Choose the profile you actually use, then change the setting that matches what you want to fix; language options can still vary by title, location, and device.
Choose the language setting you need
| If you want to change | Change this setting |
|---|---|
| Netflix menus, buttons, and other interface text | Display Language |
| Spoken dialogue | Audio |
| Translated text or captions | Subtitles |
| Subtitle font, size, shadow, or background | Subtitle appearance |
These are distinct controls. Changing the display language does not automatically change a show’s audio or subtitles. Netflix language preferences are tied to individual profiles, so confirm that you are editing the profile you use to watch. Menu labels can vary with your device, app version, region, and current interface language. Netflix’s language-setting instructions and its profile guidance describe the available controls.
Change Netflix’s display language
In a web browser
- Open Netflix and go to the Account page.
- Under Profiles, select the profile to edit.
- Select Languages.
- Under Display Language, choose a language.
- Select Save.
If the interface does not update on another device, sign out of Netflix there and sign back in.
In the Android, iPhone, or iPad app
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top, then tap Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to edit.
- Tap Display Language and choose a language. The change saves automatically.
On a smart TV or streaming device
- Open Netflix and go to the profile-selection screen.
- Highlight the profile, then select the pencil-shaped Edit icon.
- Select Language, choose the language, and select Done.
Set preferred audio and subtitle languages
These profile preferences can help Netflix select your preferred tracks when a title offers them. They do not add tracks that are unavailable for a particular show or movie.

Change subtitle appearance
Appearance settings affect how subtitles look, not which language they use.
In a web browser
- Open the Netflix Account page.
- Under Profiles, select a profile.
- Select Subtitle appearance.
- Adjust the font, size, shadow, or background color, then select Save.
- Reopen Netflix on the device where you watch.
On Android or a TV
Android users can change subtitle appearance in the Netflix app; those app changes apply to titles played on that Android device. Some TVs offer subtitle size and style during playback through Settings, but the option is not available on every device or for every language. Netflix’s subtitle appearance instructions explain the platform differences.

Why a language may be missing
A missing option does not necessarily mean your account setting is wrong. Netflix says audio and subtitle availability can depend on the title, location, licensing, profile preferences, device, and whether the title is downloaded. A season or individual episode can have different tracks from another. A language track may also be incomplete for a title released on a rolling or weekly schedule. Netflix’s availability guidance lists these factors.
- Check another episode or title. If the language is offered elsewhere but not for this episode, the track may not be available for that specific content.
- Check your profile preferences. Add the language under the profile’s audio and subtitle settings, then reopen the player.
- Consider the device. A language available on one device may not be supported on another. Netflix notes that some older devices may lack support for certain languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian, and Vietnamese. Netflix cites 2014 only as a general guide—not a definitive compatibility cutoff.
- Check downloads. Netflix displays the two most relevant languages for downloads. Delete the download and try selecting the language again; when watching a downloaded title over Wi-Fi, only two relevant languages may still appear.
To look for titles with a particular track, use Netflix’s audio-language browsing page or subtitle-language browsing page. Results remain subject to your location and each title’s availability.

Language settings and Kids profiles
Netflix says audio and subtitle preferences generally are not saved when most Kids titles are watched from an adult profile. Preferences are saved when watching from a Kids profile. If audio keeps resetting in a Kids-related setup, Netflix recommends playing a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes to establish the preferred audio language.
Some older smart TVs and Blu-ray players may not support subtitles or alternate audio on Kids profiles. Netflix recommends switching to another profile and trying again; see its Kids-profile troubleshooting guidance.

Troubleshoot a language setting that does not work
| What you see | What to try |
|---|---|
| Netflix menus remain in the old language | Confirm you edited the profile in use. Close and reopen Netflix; if the change still does not appear, sign out and sign back in. |
| The menus changed, but a show’s audio did not | Open the player’s audio and subtitle controls and choose an available audio track. Display Language does not guarantee matching audio. |
| Your preferred language is not listed | Test another title or episode, check the audio or subtitle browsing page, and consider location, licensing, profile, device, or download limits. |
| A subtitle option appears on one device but not another | Check whether the second device supports that language, then test the title on another device if available. |
| The audio preference keeps resetting | Verify the profile. If the issue involves Kids titles, follow Netflix’s Teens-or-above playback recommendation. |
| A downloaded title shows only two languages | Delete the download and try again; Netflix limits downloaded titles to the two most relevant language options. |
| You cannot find the audio and subtitle controls | Open the playback controls; on TVs try the remote’s up or down arrow, and on Apple TV swipe up or press up. Look for Other if Audio & Subtitles is absent. |
| Audio or subtitles are missing on a Kids profile | Try another profile. Some older smart TVs and Blu-ray players have limitations with Kids profiles. |
