Amazon calls the series refresher Recaps. It launched in 2025, uses generative AI alongside Amazon moderators, and is limited to eligible U.S. English-language Kindle books. A separate tool, Story So Far, summarizes an individual book only through the reader’s current position to reduce spoilers.
What Kindle Recaps does
Recaps is Amazon’s “previously on” service for readers returning to a series after a long break. It provides a short refresher on the selected book, including major themes, plot developments, characters and arcs. It is designed to save readers from rereading an entire volume, not to replace the original text.
Amazon introduced Recaps in 2025 and expanded access to selected series pages on Amazon.com in July 2026. The feature is therefore established rather than brand-new. Amazon’s reader documentation describes the recaps as Amazon-created and checked with moderator help.
Is the recap really generated by AI?
Amazon told TechCrunch that it uses technology including generative AI and Amazon moderators to create short recaps. “AI-assisted” is the most precise description: Amazon has not publicly detailed the model, prompts, training data, review workflow or whether a recap is generated live when requested.

Recaps versus Story So Far
| Feature | Purpose | Spoiler scope | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recaps | Refreshes a previously read book in a series | May reveal major events from the selected book | Series grouping on Kindle and iOS; selected Amazon.com series pages |
| Story So Far | Helps resume an individual book | Designed to stop at the reader’s current position | Supported Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app |
Story So Far is not a renamed Recaps feature. Amazon describes it as a progress-aware, spoiler-free recap for thousands of popular fiction titles in the United States. Kindle firmware release notes list the feature in version 5.19.5 (June 2026), but software support does not make every title eligible.
How to open a Recap
On a Kindle e-reader
- Open Library and find the series grouping.
- Open the grouping’s three-dot (ellipsis) menu.
- Select View Recaps.
- Choose a book if Amazon offers more than one recap.
If View Recaps is absent, Amazon says a supported recap may not be available for that grouping.

- In the Kindle Library, press and hold the supported book or open its three-dot menu.
- Choose Read recap when it is shown.
- While reading, you may also find the option in the book’s three-dot menu.
The exact placement can vary by device software and app version. Story So Far is intended to summarize only the portion already read, so it is the safer choice when you want to avoid later revelations.
Who can use these features?
Amazon’s current documentation limits Recaps to readers in the United States and to eligible, best-selling, English-language Kindle books in series. The book may have been purchased or borrowed. Story So Far is likewise described for U.S. readers on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app, covering thousands of best-selling English-language Kindle books that have been purchased or borrowed.

- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
- There is no public, complete eligibility list.
- Not every book in a series qualifies.
- Non-English editions, titles outside the supported U.S. catalog and books without an eligible series association may not qualify.
- Amazon’s cited documentation does not establish support for Android, sideloaded books or personal documents.
- Independent or less-popular titles may fall outside the described coverage, but Amazon has not published a rule for every such case.
Neither feature is identified as a separately priced add-on or as Kindle Unlimited-only. You still need access to an eligible book, an Amazon account and a supported device or app.
Why “View Recaps” or “Read recap” may be missing
- The title or series is not among Amazon’s enabled books.
- You are outside the United States or using an unsupported language edition.
- The book is not recognized as an eligible series title.
- You are viewing an individual book when Recaps is attached to the series grouping.
- Your Kindle software or app has not received the relevant rollout.
- Story So Far is not enabled for that title or the account has not received access.
Updating the device or app can address software availability, but it cannot make an ineligible title qualify.

Spoilers, errors and author control
What readers should expect
Ordinary Recaps summarize a completed book and can expose its central twist, deaths or ending. They are not spoiler-free series synopses. Story So Far is specifically designed to avoid material beyond the reader’s progress, although readers should still follow the on-screen scope.

What happens when a recap is wrong?
Amazon says moderators assist its technology, but it publishes no accuracy guarantee. Check important names, relationships, timelines and ending details against the book itself. If an author or rights holder finds an error, Amazon’s KDP guidance directs them to contact Amazon.
Can authors edit or opt out?
No. Amazon says Recaps are always on for the reader experience: authors cannot enroll or unenroll a title and cannot write or edit its recap. They can report an error to Amazon, but the public documentation does not promise a correction deadline.
What Amazon has not explained
The published material does not describe how book content is processed, whether summaries are cached or generated on demand, what model is used, or how long any associated data is retained. Readers concerned about generative AI should regard those details as undisclosed rather than assume a particular pipeline.

Should Recaps influence a Kindle purchase?
For most buyers, no. Recaps are useful for U.S. readers who regularly return to long English-language series, and Story So Far can make interrupted reading less frustrating. But title, country and account eligibility are more important than the Kindle model itself.
- Best reason to try it: You already own an iPhone or iPad and want the lowest-cost way to test eligible Kindle reading features through the Kindle iOS app.
- Choose hardware for: screen size, front lighting, waterproofing, color, note-taking, storage and portability—not Recaps alone.
- Check content access: Kindle books can be purchased or borrowed; Recaps is not presented as a Kindle Unlimited exclusive.
- Browse devices: Amazon’s Kindle range includes basic Kindle, Paperwhite, Colorsoft and Scribe categories.
Current device, book and subscription prices are not necessary to use the feature and vary over time.
Bottom line
Kindle Recaps is a real Amazon feature that uses generative AI with human moderation to refresh eligible books in a series. Its biggest limitation is availability: it is selective, U.S.-focused and English-language. Story So Far is the more useful option for readers resuming a book without learning what happens next. Both are convenient aids, not authoritative replacements for the original novel, and neither is a strong reason by itself to buy a new Kindle.
