Film breakthrough
Her major film period included Bound for Glory (1976), Slap Shot (1977) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). She later earned a second supporting-actress Oscar nomination for Absence of Malice (1981).
Later screen work
Dillon continued working across film and television. Her later credits included Harry and the Hendersons, The Prince of Tides, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, How to Make an American Quilt and Magnolia. She also appeared in the television series Heartland; the Television Academy lists a 2007 episode as her final acting credit.
What has been reported about her death
The Washington Post reported that Dillon’s family announced her death without giving a cause or location. The Chicago Sun-Times identified Los Angeles as the location and likewise reported that no cause was disclosed. There is no reliable public information establishing how she died, so claims about a specific illness or circumstance are unsupported.
How colleagues remembered her
In an Academy remembrance, Spielberg said: “Melinda was generous of spirit and lent such kindness to the character she played in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” The comment reflects the contrast between her two best-known screen roles: the intimate family comedy of A Christmas Story and the emotionally intense search at the center of Close Encounters.

Why audiences still remember Mother Parker
A Christmas Story made Dillon’s performance part of the annual holiday movie tradition. Mother Parker is neither a broad caricature nor a passive observer: she manages the household, mediates between her children and their father, and reacts to Ralphie’s single-minded campaign for a Red Ryder BB gun. That combination of affection, fatigue and comic timing is why the role remains Dillon’s most recognizable to general audiences, even though her filmography also includes two Oscar-nominated performances.
