YouTube Live Playlist Streaming vs. Looping a Single Video

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To repeat one video in YouTube’s player, turn on Loop; to cycle through several videos, turn on playlist repeat. Neither action creates a YouTube Live broadcast. Live is a separate workflow: it sends a real-time feed to viewers, typically through a mobile device, webcam, or encoder. If you want uploaded videos to appear as a live feed, you need a separately configured production workflow—not the player’s repeat button.

Looping a video and streaming live are different

Looping changes how an existing video or playlist plays for someone watching in YouTube. A live stream broadcasts a feed in real time and can include live chat. YouTube Help describes live streaming as letting creators interact with their audience in real time “with a video feed, chat, and more.” YouTube’s live-streaming overview lists mobile, webcam, and encoder as ways to go live.

For a documentary channel, the practical distinction is whether you want viewers to watch an existing upload repeat in the player, or you want to run a live broadcast. YouTube’s documented repeat controls cover playback. They do not describe a native Live Control Room feature that turns an uploaded-video playlist into the broadcast source. To broadcast a prepared sequence as a live feed, you would need an encoder or other production workflow configured for that purpose.

Choose the right option for your goal

Your goal Use What viewers experience
Repeat one existing video Single-video Loop The same video starts again in the YouTube player.
Cycle through several existing videos Playlist repeat The playlist sequence starts again after the final item.
Broadcast in real time with live chat or a scheduled event YouTube Live A live feed, with features such as chat and potentially DVR, depending on settings.
Present uploaded videos as a live feed A separately configured encoder or production workflow The encoder sends its output to YouTube Live; exact setup and continuity depend on the software and configuration.

How to repeat one video or a playlist

On a computer

  1. To repeat one video, play it, then right-click the video player and choose Loop.
  2. To repeat a playlist, play a video from that playlist, expand the playlist panel, and select the playlist’s Loop control.

A playlist is a collection of videos, so playlist repeat cycles through that collection rather than creating a new broadcast. YouTube’s current instructions are in Loop videos or playlists on YouTube – Computer and Create and manage playlists – Computer.

What it takes to go live on YouTube

For an actual live event, choose a streaming method supported by YouTube: mobile, webcam, or encoder. YouTube describes encoders as useful for sharing a screen or gameplay, connecting external audio or video hardware, and managing more advanced production. You do not need an encoder merely to use the ordinary video or playlist repeat controls.

Before planning a broadcast, check YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility and setup guidance. Its general prerequisites include a verified channel without live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days and a minimum age of 16; requirements can differ by method. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable and verify access before the event rather than assuming you can start immediately.

If your intended live feed is a sequence of uploaded documentaries, confirm that your chosen encoder can assemble and send that sequence, that you have rights to broadcast every asset, and how the software behaves if its input or connection fails. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not establish a universal playlist-ingest workflow or guarantee unattended continuity. Consult the encoder’s own documentation for its exact playlist, looping, and recovery controls.

Live settings that affect viewers afterward

DVR: pause and rewind during a live stream

YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and device or app versions can impose lower limits. If DVR is off, viewers cannot seek back while the broadcast is live, though a recording may be available afterward. See Turn on DVR on live streams for the current setting details.

Archives and visibility

YouTube says live-stream archives are uploaded to the channel by default. Their visibility settings still matter: do not assume every archive will be public or discoverable. You can organize an archive and highlight clips into playlists; YouTube covers this in its live-stream promotion guidance.

Copyright and documentary-channel considerations

Whether you repeat a video in the player or include it in a live encoder output, you need the rights and permissions required for the material you use. A playback loop is not a license, and putting an existing upload into a live production does not by itself establish broadcast rights. Check music, footage, narration, and other third-party material before scheduling a stream. Also distinguish copyright permission from YouTube monetization eligibility: a channel’s eligibility for monetization is a separate question from whether it can technically loop playback or start a live stream.

Common problems and what to check

  • The video plays once and stops: confirm you enabled the player’s single-video Loop control; playlist repeat is a different control.
  • The playlist stops at the last item: enable Loop from the playlist panel, not just the single-video repeat setting.
  • Only one playlist item repeats: on Android, check whether the loop icon shows “1”; tap the control again if you meant to repeat the full playlist.
  • You cannot start a live stream: verify channel eligibility and live access, check for restrictions, and allow for first-time enablement, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours.
  • Viewers cannot rewind during the broadcast: check whether DVR is enabled and whether the stream’s duration or their device limits DVR.
  • A completed live stream is not visible to everyone: check the archive’s visibility settings; default archive upload does not mean public visibility.
  • An uploaded playlist is not appearing as a live source: player playlist repeat does not supply a Live broadcast. Confirm the encoder or production software is configured to send its output to YouTube.
