This shortlist covers Netflix US arrivals scheduled for Monday, August 17 through Sunday, August 23, 2026. It narrows a crowded release calendar to seven picks with distinct reasons to watch: a returning adventure hit, serious dramas, an investigative documentary, reality television, dark workplace satire and supernatural fiction. Some are new productions; others are older films arriving on Netflix US for the first time. Dates and availability are current as of August 16, 2026 and can change.
For the complete schedule, see the weekly Netflix release listing. Check the Netflix title page in your country before planning a watch.

Netflix has not been given a confirmed episode cadence for every series in the available schedule. Treat the dates above as arrival dates, not a promise that a complete season will drop at once.
1. Outer Banks season 5
Arrives Thursday, August 20. The Pogues return for a fifth and final season, with another treasure hunt framed as the emotional conclusion to the series. It is the week’s clearest event for existing fans, not a sensible starting point for newcomers.

Watch this if: you have followed the Pogues through four seasons and want the franchise’s promised endgame. Skip it if: teen adventure melodrama and continuity-heavy plotting are not your thing.
Spoiler warning: avoid recaps and social media discussion of the season-four cliffhanger and character deaths if you want to begin unspoiled. Whether all episodes arrive together should be checked on Netflix’s title page.
2. Armageddon Time
Arrives Monday, August 17. James Gray’s 2022 coming-of-age drama is new to Netflix US, not a new 2026 film. Set in 1980s Queens, it follows a young Jewish-American boy negotiating family expectations, class and prejudice while forming a friendship with a Black classmate. Banks Repeta leads a cast including Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Anthony Hopkins.
This is the strongest choice for a self-contained movie night when you want a substantial film rather than a new franchise. Its intimate perspective examines privilege, moral education and the damage caused by adults’ assumptions; it is not designed as a broad, uncomplicated crowd-pleaser.

Watch this if: you want an established drama with a major cast and historical texture. Skip it if: you are looking for light entertainment or a fast thriller.
3. The Audacity
Arrives Wednesday, August 19. This AMC series comes to Netflix through a licensing arrangement. Its premise is deliberately uncomfortable: a would-be technology titan blackmails his therapist into helping rescue his company, and the personal and corporate schemes begin to unravel. Billy Magnussen, Sarah Goldberg, Zach Galifianakis, Rob Corddry and Simon Helberg headline.
Think dark workplace and Silicon Valley satire rather than a conventional workplace comedy. The appeal is watching morally compromised people rationalize increasingly destructive choices, with awkwardness doing as much work as the jokes.
Watch this if: you enjoy corporate satire, antiheroes and comedy that makes you squirm. Skip it if: you want sympathetic leads or a straightforward feel-good series. Netflix’s arrival listing does not establish that this is a Netflix-produced original.

4. Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing
Arrives Wednesday, August 19. Directed by Rory Kennedy, this investigative documentary follows Downfall: The Case Against Boeing and examines continuing controversies around Boeing. It includes discussion of whistleblower John Barnett’s death and testimony from other whistleblowers.
This is serious current-affairs viewing, not background entertainment. Keep the documentary’s framing clear: testimony and allegations are presented by subjects and filmmakers; court findings, regulatory records and other independently established facts are separate categories. The film should not be treated as proof of legal liability or as a definitive account of the cause of any death.
Watch this if: you prefer institutional investigations, aviation safety and accountability reporting. Skip it if: you want a light, escapist watch. Seeing Downfall first may add context, but it is not essential.
5. Love Is Blind: UK season 3
Arrives Wednesday, August 19. The third UK season returns to Netflix’s dating-reality format. Contestants build relationships without initially seeing one another, then test whether engagement and real-world compatibility survive outside the pods.

Its value is social rather than plot-driven: conversations, alliances and arguments make it easy to watch with friends. Because reality series are edited, on-screen personas are constructed versions of real participants, not objective biographies. Netflix’s listing should be checked for the episode-release pattern; a staggered rollout is possible.
Watch this if: you want communal viewing and relationship drama. Skip it if: you need a tightly scripted story or dislike reality-TV conventions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. I Swear
Arrives Saturday, August 22. Robert Aramayo plays Scottish activist John Davidson, who grew up with severe Tourette syndrome during the 1980s. The biographical drama focuses on disability representation, social misunderstanding, friendship, community and self-advocacy.
Its subject makes it more emotionally demanding than the week’s mainstream releases. Tourette syndrome is part of Davidson’s life, not a shorthand plot device or a substitute for a medical explainer. As with any dramatized biography, viewers should distinguish the film’s shaped narrative from the full historical record.

7. Talamasca: The Secret Order
Arrives Sunday, August 23. This AMC supernatural series joins Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe. Its premise centers on a secret organization that monitors supernatural activity.
Prior knowledge of Interview with the Vampire, Mayfair Witches or other Immortal Universe stories may enrich the experience, but no official statement here establishes that those shows are mandatory homework. It is the most genre-specific pick of the week, and the title page should be checked to see whether Netflix is releasing a complete season or episodes on a schedule.
Watch this if: you enjoy occult conspiracies, secret orders and shared-universe television. Skip it if: you prefer realistic drama or want a completely self-contained story with no franchise texture.
