For a free subtitle file, start with SubDL for movies and TV, or OpenSubtitles.com if you can search by a release name or file hash. Other options include Addic7ed, TVsubtitles.net and Moviesubtitles.org. These are subtitle catalogues, not places to download the movie itself. Check the title, language and video release before downloading: a subtitle in the right language can still be out of sync with a different cut or encode.
Five subtitle sites to try
These services have different catalogue emphases and search details. Their inclusion is not a ranking of subtitle accuracy or safety; those qualities are not established by the services’ catalogue descriptions alone.
1. SubDL: movies and TV, with downloads that do not require an account
SubDL says visitors can search and download without signing in. Its subtitle files are usually SRT files timed for a particular video release, so compare the release label with your own video rather than choosing by language alone. SubDL hosts subtitle text files only, not video.
A database snapshot dated August 29, 2026, reported 6,272,106 subtitle files across 459,609 movie and TV titles, with downloadable subtitles in 92 languages and catalogue support for 111 languages. These are catalogue-wide figures, not a promise that any particular title is available in every language. Check the title page for the language you need. SubDL About

2. OpenSubtitles.com: useful search by release, IMDb ID or file hash
OpenSubtitles.com supports searches by title, release name, IMDb ID or file hash. If a basic title search returns several versions, a release-name or hash search can help narrow the match. Its Help Center describes a free-account allowance of up to 20 subtitle downloads per day; account limits and tiers can change, so check the current service terms before relying on that quota. OpenSubtitles says it does not offer video or audio files. A subtitle download is separate from access to the film. OpenSubtitles Terms of Service

3. Addic7ed: a TV-oriented option that also lists movies
Addic7ed describes itself as a free subtitle site for TV shows and movies. Its visible catalogue includes current episode and multilingual entries, making it a reasonable place to look for episodic subtitles as well as film subtitles. For a series, verify the episode and release information, not just the show title.
4. TVsubtitles.net: organized around shows and episodes
TVsubtitles.net is focused on TV series. Its catalogue and submission pages are organized by show, season, episode, language and release. That structure is useful when the subtitle search is for a specific episode rather than a movie.

5. Moviesubtitles.org: a movie-focused catalogue
Moviesubtitles.org presents movie subtitles with language, release and date details. Its indexed page showed 106,022 subtitles in a 2026 snapshot; that count can change and says nothing by itself about whether a particular file is accurate or well timed.

How to find a subtitle that matches your video
- Search the exact title and year. Films with similar titles or remakes can have separate entries. For TV, search the series and identify the season and episode.
- Choose the subtitle language. Availability varies by title; a service’s overall language count does not establish that a specific film has subtitles in your language.
- Compare the release label. Look for a release name that matches the video file or edition you have. A subtitle timed for another encode, cut or release may drift even when its language is correct.
- Use a more specific search when possible. OpenSubtitles supports release-name and file-hash searches; TVsubtitles.net exposes episode and release fields; SubDL says its files are timed to particular video releases.
- Check the file and timing after download. Preview it with the video. If timing is consistently early or late, the subtitle may target a different release. Do not assume that a catalogue listing guarantees accuracy, synchronization, legality for your use or file security.
What to know before downloading
- A subtitle site is not a movie source. SubDL says it hosts subtitle text files only, and OpenSubtitles says it does not provide video or audio files.
- Account rules differ. SubDL says search and download are available without an account; OpenSubtitles Help Center describes a free-account daily limit. Check current terms because policies can change.
- User-submitted files can vary. SubDL’s terms disclaim guarantees that files are accurate, complete, synchronized, lawful for your use, secure or error-free. OpenSubtitles also says it does not guarantee that files work or are virus-free. Treat those as service-specific statements, not proof that a particular file is safe or unsafe.
- Use subtitles only in an appropriate context. SubDL’s terms prohibit links intended to access unauthorized copies and say subtitle files may themselves be protected by copyright or other laws; the terms put responsibility for use on the user. OpenSubtitles says it believes it distributes files it is free to redistribute. These service statements are not a determination of what is lawful in every location or circumstance.
