If FFmpeg is sending video to YouTube but viewers hear nothing, check the audio from source to stream: confirm the source has an audio track, make sure FFmpeg maps that track into the output, verify the outgoing codec and audio layout meet the selected YouTube ingest protocol’s requirements, then use YouTube Live’s stream-health message to narrow down the fault. Without the command, source details, ingest protocol and health message, there is no way to identify one definite cause.
1. Confirm that the source actually contains audio
Start with the recording or capture input, not YouTube. A video file can have no audio stream, and audio may instead come from a separate input. Inspect FFmpeg’s input information and listen to the source independently. If the outgoing stream contains no audio stream, YouTube Live can report a noAudioStream issue.
When audio comes from a separate device or file, identify that input and its stream index before changing the command. A successful video input does not establish that FFmpeg is receiving the intended sound.
2. Check that FFmpeg includes the intended audio track
Look for -an, which disables audio in the output. Also review every -map option: when mapping is specified, FFmpeg does not automatically select streams, so a map that selects only video—or the wrong audio track—can produce a silent output.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
With multiple inputs or audio tracks, map the intended video and audio explicitly using the actual input and stream indices shown by your source. Do not copy a generic mapping without first checking the input layout; the correct indices depend on the file or capture setup.
3. Verify what FFmpeg emits
Read FFmpeg’s output around the Stream mapping: section and confirm that an audio stream is listed in the output. Check that its codec, sample rate, channel count and bitrate are what you intended. This confirms what FFmpeg is sending, rather than merely what exists in the source.

FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder defaults to 128 kbps when no AAC bitrate is specified. That default does not prove that the source has audible audio, that the correct track was selected, or that the chosen YouTube protocol accepts the rest of the output configuration.
4. Match the audio settings to YouTube’s ingest protocol
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as accepted audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS. Its recommended settings are:

| Audio layout | Recommended sample rate | Recommended bitrate | Codec note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 44.1 kHz | 128 kbps | AAC or MP3 accepted |
| 5.1 | 48 kHz | 384 kbps | AAC required for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS |
These are YouTube’s listed recommended settings, not a diagnosis of your specific stream. Use the stream-health message to determine whether a codec, sample rate, channel count or other audio issue is actually being flagged.
HLS
HLS has different requirements: YouTube specifies AAC audio, a single audio track, and audio/video muxed in M2TS. An RTMP/RTMPS command should not be assumed suitable for HLS ingestion; verify the requirements for the protocol selected in your streaming setup.

5. Use YouTube Live health messages to choose the next fix
Test with representative audio and video before the event, and monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room while streaming. YouTube’s diagnostics can flag missing audio, unsupported codecs, multiple audio streams, too many channels, sample-rate problems, and primary/backup mismatches. Use the specific issue shown to guide the next correction instead of guessing from silent playback alone.

| What you find | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The source itself is silent, or has no audio stream | Confirm the recording or capture source and, if applicable, identify the separate audio input. |
| The input has sound, but the output listing has no audio stream | Review for -an and check whether -map excludes the intended track. |
| The output lists audio, but YouTube reports an audio issue | Follow the health message; verify codec, sample rate, channel count and number of audio streams against the selected protocol. |
| The command targets HLS | Check HLS’s AAC, single-track and M2TS requirements rather than applying RTMP/RTMPS assumptions. |
| The command and health message are unavailable or inconclusive | Collect the FFmpeg input and output stream listings, the command’s mapping options, the ingest protocol and YouTube’s exact health message before attempting a more specific diagnosis. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded documentary or other uploaded video that should loop as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not an FFmpeg audio repair tool. You do not need to keep a computer or home connection running; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
