Netflix’s Downloads For You automatically saves recommended movies and shows to a supported phone or tablet for offline viewing. It does not automatically download titles in My List or every episode of a favorite series. For those jobs, use a manual download or Netflix’s separate Download Next Episode feature.
Before you start
- Device: An Android phone or tablet, iPhone, or iPad running the latest Netflix app. Netflix does not confirm Downloads For You for every device that supports ordinary downloads.
- Plan: Downloads For You is unavailable on Netflix’s ad-supported plans.
- Connection: Automatic downloads use Wi‑Fi, not cellular data.
- Storage: Your device needs free space in addition to the storage allowance you assign to Netflix.
For current iPhone and iPad app requirements, Netflix identifies iOS/iPadOS 18 or later for its latest app; general Netflix downloading has broader iOS/iPadOS requirements listed separately. Check Netflix’s iPhone and iPad requirements before troubleshooting an older device.
What Downloads For You actually downloads
Netflix uses the recommendations for the currently selected profile to choose movies and shows. The files are stored on that device, so enabling the feature does not place a shared set of downloads on your Netflix account or on other household devices.
Netflix does not provide a title whitelist for this feature. A show in My List, a favorite movie, or a particular season may not be selected. If precise control matters, choose one of the alternatives below.

How to turn on Downloads For You
- Open the Netflix app on your Android phone, Android tablet, iPhone, or iPad.
- Tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the active profile name at the top.
- Choose App Settings.
- Under Downloads, tap Smart Downloads.
- Turn on Downloads For You.
- Use the plus and minus controls to set how much device storage Netflix may use for that profile.
Netflix can adjust labels by language, platform, or app version. The landmarks to look for are My Netflix, App Settings, Downloads, and Smart Downloads. The official route is documented at Netflix Help Center.
Choosing the storage allowance
The gigabyte control is a per-profile allowance for the automatic-download feature. Increasing it gives Netflix room to keep more recommended titles; decreasing it limits the feature’s footprint. It does not add capacity to your phone or tablet.

If storage is tight, lower the allowance and remove existing downloads you no longer need. Changing the allowance alone does not recover space already occupied by downloaded files. Your operating system must also report enough free storage for Netflix to create new downloads.
How downloads appear—and why they may take time
Downloads For You needs Wi‑Fi, available device storage, and content Netflix can select for the profile. Netflix does not promise that a file will appear immediately after you enable the switch. Battery-saving settings, background-app restrictions, an interrupted connection, or normal operating-system behavior can affect when the app completes a download.

Do not enable cellular downloading as a fix: Netflix describes Downloads For You as a Wi‑Fi feature. You can review broader download and mobile-data controls in Netflix’s data and download settings.
How to download a specific favorite show

- Open Netflix on a supported download device and find the movie or series.
- Tap the download icon beside a movie or episode.
- For a supported series, use Download Season when that option is shown, or select individual episodes.
- Open the Downloads section in the app to watch without an internet connection.
Not every title is downloadable. If the icon is missing, licensing or device restrictions may prevent offline viewing. See Netflix’s download instructions for the current title and device rules.

For one specific series, Download Next Episode is the better match than Downloads For You. It follows a series you choose rather than selecting unrelated recommendations.

- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap App Settings.
- Under Downloads, tap Smart Downloads.
- Turn on Download Next Episode.
After you watch a downloaded episode, Netflix deletes that episode and downloads the next one when available. The final episode is not automatically deleted after viewing. The feature is available on Android phones and tablets, iPhone, and iPad with the latest app, and is unavailable on ad-supported plans. Details are in Netflix’s Download Next Episode guide.
Why Netflix is not downloading anything
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the switch: Return to My Netflix > profile name > App Settings > Smart Downloads and verify Downloads For You is on.
- Check Wi‑Fi: Automatic downloads require a Wi‑Fi connection.
- Check free space: Look at device storage, not only Netflix’s allocation. Delete old downloads if necessary.
- Check the plan: The feature is not offered on ad-supported plans.
- Update Netflix: Install the latest app available for your operating system.
- Check compatibility: The officially listed platforms are Android phones/tablets, iPhone, and iPad. Some Android hardware may be incompatible with downloads.
- Allow the app to operate normally: Battery or background restrictions can delay practical completion even when Netflix’s requirements are met.

What if a download expires?
Netflix downloads are temporary offline licenses, not permanent copies. A title can expire after a period of time, and a program that has left Netflix may not be renewable. Reconnect to Netflix, remove the expired file, and try downloading it again if the title is still available. Netflix explains expiration and re-download limits at its expired-downloads page.
Does it work on Windows, TVs, or streaming devices?
Netflix says downloads are unavailable in its Windows app. Downloads For You is designed for supported mobile download devices, not smart TVs, game consoles, or streaming sticks. General Netflix downloads may work on some Amazon Fire tablets and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store, but Netflix does not establish that Downloads For You itself is supported on those platforms. Do not treat general download support as confirmation for this specific feature.
