Amazon is using live sports as a Prime customer-acquisition and advertising platform, not as a standalone sports-subscription business. Exclusive and hard-to-find games can make Prime more valuable, deliver scarce live-TV advertising inventory, and connect viewing exposure with Amazon’s retail measurement. The advertising case is already producing visible results; the number of Prime memberships caused by sports, and the profitability of individual rights packages, remain undisclosed.
The strategy: sports inside a larger Prime flywheel
Amazon’s model links several businesses rather than asking ticket-like subscription revenue to cover every rights fee:
Sports rights → live viewers → Prime engagement → advertising inventory → advertiser spending → commerce measurement → stronger economics for more rights.
A sports fan might join Prime for a particular game, but Amazon can also benefit if that customer stays for delivery, shopping, scripted video, music, reading, devices or other benefits. Existing members who watch games create value too, even when no new subscription is sold.

Amazon reports Prime fees and digital-content subscriptions together, so it does not disclose how many memberships were acquired or retained because of sports. The membership thesis is therefore strategic and plausible, not a publicly measured sports-specific result (Amazon 2025 Form 10-K).
What Amazon carries—and where
Availability, exclusivity and subscription requirements vary by country and season. A U.S. Prime member should not assume that a property Amazon shows internationally is available domestically.
| Property | Amazon’s role | Timing or geography | Why it matters commercially |
|---|---|---|---|
| NFL Thursday Night Football | U.S. rights package, including regular-season games | Weekly NFL season | Reliable appointment viewing and premium national inventory |
| NFL Black Friday game | Special-event NFL rights | United States | Holiday audience alongside Amazon’s retail calendar |
| NFL Wild Card game | U.S. postseason game | Seasonal | Large, high-stakes audience |
| NBA | Regular-season coverage | Beginning with 2025–26 season; schedules vary by market | Extends inventory beyond the NFL calendar |
| WNBA | Games and a global distribution role for WNBA League Pass through Prime Video Channels | Market-dependent | Additional recurring inventory and international reach |
| NASCAR, NWSL, college basketball and other events | Selected programming | Rights and seasons vary | Fills the sports calendar and broadens advertiser categories |
| UEFA Champions League, Premier League, tennis and other properties | Selected or extended international rights | Country-specific | Shows why Amazon’s global sports offer cannot be summarized by the U.S. lineup |
Amazon’s live-sports guide lists current programming. Its U.S. NFL package is described in the company’s Thursday Night Football announcement.
Why the NBA deal changes the equation
NFL games give Amazon a powerful autumn anchor. NBA rights beginning with the 2025–26 season add Friday games, selected Saturday games and Thursday doubleheaders after the NFL season, alongside WNBA rights (Amazon’s NBA and WNBA announcement).

That creates a longer, more repeatable sports calendar, more opportunities to sell basketball campaigns and a product that can travel internationally. Amazon said NBA on Prime debuted in more than 200 countries and territories. That is a distribution figure, not a claim that every market receives the same games or rights.
The advertising prize may be larger than the membership prize
Amazon reported $19.8 billion in advertising revenue in the second quarter of 2026, up 26% year over year. The company attributed part of that growth to Prime Video and multi-sport streaming, and said inventory around Thursday Night Football, the NBA, WNBA and NASCAR had sold out (Amazon’s Q2 2026 advertising update).
Sports are unusually valuable to an advertiser because they combine:
- scheduled appointment viewing rather than on-demand convenience;
- large simultaneous audiences and scarce commercial slots;
- high repeat frequency from weekly or seasonal games;
- strong cultural relevance and national reach; and
- the possibility of connecting video exposure with shopping outcomes.
Amazon Ads reported that the 2025 Thursday Night Football season averaged 15.3 million viewers and that its NFL Wild Card game reached 31.6 million average-minute viewers. These are Amazon-reported measurements, not independent audits, and the metrics are not interchangeable with total reach or a unique-viewer count (Amazon Ads live-sports overview).

The company can sell sports video alongside sponsored products, display and connected-TV campaigns. It says audiences exposed to its sports programming can be compared with average Amazon shoppers. That positioning makes live sports part of a full-funnel retail-media system; claims about campaign effectiveness should be understood as Amazon’s claims unless independently validated.
Prime membership: a compelling theory, incomplete public proof
Sports can support both acquisition and retention. A consumer may join for one exclusive game, while habitual weekly viewing can reduce the chance of cancelling. Sports can also make Prime Video feel like an essential benefit instead of an occasional entertainment library.
But audience size does not equal new memberships. Many viewers are already Prime customers, and Amazon does not publish sports-attributed signups, churn reduction or a sports-only subscription profit figure. The defensible conclusion is that Amazon is using sports to improve Prime’s value proposition—not that a disclosed number of memberships resulted from the rights.
How Prime Video’s advertising model affects viewers
Amazon began adding ads to ordinary U.S. Prime Video programming in January 2024; live events such as sports already carried advertising (Amazon’s Prime Video advertising announcement). Prime members can pay for a higher tier, but that does not make sports universally commercial-free.

A rights package carries more than its headline fee. Amazon must account for:
- rights payments and renewal escalations;
- production, studios, talent and distribution;
- technology, customer support and marketing;
- ad-sales and measurement operations;
- Prime retention and acquisition value;
- video advertising revenue; and
- retail sales or new-to-brand customers influenced by campaigns.
Rights costs are recognized over time, and Amazon’s filings discuss timing effects from renewals, including changes in NBA and college-sports costs between quarters (Amazon Q2 2026 financial filing). A package can be strategically worthwhile while losing money as a standalone video product; conversely, a large audience does not prove profitability.

Amazon’s projected approximately $200 billion of 2026 capital expenditure is company-wide, not a sports budget (Amazon 2025 annual results).

The customer trade-off: convenience versus fragmentation
Prime Video Channels can consolidate billing and viewing for services such as NBA League Pass and other sports packages, but multiple add-ons can cost more than choosing only the leagues a fan follows. Rights are fragmented by territory, season and platform, so Prime does not guarantee every sport shown in another country or every game in a league.
Ad-free also has a precise limitation: paying for Ultra does not necessarily remove commercials from live sports. Some special events may have different access rules, including circumstances in which a game is available without a full Prime subscription; viewers should check the listing for the particular event.
Amazon’s competitive advantage—and its weak spots
| Competitor | Strength Amazon must confront | Amazon’s distinct position |
|---|---|---|
| Disney/ESPN | Deep league relationships, production expertise and sports analysis | Retail marketplace and commerce measurement |
| NBCUniversal, CBS/Paramount and Fox | Broadcast reach, local stations and established national sports portfolios | Streaming-first distribution and Prime bundling |
| Warner Bros. Discovery | Sports networks and existing rights infrastructure | Broader advertising and retail ecosystem |
| YouTube/Google | Massive reach and products such as Sunday Ticket | First-party shopping signals tied to a marketplace |
| Apple | Premium device ecosystem and selective rights spending | Scale of Prime, retail and advertising |
| Netflix | Huge entertainment audience and growing live-event ambition | More mature retail-media integration |
Amazon’s weakness is the inverse of its advantage: it lacks the decades-long sports-production culture, local-station footprint and linear distribution of incumbent broadcasters. Live technical or editorial failures are highly visible, and advertisers may demand independent validation of measurement claims.

Viewership is only the first test. Investors and rights holders should watch:
- Incremental Prime behavior: signups during major events, sports-viewer retention and post-season churn.
- Viewing quality: average audience, average-minute audience, completion, concurrency, repeat viewing and international usage.
- Advertising economics: sell-through, pricing, ad load, renewals and incremental spending from existing Amazon advertisers.
- Commerce results: attributed purchases, new-to-brand customers and the effect on retail-media margins.
- Rights economics: fees, production and distribution costs, revenue sharing and the degree of exclusivity.
- Strategic spillovers: Prime Video engagement, devices, Channels subscriptions and international Prime adoption.
Public disclosures currently show strong advertising momentum and substantial reported audiences, but not the combined return on sports rights.
Bottom line
Amazon is betting that sports make the whole Prime ecosystem more valuable. The clearest evidence so far is the advertising opportunity: large live audiences, sold-out inventory and a direct connection to Amazon’s retail-media tools. The membership case is logical but not quantified, while rights profitability remains private. Amazon may not need every package to pay for itself as a video subscription if sports improve retention, advertising and commerce together—but the company has not disclosed enough data to prove that full return.
