1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDedicated NOOK e-readers cannot natively open Amazon Kindle ebooks. Kindle’s DRM authorizes Amazon’s apps and devices, not the NOOK reading library. Some Android-based NOOK tablets may run the Kindle app, subject to the exact model, Android version, Google Play access, region and current app requirements. That is app-based reading—not importing a Kindle purchase into NOOK.
The answer by NOOK type
| Device or situation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| NOOK GlowLight and other dedicated e-ink readers | Amazon Kindle ebooks will not load into the NOOK library or open as native NOOK books. |
| Older NOOK tablets | Compatibility depends on their retired status, Android version and whether Google Play still functions; do not assume Kindle-app support. |
| Newer Android-based NOOK tablets | A Kindle-app route may be possible if the exact tablet offers Google Play and meets the app’s requirements. Confirm before buying. |
| NOOK app on a phone or tablet | Reads Barnes & Noble purchases and supported non-DRM EPUB files, not Amazon’s DRM-protected Kindle books. |
Barnes & Noble’s support guidance says Kindle ebooks cannot be read on NOOK because Kindle DRM prevents them from being loaded onto non-Amazon devices. See Barnes & Noble’s Kindle-on-NOOK guidance.
Why Kindle books do not work on a NOOK
An ebook has both a file format and a usage license. DRM (digital-rights management) controls which software and devices may authenticate and open the protected content. A Kindle Store purchase is delivered through Amazon’s account and authorization system; a dedicated NOOK is not an authorized Kindle client.
Therefore, copying a downloaded file, changing its filename or placing it in a NOOK folder does not turn it into an EPUB or remove its protection. Barnes & Noble describes these restrictions in its DRM policy, which prohibits bypassing or defeating digital-content security.

Can USB transfer solve it?
No—not for a normal DRM-protected Kindle purchase. A typical failed attempt looks like this:
- Download a Kindle-related file from Amazon.
- Connect the NOOK to a computer by USB.
- Copy the file into a books or documents folder.
- Find that the title is missing, reports an unsupported file, or will not open.
The cable may be working correctly. The decisive problem is usually Kindle DRM or a Kindle-specific delivery format such as AZW or KFX, not the USB connection. NOOK format support varies by model; consult Barnes & Noble’s format table.
Renaming is not conversion
Changing .azw or another filename to .epub changes only the label. It does not change the underlying format or DRM, so it is not a valid fix.

Could a NOOK tablet run the Kindle app?
Possibly, but this is a compatibility question for the particular tablet rather than a feature of NOOK e-readers. Barnes & Noble documents Google-account and Google Play functionality on eligible tablet devices in its NOOK tablet setup instructions and explains Google Play content on eligible devices here.
- GlowLight e-ink readers should not be assumed to run Android apps.
- Google Play access does not guarantee that the current Kindle app will install or work.
- Android version, device certification, geographic availability and Amazon’s current requirements can affect installation.
- Even if the app works, books remain in Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem; they do not appear in the NOOK library.
Before purchasing a NOOK tablet for Kindle reading, identify the exact model, check its installed Android version and open its available app store to verify Kindle availability.
Which files can a NOOK read?
Format support is model-specific and does not override DRM.

A DRM-free EPUB may work when the model supports EPUB. An Adobe-DRM EPUB or PDF uses a different authorization system and can be transferred through Adobe Digital Editions. A Kindle-protected Amazon file is a separate case and is not made compatible by having an EPUB-capable reader.
DRM-free files
“Downloadable” does not mean “transferable.” Check the source’s license, protection status and actual format. Conversion is reasonable only for a DRM-free file you legally own and are permitted to convert; it is not a legitimate general solution for protected Kindle purchases.

- Install Adobe Digital Editions.
- Authorize the computer with an Adobe ID.
- Authorize the NOOK with the same Adobe ID where required.
- Download an EPUB or PDF from a source that uses Adobe DRM.
- Open it in Adobe Digital Editions and transfer it to the NOOK.
Barnes & Noble’s Adobe-DRM instructions note that, on Windows, NOOK HD and HD+ devices using MTP cannot be transferred directly inside ADE; manually copy the unlocked file to the device’s MyFiles folder. Mac users can transfer directly in ADE for applicable devices. This workflow does not apply to a Kindle Store purchase.
Check your NOOK’s age and support status
Device age changes the available workaround, not the basic Kindle-DRM rule. As listed on Barnes & Noble’s device-status page dated April 1, 2026, active models include NOOK GlowLight 4, GlowLight 4e, GlowLight 4 Plus, Lenovo NOOK 10-inch HD, Lenovo NOOK 9-inch Tablet and NOOK Reading Tablet 8.7-inch. The NOOK 1st Edition, NOOK Color, NOOK Simple Touch, NOOK Tablet, NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ appear among retired or unsupported models. See the current device-status list for model-specific updates.
A retired reader does not gain Kindle compatibility because it has a USB port. On a tablet, outdated software can also prevent Google Play or Kindle installation.

Legitimate alternatives
| Your situation | Most practical choice | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You already own a few Kindle books | Use the Kindle app on a supported Android, iOS, Fire, Windows or macOS device. | You read on a phone, tablet or computer rather than NOOK e-ink hardware. |
| You have a large Amazon library and want e-ink | Use a Kindle e-reader. | Your primary library remains tied to Amazon. |
| You want to keep using a dedicated NOOK | Buy the same title from Barnes & Noble if the edition is available. | You may need to purchase it again; edition, price, region, lending terms and DRM can differ. Browse B&N ebooks. |
| You borrow library ebooks | Use a compatible Adobe-DRM EPUB/PDF workflow. | Availability depends on the library, title and NOOK model. |
| You have a permitted DRM-free EPUB | Sideload it if your NOOK model supports that format. | Source licensing and model support still apply. |
For hardware information, B&N’s NOOK product pages are at NOOK e-readers and NOOK tablets. Amazon’s Kindle destination is Amazon Kindle. Prices and promotions change, so verify live listings.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Identify the exact NOOK model and whether it is e-ink or Android-based.
- Check whether the device is active or retired.
- Confirm that the book came from the Amazon Kindle Store.
- Determine whether the file is DRM-free, Adobe-DRM or Kindle DRM.
- Check whether the file is EPUB/PDF or a Kindle delivery format such as AZW or KFX.
- On a tablet, verify Google Play access, Android version and Kindle-app availability.
- If the book opens in the Kindle app on your phone but not after USB copying, that is expected: the app authenticates with Amazon while the NOOK reader does not.
If Kindle is unavailable on a NOOK tablet, use a standard supported Android, iOS, Fire, Windows or macOS device instead of forcing an unsupported app onto an e-ink reader.
Bottom line
A dedicated NOOK cannot natively read an Amazon Kindle ebook. An Android-based NOOK tablet may read it through the Kindle app if the exact hardware and software support that app, but the purchase will not become a NOOK book. DRM-free EPUB files may be transferable, and Adobe-DRM EPUB/PDF files can use Adobe Digital Editions. Do not rely on renaming files or DRM-removal tools; choose the Kindle app, Kindle hardware, a separate B&N edition or a compatible library workflow instead.
