing an eligible livestream or Premiere. The channel or account may not qualify, or the feature may not be available in that context. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a single India-specific cause.
- No viewer receives a gift: Check that potential recipients are subscribed, recently interacted with the channel, opted in, use a non-Brand Account channel, and are not already members.
- Checkout cannot verify the country: Try another network or device, and disable an active VPN or proxy.
Review gifts and promotional memberships
Track gifted and redeemed memberships
In YouTube Studio Analytics, open Revenue > How you make money > Memberships. Use Memberships Type and select a time period to review gift and redeemed membership counts. YouTube describes the creator share as 70% of membership revenue after applicable taxes and fees are deducted, with transaction costs currently covered by YouTube. This is a general revenue-share description, not a guaranteed take-home amount for an individual channel; taxes and channel arrangements can affect proceeds. Understand promotional gifts
YouTube says creators with a membership tier below US$5 may receive promotional gifts to distribute each month. These are not charged to the creator or viewer and earn no revenue. They are offered on the first of each month, do not roll over, and must be distributed in sets of five before paid gifts can be purchased. Promotional gifts are distributed from livestream or Premiere live chat and are not currently available for Brand Accounts. See YouTube’s membership promotion guidance.
