What HakuNeko does
HakuNeko is a cross-platform downloader that retrieves manga and anime from supported websites for offline use. Its stated purpose is ad-hoc downloading for upcoming reading or viewing, rather than building a large archive by downloading thousands of chapters.
It is not a general-purpose downloader for any URL: each source website needs a compatible connector, and the link workflow works with supported title pages.
How to install HakuNeko
The official setup documentation directs users to the GitHub Releases page for the latest desktop client. Follow the instructions for your operating system:

Windows
- Download the portable ZIP archive from the Releases page.
- Extract it to a folder where your current Windows user has permission to read and write files.
- Run
hakuneko-app.exefrom the extracted folder.
The setup documentation warns that antivirus software, including Windows Defender, may remove the executable. If the file disappears, check your security software’s quarantine or protection history before attempting to launch it.
macOS
- Download the DMG that matches your Mac’s architecture from the Releases page.
- Open the DMG and copy
HakuNeko.appinto Applications. - If macOS reports that the app is damaged or lacks executable permission, follow the documented
xattrorchmodinstructions on the official setup page.
Use commands only as documented for your downloaded app and macOS warning; the setup instructions describe different remedies for different issues.

Linux
The official setup page currently marks Linux installation as “not yet provided.” It does not provide a complete end-user installation procedure, so a reliable Linux setup cannot be specified from the published instructions.
How to paste a MangaDex title into HakuNeko
The URL-paste workflow accepts supported website and title-page links. A chapter URL or an individual anime episode URL is not valid for this method.

- Open a title page on a supported site in your browser. The official tutorial uses MangaDex as its example.
- Copy the title page’s URL, not a chapter or episode link.
- Switch to HakuNeko and press Paste in the Title Selection Panel.
- Wait for the title and media-item panels to load, then select the items you want to download.
HakuNeko also documents a browser extension called HakuNeko Assistant, which can control a running app through the Remote Control setting. The documentation recommends changing the default RPC secret before allowing third-party applications to connect.
What websites does HakuNeko support?
Support depends on website-specific connectors, rather than a universal ability to download from any site. HakuNeko’s developer guide describes connectors built on DecoratableMangaScraper. URL validation determines whether a title link is recognized; connector decorators can then handle tasks such as opening an HTML page, finding an image element and extracting its source.

The official material does not establish a stable current count of supported websites. A site’s presence or absence may also change as its pages and connector support change, so check the current application for the source you need rather than relying on an uncited site total.

The desktop client hosts HakuNeko’s web application and provides access to local files and input/output. When the web application has been updated, the client downloads it and serves it from a local cache directory. The developer manual describes the web application as receiving rolling updates, so its update model is distinct from simply replacing the desktop launcher for every change.

Is HakuNeko still updated?
The official developer manual describes regular rolling updates to the web application, and the setup documentation points users to GitHub Releases for the desktop client. These sources document an update mechanism and release route, but they do not establish a release schedule or guarantee a specific update date. Check the Releases page for the latest published desktop version.
For developers: how website support is added
The official “Add Website” guide explains how to extend support with a scraper connector. It directs developers to use HakuNeko’s FetchProvider methods for requests and documents patterns for extracting title and image data. This is developer guidance, not an end-user installation method.
Do not confuse the successor HaruNeko project’s development setup—which lists Git and NodeJS 22 with NPM 10 and describes web and NW.js workspaces—with the steps for installing HakuNeko as a user.
