You can set up YouTube supervision from the parent’s YouTube app, the child’s device, families.youtube.com, or Google Family Link. For a child under 13 (or the applicable age in your country or region), choose one of YouTube’s three content levels—Older kids, Teens, or Older teens—then manage channels, history, and privacy settings through Family Center or Family Link. Teen supervision is a separate, consent-based process that links an existing teen account to a parent.
Before you start
- For a supervised kid account, the child must be under 13, or under the relevant age for their country or region.
- Decide whether to use a shared-device profile or link the child’s own Google Account. The shared-device route does not require creating a Google Account for the child, but it does not include YouTube Music. YouTube Music requires the linked Google Account route.
- If you are adding supervision to an existing under-age account, read the data warning below before confirming.
Choose the right YouTube experience

Set up a supervised kid account
Option 1: Use the parent’s YouTube app on a shared device
- Sign in to YouTube with the parent’s Google Account.
- Open Settings → Family Center.
- Select add a kid account and follow the prompts.
- To change profiles later, use Who’s Watching or Switch account in the You tab.
This route creates a supervised profile without requiring a Google Account for the child. It does not provide YouTube Music access.
Option 2: Start on the child’s device
- Create a Google Account for the child and link it to the parent’s account.
- On the child’s device, open YouTube or YouTube Music.
- Select GET STARTED and follow the setup prompts.
- Enter the parent’s Google Account password if YouTube asks for authorization.
Use this route when the child needs an individual account and YouTube Music as well as YouTube.
Option 3: Use the web
- Go to families.youtube.com and sign in as the family-group manager.
- Select the child from the family group.
- Follow the on-screen steps to create or configure the supervised experience and choose a content level.
Option 4: Use Family Link
- Open the Family Link app.
- Select the child.
- Choose Controls → YouTube, or YouTube and YouTube Music where that label appears.
- Follow the instructions to complete setup and select the content level.

Google provides three supervised-account settings: Older kids, Teens, and Older teens. During setup, preview what each setting allows before choosing one. You can change the selection later in Family Center or Family Link.

Manage the account after setup
Open Family Center or Family Link to adjust the supervised experience. Available controls include:
- Changing the content level.
- Blocking specific channels.
- Pausing watch history.
- Pausing search history.
- Managing related privacy and general settings.
Read this data-loss warning before supervising an existing account
When supervision is added to an existing under-age account, Google says the account’s subscriptions and some content may be deleted. The affected material can include YouTube videos, chats, comments, live chats, posts, playlists, stories, and purchased or rented YouTube videos.

Have the child download their data before turning supervision on. Treat this as a one-time migration decision: do not proceed until any videos, playlists, comments, purchases, or other material the child wants to keep has been saved.
Where supervised YouTube works
The supervised experience is available through the YouTube app and website, the YouTube Music app and website, eligible smart TVs, Google Assistant-enabled devices, Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Device and country eligibility can vary, so a profile that works on one device or in one country may not be available identically everywhere.

Set up supervision for a teenager
Teen supervision uses a different flow from a supervised kid account. The teen keeps their own Google Account, and the parent and teen connect their accounts through Family Center.
- In Family Center, either the parent chooses Invite a teen or the teen chooses Invite a parent.
- The person starting the process creates an invitation.
- The other person scans the displayed QR code or opens the shared link.
- Both people review and agree to the arrangement.
- Supervision turns on only after both have agreed.
Either the parent or the teen can turn teen supervision off later.

Which setup should your family use?
- Use YouTube Kids when you want a separate child-focused app rather than regular YouTube.
- Use a shared-device supervised kid profile when the child does not need an individual Google Account or YouTube Music.
- Link a child’s Google Account when the child needs YouTube Music or a personal sign-in across devices.
- Use teen supervision when the young person already has their own Google Account and both of you want a linked, consent-based arrangement.
