It may work for some titles, but it is not guaranteed or officially supported as a way to obtain the complete American catalog. Netflix can detect VPN and proxy traffic, restrict you to titles with worldwide rights, or show an error. Netflix also says VPNs are not supported on its ad-supported experience.
This guide explains the practical setup, device options, account and travel rules, troubleshooting steps, and alternatives when a VPN is not worth the cost.
What “American Netflix” means
“American Netflix” is not a separate app or a special profile. It generally means the catalog Netflix associates with a U.S. internet connection. Netflix licenses programs by country, so the titles, audio, subtitles, downloads, pricing, payment methods and maturity settings available to the same account can differ by location. A U.S. billing address, U.S. email address, profile language or English-language interface does not switch a Japanese connection to the U.S. catalog. A VPN changes the apparent network location; it does not change the underlying licensing rights or permanently change the account country.

Can you watch U.S. Netflix from Japan?
Sometimes. A VPN can route your connection through a U.S. server, and some viewers may then find U.S.-licensed titles. Netflix says, however, that VPN users may see only programs for which it has worldwide rights rather than the complete catalog for the VPN country. Netflix has also described its continuing proxy and unblocker detection work in its proxy-detection announcement.
Results can change by title, server IP address, device, plan, DNS configuration and date. A provider’s statement that it supports Netflix is a current marketing claim, not a permanent guarantee.
What you need
- An active Netflix membership.
- A paid VPN service with U.S. server locations. Free VPNs commonly impose limits on data, speed, servers, privacy or streaming access and are a poor fit for this use.
- A compatible device: Windows or Mac, Android or iPhone/iPad, Android TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, another supported streaming player, game console or smart TV.
- A reasonably stable internet connection.
- A Netflix plan whose rules permit your intended connection. Netflix specifically says VPNs are not supported on its ad-supported experience.
Netflix lists browsers, smart TVs, phones, tablets, streaming players and game consoles among supported ways to use the service on its Japan membership page. Device support for a VPN is a separate question from Netflix accepting VPN traffic.
How to try watching American Netflix on a computer or phone
- Choose a reputable VPN and check that it has an app for your device.
- Install the provider’s official application and sign in.
- Select a server in the United States and wait for the app to report an active connection.
- Open Netflix in a browser, or fully close and reopen the Netflix app.
- Sign in to your existing Netflix account.
- Search directly for the movie or series you want.
- If it is missing, try another U.S. server. Do not assume that changing cities will always work; individual IP addresses can be blocked or reclassified.
- Disconnect the VPN when finished if Japanese websites, banking services or other local apps behave unexpectedly.
Watching on a smart TV or streaming player
Native VPN application
Some Android TV and Fire TV devices support VPN apps directly. Install the provider’s official app, connect to a U.S. server, then restart Netflix. App availability depends on the device, operating system and provider.

Router-based VPN
A compatible router can send traffic from TVs and other devices through the U.S. connection. This is useful when the television cannot run a VPN app, but it affects the whole home network and makes DNS and troubleshooting more complicated.
Apple TV and other devices without a VPN app
You may need a VPN-enabled router or a supported streaming setup. A browser VPN extension normally protects only browser traffic; it does not automatically protect a separate TV or Netflix app.
Computer or mobile sharing
Internet sharing or a mobile hotspot can sometimes pass a VPN connection to another device, but operating-system support and routing behavior vary. Treat this as a technical fallback rather than a reliable universal method.

Check the network country with Fast.com
- Connect the device to the network you use for Netflix.
- Visit
fast.comand wait for the test to finish. - Select Show more info.
- Look at the country beside Client.
If the country does not match your physical location, a VPN or other location-changing service may still be active. This test checks network location; it does not prove that a particular VPN will unlock a particular title. Netflix documents this check on its VPN help page.

Eliminate hidden VPN and DNS conflicts
- Disable every other VPN, proxy, Smart DNS service and router-level VPN.
- Check antivirus software: some products include an automatically enabled VPN.
- If Netflix requests it, restore the network’s normal ISP DNS settings rather than forcing a custom DNS service.
- Clear browser cookies and site data when using a browser.
- Restart the device and router, then test through a different network if possible.
- Contact the VPN provider if all of its U.S. servers fail; do not assume repeated switching will overcome a Netflix block.
Ad-supported Netflix: an important restriction
Netflix says VPNs are not supported on its ad-supported experience. If you see the VPN/proxy message while using that plan, first test Netflix with the VPN disconnected. An ad-free plan may remove the ad-supported restriction, but it does not guarantee that Netflix will accept VPN traffic or provide the full U.S. catalog. Check the current plan terms before buying a VPN subscription.

If you want only one movie, checking a legal Japanese rental or purchase service can be more economical than committing to a long VPN subscription.
Choosing a VPN for this use case
- Streaming compatibility: Look for current support information and responsive help, but treat every claim as changeable.
- U.S. server choice: More locations make it easier to change IP addresses when one is blocked; server count is not proof of Netflix access.
- Device and router support: Confirm native apps for your TV or streaming player, or router compatibility if no app exists.
- Simultaneous connections: Useful for households using several phones, computers and TVs.
- Refund policy: A refund period lets you test compatibility before committing long term.
- Privacy: Review logging disclosures, independent audits, ownership and jurisdiction. Streaming compatibility is not the same as strong privacy protection.
- Renewal pricing: Compare the introductory term, renewal amount, billing frequency, taxes and cancellation conditions.

Traveling versus permanently moving to Japan
Temporary travel
A U.S. subscriber can generally continue using Netflix while traveling, but the available catalog and other features may reflect the country where the viewer is located. Travel is not a normal permanent country switch.

Permanent move
Netflix says that someone who has moved countries should cancel the membership, wait until it ends, and restart while physically present in the new country. Can I use my existing Japanese Netflix account?
Potentially. A VPN does not by itself require a new account, but it also does not guarantee a complete U.S. catalog. Netflix still evaluates the connection, plan, device and title rights.
Do I need a U.S. Netflix subscription?

Does changing Netflix’s language change the catalog?
