For broad in-universe chronology, watch: Kong: Skull Island → Skull Island → Godzilla → Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 1 → Season 2 → Godzilla: King of the Monsters → Godzilla vs. Kong → Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This is a practical story order, not a scene-by-scene timeline: Monarch jumps between decades, so each season should be watched intact.
The MonsterVerse in chronological order
-
Kong: Skull Island (2017) — main story in 1973
The earliest major film story is set in 1973, near the end of the Vietnam War. A short opening sequence takes place in 1944, but it is part of the same film and should not be separated. The film establishes Kong, Skull Island and the idea that giant creatures have shaped human history. Apple TV listing.
-
Skull Island (2023) — after the film, exact year not firmly stated
This animated series continues the Kong and Skull Island side of the continuity. Watch it immediately after the film because its sequel relationship is clearer than its exact calendar date. Treat this as broad placement rather than a precisely dated entry.
-
Godzilla (2014) — principal events in 2014
The first-released MonsterVerse film culminates in the San Francisco disaster later called G-Day. Although it was released before Kong: Skull Island, its fictional events occur later. Legendary’s film overview is available through Apple TV and the official Godzilla filmography.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Season 1 (2023) — modern story begins in 2015
Season 1’s contemporary storyline starts after the 2014 Godzilla event, while flashbacks cover the 1950s and earlier Monarch discoveries. Watching it after Godzilla gives the modern plot its clearest context.
-
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Season 2 (2026) — after Season 1
Season 2 premiered February 27, 2026 and concluded May 1, 2026. Place it after Season 1 and before the later film-era events. Promotional material does not establish one calendar year for every storyline, so this is a broad chronology rather than an exact date for every scene. See Apple’s season announcement.
-
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) — about five years after Godzilla
The world now knows Titans exist. Monarch’s mythology expands as Godzilla confronts Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah.

- Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 1 (2023)

- Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 (2026)
Release order preserves the franchise’s gradual reveals: a relatively grounded Godzilla story, the introduction of Kong’s period adventure, the wider Titan mythology, Hollow Earth and finally the Godzilla–Kong partnership. It also avoids making Monarch’s time jumps your first explanation of the universe.
Why Monarch cannot be placed as one simple date
The series intercuts 1950s Monarch history, earlier family and Titan discoveries, the 2014 Godzilla event and a contemporary storyline beginning in 2015. Splitting episodes or scenes around the films would be cumbersome and would damage the show’s intended reveals. Watch Season 1 from episode one through its finale, then do the same with Season 2.
Where Skull Island fits
The animated series follows the Kong-centered events established by Kong: Skull Island. Its exact year is less explicitly documented than the films, so “after Kong: Skull Island and before the main Godzilla-era films” is the most useful placement. Do not treat it as a precisely dated 1970s chapter without episode-level evidence.

Chronological order versus release order
| Choice | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Chronological order | Viewers who want the fictional history to progress from Kong’s 1973 adventure into the modern Titan era | Monarch still contains flashbacks, and Skull Island has no firmly stated single year |
| Release order | Most first-time viewers and anyone prioritizing intended reveals | The story does not begin with the earliest fictional event |
There is no universally “correct” order. For newcomers, release order is the safer recommendation; for a rewatch focused on fictional chronology, use the eight-step list above.
What counts as the MonsterVerse?
This guide covers Legendary’s shared Godzilla–Kong continuity: five theatrical films plus the television productions Skull Island and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It does not include Toho’s separate Godzilla films, Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Minus One, the 1998 American Godzilla, Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong, the 1933 or 1976 King Kong films, or Pacific Rim. Games and graphic novels are outside this screen watch order.

| Service or route | What it is useful for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV+ | Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Seasons 1 and 2 | Official Monarch service; the retrieved pages did not establish a reliable current U.S. subscription price. |
| Netflix | Skull Island | Check that the animated series remains in the U.S. catalog; licensing and plans can change. |
| Apple TV Store, Amazon Video and Fandango at Home | Digital rentals or purchases of individual films | Availability and prices vary by title, resolution, promotion and date. The Apple five-film bundle does not replace the television services. |
| Hulu | The listed title Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire | Do not assume Hulu carries the complete MonsterVerse lineup. |
The lowest-complexity route is usually to use Apple TV+ for Monarch, rent or buy films individually, and add Netflix only if you want Skull Island and do not already have it. Check JustWatch’s U.S. guide and its title listings for changes before viewing.
What comes next?
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is an announced 2027 theatrical sequel, not part of the completed watch list as of August 18, 2026. Its planned date can change. See the official announcement for the latest status.
