For general movie and TV searches, start with OpenSubtitles; try SubDL when you need a release-matched file, Addic7ed or TVsubtitles.net for television, and YIFY Subtitles or MovieSubtitles.org for movies. Podnapisi is a useful option for Slavic and other European languages. The right file must match your video’s release and cut: a subtitle for the same title can still be mistimed.
If you’re adding captions to a video you own on YouTube, use YouTube Studio rather than a subtitle-download site. Here are seven sources and a practical way to choose and use a subtitle file.
Which subtitle site should you try first?

These are different kinds of catalogs, not guarantees that a particular title or language is available. Subtitle databases depend on uploaded files, so a popular film or episode may have several choices—or none. For general searches, OpenSubtitles is a sensible first stop; narrow the choice by format, language and release details rather than assuming a site has the definitive file.
What each of the seven sites is good for
OpenSubtitles: the broad starting point
Use OpenSubtitles when you do not know which database is most likely to have a match. Its .com interface is the modern site, while .org is the legacy address; do not assume the two have identical features, access or terms. Interface rules, limits and pricing can change, so verify them on the site before relying on a particular allowance.

SubDL: match a particular release
SubDL describes itself as a free movie and TV subtitle database. Its stated workflow is to search a title, choose a language and download a file, usually an .srt; it says no account is needed to search or download. On its 2026-08-29 snapshot, SubDL reported 6,272,106 individual subtitle files, 459,609 movies and TV shows, and subtitles in 92 languages. Those are SubDL’s dated catalog figures, not live or permanent totals. See SubDL.
SubDL also lists desktop software that can match a local video filename and save a subtitle, an Android/Android TV player, a VLC extension, Bazarr integration and a Stremio add-on. It offers paid AI subtitle translation as well; availability and terms should be checked with SubDL. These integrations can reduce manual searching, but they do not make a file for a different cut or release a reliable match. See SubDL’s site and tools.
Addic7ed: TV releases and timing
For an episode, Addic7ed is a specialist option when release-group and synchronization details matter. Its listings are associated with HDTV, WEB-DL and BluRay releases. Compare the listed release with your video rather than selecting a subtitle based only on the series and episode title.

YIFY Subtitles: movies in a matching release
YIFY Subtitles is most useful when your movie file matches a YIFY/YTS-style release. It is focused on films, with broad language support, and is a weaker choice for TV episodes. A matching title alone does not establish that the subtitle fits another release or edition.

Try Podnapisi for Slavic languages such as Russian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Croatian, Serbian and Bulgarian, as well as other European languages. Its Slovenian roots are reflected in its regional-language strength. Check the subtitle’s language variant and release details before downloading.
TVsubtitles.net: episode-by-episode browsing
TVsubtitles.net organizes its TV-only archive by episode, which can help when browsing older shows as well as current-season entries. It is ad-supported, so take care to select the actual subtitle download rather than an unrelated page element.

MovieSubtitles.org: another place to check films
MovieSubtitles.org is a supplementary, movie-only search with a smaller catalog and a manual-upload emphasis. It is worth checking if the larger databases do not return a subtitle that fits your movie, but its narrower coverage makes it a less reliable first choice for broad searching.
How to choose a subtitle that actually syncs
Subtitle files are release-specific. Two files with the same movie or episode title may come from different edits, runtimes or releases, and a subtitle can drift if it was created for another cut. Compare these details before choosing:

- Edition and runtime: A theatrical cut, extended edition or different encode can have different scene timing.
- Resolution and frame rate: These clues can help distinguish releases; frame-rate differences in particular can contribute to progressive timing drift.
- Language: Confirm both the language and, where relevant, its regional variant.
If the dialogue begins in sync but gradually falls out, the subtitle may have been made for a different frame rate or cut. If it is consistently early or late, try a matching release first; otherwise adjust subtitle delay in your media player. How to add a downloaded subtitle file
.srt is the most common download format. .vtt and .ass are also used, especially in creator and advanced-player workflows. Many media players can pick up an SRT automatically if it sits beside the video and shares its base filename; otherwise, load it from the player’s subtitle menu.
- Download the subtitle that matches your video’s release and language. Check the file extension and ensure the download is an actual subtitle file.
- Place the subtitle file in the same folder as the video. For automatic pickup, give both files the same base name—for example,
FilmName.mkvandFilmName.srt. - Open the video in your media player. If captions do not appear automatically, open the player’s subtitle or captions menu and select the file.
- If the text is mistimed, first try a subtitle for the exact release or edition. Use the player’s subtitle-delay control for a small timing offset.
For VLC, use its subtitle menu to load an external subtitle file; the exact menu wording can vary by VLC version and platform. Automatic filename matching is also player-dependent.
Downloading subtitles for YouTube videos
For a video you own or manage, add captions in YouTube Studio. YouTube Help says subtitle and caption files contain spoken text and timestamps for when each line should appear. Studio supports uploading a timed or untimed caption file, auto-syncing a transcript, typing captions manually and automatic captions when available. Captions can help deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers and viewers who speak another language. See YouTube Help: Add subtitles and captions.

Third-party subtitle-download sites are not the right default for creator captions. Use YouTube’s own tools for your channel’s video; subtitle downloads are mainly relevant when working with a locally held video you own or are entitled to use.
Is Subscene still a dependable option?
Do not rely on older lists that present Subscene as a current, dependable source. OpenSubtitles’ explainer reports that Subscene’s own website states that it is closed. Check a current subtitle database instead. See OpenSubtitles’ explainer.
