Sonos shelved its planned video-streaming player, reportedly codenamed Pinewood, on March 12, 2025. The project had reportedly reached months of beta testing, but CEO Tom Conrad told employees that Sonos’ video push was off the table “for now.” That wording leaves a future revival possible, yet no relaunch or successor has been confirmed as of August 16, 2026.
What Sonos actually cancelled
Pinewood was described as Sonos’ first dedicated video-streaming player and a planned major hardware release. Reporting summarized by The Verge via Investing.com said the device was well into development and had undergone months of beta testing.

That establishes a substantial project rather than a public rumor or an early sketch. It does not establish a final design, price, operating system, ports, supported services or release date. Those specifications were not confirmed in the reviewed material.
The likely strategic idea was a tighter connection between a television, Sonos soundbars, speakers and headphones. A Sonos-made box could have given the company more control over TV audio routing, multi-room playback and the interface linking video and music. Those are reasonable expectations about its role, not confirmed Pinewood features.

When and why the project was shelved
The decision came in March 2025
The cancellation report was published on March 12, 2025. It should not be described as a new cancellation in 2026; the current question is what that earlier decision means now.
A broader strategic reset
The reported internal announcement came during a difficult period for Sonos and a reassessment led by Conrad. Sonos was repairing the consequences of its troubled 2024 app rollout, reviewing its roadmap and managing restructuring and operating costs. Its fiscal 2026 disclosures emphasize reliability, a stronger software experience, growth and operational discipline. The Pinewood team was redirected to other assignments.
Sonos has not publicly said that one single factor killed the player. Market conditions also matter: a new box would have faced Apple, Roku, Amazon, Google and established smart-TV platforms with mature app ecosystems and enormous scale. That competitive pressure is context, not a stated company explanation.

“For now” does not mean a release is scheduled
Conrad’s reported phrase, “for now,” is important. Sonos did not establish a permanent cancellation, so saying Pinewood is definitively dead goes beyond the evidence. At the same time, no reviewed Sonos newsroom or investor announcement confirms that development resumed, gives a release date or names a successor. The most accurate description is shelved or cancelled for now, not delayed on an active schedule.

The company continued to release products after Pinewood was shelved. Sonos’ official release archive lists the following 2026 announcements:
| Product or initiative | What is confirmed | What it means for buyers |
|---|---|---|
| Amp Multi | Announced in January 2026 as a professional-grade multichannel streaming amplifier. | Designed for custom installation and advanced residential audio, not as a streaming-box replacement. |
| Play | Announced in March 2026 as a simpler entry point to the Sonos system. | An audio product for new or expanding Sonos households. |
| Era 100 SL | Announced in March 2026 alongside Play. | A streamlined speaker option within Sonos’ connected-audio range. |
| Automotive expansion | Sonos announced work with Škoda. | Evidence of continued expansion of Sonos audio beyond traditional home products. |
These announcements, collected in the Sonos newsroom and investor archive, contradict the idea that Sonos stopped making hardware.

What Sonos is emphasizing in 2026
Sonos’ public messaging now centers on its connected-home audio system, better software and longer-term platform ambitions. In earnings comments, Conrad described conversational computing and predictive intelligence as potential parts of an “operating environment” for AI in the home—hardware, services and knowledge of how people use different rooms.
That points to an ecosystem strategy even without a public video player. Sonos is still trying to coordinate speakers, services and devices across a household; the company has simply not shown that Pinewood, or another streaming box, is part of the near-term plan.
Conrad also said Sonos would hold a product-launch event in September 2026, according to the July 29, 2026 earnings-call account at MarketBeat. The product was not identified in the reviewed material. There is no verified basis for calling that event a Pinewood revival.

What the cancellation means for Sonos owners and shoppers
If you need a streaming device
Do not postpone a purchase solely because you are waiting for Pinewood. Sonos’ current materials do not list a streaming player, and there is no confirmed launch date. Use an established streaming platform or the apps built into your television, then connect your TV to a Sonos soundbar or home-theater system as supported by your model.
If you want Sonos home theater now
Sonos soundbars do not require a Sonos streaming box. Existing products work with compatible televisions and third-party streaming hardware. The official Arc Ultra suits buyers seeking a premium soundbar, while the Beam is aimed at smaller rooms and more modest setups. Neither product provides video apps; they provide Sonos audio integration.
If you are building a custom system
Amp Multi is relevant to installers and multichannel residential audio. It is not a consumer alternative to Apple TV, Roku or a smart-TV interface.

Streaming alternatives while Pinewood is unavailable
| Device or platform | Best for | How it differs from a hypothetical Sonos player | Official information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K | Households using Apple services and devices. | Strong app ecosystem and Apple integration, but not Sonos-native. | Apple’s product page |
| Roku Ultra | Broad service access and a platform-neutral interface. | Roku specializes in video streaming; Sonos specializes in connected audio. | Roku’s product page |
| Smart-TV platform | People who want no additional box. | Convenient built-in apps, with audio integration determined by the television and connected equipment. | Check the television manufacturer’s current specifications. |
These options replace the streaming function, not Sonos’ multi-room audio system. Current prices, storage tiers, bundles and stock change frequently and should be checked on the linked official pages before purchase.
Common questions about Pinewood
Would Pinewood have replaced Apple TV or Roku?
Not necessarily. No confirmed specification says whether Sonos intended a full platform competitor or an audio-focused home-theater hub.
Why build a box when televisions already stream?
A Sonos device could have offered tighter audio routing, multi-room controls and one interface for TV and music. It would also have required Sonos to compete in a crowded, mature category.
Should you wait before buying a soundbar?
Only if a future Sonos video device is essential to your decision. There is no confirmed Pinewood timetable, while current Sonos soundbars work with existing TV and streaming connections.
Bottom line
Sonos shelved its Pinewood video-streaming player in March 2025 after substantial development and beta testing. “For now” keeps a future return possible, but no revival has been confirmed by August 16, 2026. Sonos remains active in audio hardware, software and connected-home experimentation, with another product event scheduled for September. Buy a current streaming platform if you need video today, and choose Sonos audio products based on the sound system you want now—not on an unannounced box.
