Pixel Arena was an immersive 3D fan environment built into the NBA app for the 2022 NBA Playoffs. During halftime or between games, fans could enter a virtual arena, create an avatar, view game-data visualizations, answer trivia and unlock digital accessories. Google’s launch description said it worked on any device or operating system, so owning a Google Pixel phone was not required. Official material later described a 2023 upgrade, but it does not confirm that Pixel Arena is still available today.
What Pixel Arena was at launch
The NBA announced Pixel Arena on April 16, 2022, as a virtual 3D environment inside the NBA app. The initial rollout was designed around halftime during the 2022 Playoffs, with additional access between games.

The space combined live basketball information with game-like activities:
- Custom avatars: Fans created a digital character and could earn accessories by collecting points.
- Virtual jumbotron: A central screen presented matchups and scores.
- 3D court visualizations: Shot charts and other views represented what happened on the court.
- Trivia: Questions drew on basketball history and events from the first half of a live game.
Google described the concept as “a virtual space based on live in-game action where you can create, play, share and celebrate your 2022 NBA Playoffs skills.”

How the NBA app experience worked
Entering and looking around
Google said fans could select a game, including a past game, and use a phone’s gyroscope to look around the environment. That made the handset a motion-controlled window into the 3D space rather than a special controller.
Game-data recaps
Pixel Arena turned NBA data into three-dimensional shot recaps. Shots by individual players were mapped onto a virtual court, allowing fans to review where attempts occurred in relation to the basket and the rest of the floor.

Trivia and other activities supplied points that could be exchanged for virtual avatar accessories. The cited launch descriptions do not establish a physical collectible, printed guide or required purchase.
Did you need a Google Pixel phone?
No. Google explicitly said Pixel Arena was available regardless of device or operating system. The name reflected the Google Pixel sponsorship and branding, not a hardware requirement. A compatible way to run the NBA app was the stated access path; the launch material did not require a Pixel handset or a separate physical accessory.

What changed in the 2023 update
In a March 27, 2023 update, Google described a broader version of Pixel Arena. The dated instructions directed users to the NBA app’s Discover tab and required an NBA ID login.

Highlight (Re)Mixer
The update introduced Highlight (Re)Mixer, which used 3D-pose estimation on captured video and rendering technology so fans could reenact selected plays. This was an added feature of the 2023 version, not a capability established for the original launch.

Is Pixel Arena still available?
The cited official descriptions do not establish its current status. The latest feature information identified for this experience is dated March 2023, and those instructions should not be treated as proof that the same destination, login flow or feature set remains live in the NBA app today.
Accordingly, present-day availability, supported devices, account requirements and the continuing scope of the Google-NBA partnership remain unresolved from the published material. Pixel Arena should be described as a 2022 Playoffs-era NBA app experience, with a documented 2023 update, rather than as a currently guaranteed feature.

Why Google and the NBA created it
The experience came from a multiyear partnership announced in October 2021. That agreement named Google Pixel the Official Fan Phone of the NBA, NBA G League and NBA 2K League, and the first presenting partner of the NBA Playoffs. It also called for fan experiences using Google’s 3D and augmented-reality technology.
Pixel Arena was therefore both a branded sponsorship activation and an interactive way to extend live-game data into the NBA app. The partnership context explains the Pixel name, while the access statement explains why the experience was not limited to Pixel-phone owners.
