Google did not make a fully AI-generated remake of The Wizard of Oz. For Sphere in Las Vegas, Google, Sphere Studios, Magnopus and Warner Bros. Discovery adapted the 1939 film into an approximately 75-minute immersive experience. The pipeline combines archival film, AI-assisted restoration, generated imagery beyond the original frame, conventional visual effects, a newly recorded orchestral score and Sphere’s physical effects.
What is The Wizard of Oz at Sphere?
This is a purpose-built Sphere Experience, not a normal theatrical re-release and not the 102-minute film simply projected on a larger screen. It opened in Las Vegas on August 28, 2025. The production was designed for Sphere’s approximately 160,000-square-foot interior LED display, which Sphere describes as having a 16K-by-16K resolution. The venue seats up to 17,600 people.
The presentation lasts about 75 minutes. Dorothy’s story, the recognizable characters, the original dialogue and the cast’s vocal performances remain central, but scenes are re-composed to surround the audience. Immersive sound and 4D effects add environmental sensations associated with the journey to Oz. Sphere’s official description is available on its AI project page.
Why the 1939 film had to be changed
The MGM film was photographed in a 4:3 frame. Sphere’s curved display is dramatically wider, taller and more enveloping. Cropping the old image would remove important action; stretching it would distort the actors and sets; placing it in the middle would leave most of the canvas unused.

The adaptation therefore reconstructs material outside the photographed borders and changes how shots coexist. A scene that originally separated characters through cuts or camera movement can be presented as a more continuous, expanded composition. The three AI techniques
Super resolution
AI models enlarged and reconstructed detail from the original 35mm Technicolor material so it could be displayed across Sphere’s enormous, high-resolution surface. This is enhancement, not a lossless recovery of every detail: an upscaling model infers information that is no longer fully present in the source.
Outpainting
Outpainting generates imagery beyond the edges of the original frame. It supplies additional scenery, set extensions and visible portions of characters that the 1939 camera never photographed. That makes the project more than restoration: some of the image surrounding the original footage is newly created, even when it is designed to match the film.

Performance generation
Google also describes AI-assisted ways to extend or recombine existing performances so characters can remain present in a wider composition. The most accurate description is that generated extensions and composites continue or reposition existing performances; it is not evidence that a model independently invented a new Judy Garland performance or new dialogue.

Which models were used?
Google’s public material identifies specially tuned versions of Veo, Imagen and Gemini. Later Google Cloud material specifically refers to a specialized version of Veo 2. These were production systems adapted for this project, not unchanged consumer versions that a viewer can reproduce with a simple prompt. What remains original—and what does not?

Google says the team consulted the shooting script, production illustrations, set plans, promotional photographs, sketches, scores, cinematography notes and other archival records. Those materials helped preserve continuity of characters, sets and camera intent rather than relying on generic text prompts.
How much of the work was human?
AI was one part of a large production involving Sphere Studios, Google Cloud, Google DeepMind, Magnopus and Warner Bros. Discovery, alongside researchers, engineers, archivists, producers, visual-effects artists, compositors, sound teams and artistic supervisors. People selected shots, designed compositions, fine-tuned models, corrected generated material and decided how far an expanded scene could depart from the photographed original.

What “reconceptualize” means here
In this project, “reconceptualize” means translating an edited rectangular movie into an environment where the picture surrounds the audience. More of a set can remain visible at once, off-frame areas become part of the spectacle, and sound and physical sensations reinforce the image.
It does not mean that Google rewrote the screenplay, replaced the cast or generated a new narrative film from scratch. The best description is an AI-assisted immersive adaptation and expansion of the original film.

The score was recorded again and shaped for Sphere Immersive Sound while the original vocal performances were retained. Sphere says its directional, programmable system uses approximately 167,000 speakers. The venue also supplies physical 4D effects, making the experience different from watching a restored print at home or in a conventional cinema. Details are on the official experience page.

The creative trade-off
- Immersion: expanded environments and continuous compositions can make Oz fill the audience’s field of view.
- Interpretation: generated areas are visual reconstructions, not original photographed footage.
- Legibility: AI enhancement makes old material usable on a huge display, while inferred detail can look different from photographic grain.
- Focus: the venue turns the film into a spectacle, which may deepen the experience for some viewers and compete with the story for others.
These are design choices rather than proof that the attraction succeeds or fails artistically. Public promotional material does not establish a complete, independent critical consensus about artifacts, emotional impact or value for money.
Open questions about authenticity and rights
The public descriptions do not provide a shot-by-shot account of which pixels are original, AI-generated, conventionally recreated or composited. They also do not offer a complete public legal accounting of permissions for archival elements or generated extensions of performers’ likenesses. Warner Bros. collaborated on continuity, and the stated aim is to honor the original, but questions about disclosure, historical authenticity and performer consent remain reasonable subjects for scrutiny.
Commercial status and how to check tickets
Sphere Entertainment reported that, as of June 16, 2026, the experience had sold more than 3 million tickets and generated more than $400 million in ticket sales. Those are the company’s reported figures, not an independently audited attendance analysis; see the announcement.
The official listing consulted for this article showed performances from July 16 through August 29, 2026. Dates can change, so use the live Sphere shows and tickets page for current availability and checkout terms. No ticket price is stated here because prices vary by performance and were not reliably established in the supplied material.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Choose it if you want a large-scale audiovisual adaptation, Sphere’s spatial sound and physical effects, or a new way to experience a familiar classic.
- Think twice if you want a complete 102-minute presentation, an untouched archival print or a conventional movie-theater experience.
- Because Sphere is an immersive venue rather than a normal cinema, check the venue’s current accessibility and visitor guidance if you are sensitive to intense motion, flashing imagery or enclosed, enveloping environments.
Bottom line
Google did use generative-AI techniques on The Wizard of Oz at Sphere, but “AI remake” is the wrong shorthand. The attraction preserves the 1939 film’s story and vocal performances while using super resolution, outpainting and performance generation—alongside human visual effects, archival research, a re-recorded score and Sphere’s hardware—to build a new immersive presentation. Its significance is less that AI “made a movie” than that generative tools became part of a supervised pipeline for adapting legacy cinema to a radically different screen.
