Updated August 18, 2026: This 2024 snapshot points to legitimate services rather than changing MoviesJoy mirrors. Catalogs, prices, device support, and availability can change, and examples below are primarily for U.S. viewers.
The closest free replacement is Tubi. Pluto TV is better for live channels, Kanopy and Hoopla are strongest for eligible library users, and JustWatch is the fastest way to find one specific film legally. None of these services promises every new release, but they avoid the licensing and security uncertainty of unknown streaming domains.
What makes an alternative safer?
MoviesJoy has been associated with free, on-demand movie and television pages, but the name has appeared across changing domains and clones. A page that loads is not proof of ownership, licensing, or security. Avoid mirror lists, fake play buttons, unknown browser extensions, random APK files, and payment forms reached through pop-ups. A VPN does not turn an unlicensed stream into a licensed one.
For this list, “best” balances legal or library-backed access, cost, catalog usefulness, device support, advertising, and ease of use. Established services are generally safer than unknown mirrors, although no platform is completely risk-free.

The 10 best alternatives
1. Tubi — best overall free alternative
Tubi is the nearest legitimate match for viewers who want a large on-demand selection without a paid subscription. Tubi describes the service as free and legal, with no subscription or credit card required: official details. Its service is funded by advertising and currently has no ad-free option: Tubi’s advertising explanation.
Best for: Free movie watching across common browsers, mobile devices, smart TVs, consoles, and streaming platforms. Trade-offs: Ads are unavoidable, titles rotate, and the newest theatrical films are uncommon. Availability varies by territory.
2. Pluto TV — best for live channels and movies
Pluto TV combines scheduled live channels with an on-demand library. It suits viewers who enjoy themed channels and channel surfing rather than choosing every title on demand. Advertising and changing schedules are part of the free model, so it is not a direct Netflix-style replacement.
3. The Roku Channel — best for Roku users
The Roku Channel places free ad-supported movies and television alongside rental, purchase, and subscription options. It is convenient in the Roku ecosystem, but check the label on each title: a listing in the interface is not necessarily free, and web, app, and device availability can differ.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
4. Plex — best for free streaming plus personal media
Plex offers hosted free, ad-supported programming and tools for organizing a household’s own legally acquired media. The hosted catalog is separate from personal files, and Plex can require more setup than Tubi or Pluto TV. It should never be understood as a way to obtain movies you do not lawfully own or access.
5. Kanopy — best for documentaries and independent cinema
Kanopy is free to users whose public library or university participates. Kanopy says its access is supported by those institutions and is ad-free; see its service information at Kanopy. Its strengths include documentaries, world cinema, independent films, classics, and educational programming. Eligibility and monthly play limits are set by each institution, and the catalog is not built around every new mainstream release.
6. Hoopla — best library option for streaming and downloads
Hoopla is library-funded, legal, subscription-free, and ad-free for eligible users. Its official guidance describes both streaming and downloads: Hoopla support. You need a card from a participating library, and monthly borrowing limits and selection vary by library.
7. YouTube — best for official free movies
YouTube Movies mixes free-with-ads titles with rentals, purchases, and programming uploaded by rights holders. The interface is familiar and widely supported, but search results can also contain unauthorized uploads. Use the official movie area, verified distributor channels, and clearly labeled free offers rather than random copies.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
8. Xumo Play — best for free channel-based viewing
Xumo Play is a free, ad-supported service focused on channels and scheduled programming. It works well for viewers who want to turn on a genre or entertainment channel instead of searching for a particular film. Schedules, on-demand depth, supported devices, and geographic access can change.
9. Sling Freestream — best free cable-like experience
Sling Freestream provides a free, ad-supported tier with live programming, movie channels, news, and general entertainment. It is primarily a live-TV option rather than a deep on-demand movie library. Distinguish Freestream from paid Sling plans and check the current channel lineup in your location.
10. Paid services or a rental marketplace — best for new releases
Free services generally cannot guarantee current theatrical releases. For a specific new film, the legitimate choices are usually a rental, a digital purchase, waiting for a subscription release, or checking a library service. Options include Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, Max, Peacock, and Fandango at Home. No paid service has everything; rights are divided by provider, country, and date. Current Disney offers, for example, should be treated as 2026 terms rather than 2024 pricing.

What “free” and “safe” actually mean
- Free with ads: Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel’s free catalog, Plex’s hosted free catalog, Xumo Play, and Sling Freestream.
- Free through an institution: Kanopy and Hoopla, generally with eligibility and borrowing limits.
- Mixed free and paid: YouTube and The Roku Channel.
- Paid: Subscription services, rentals, and purchases.
“Safe” means an identifiable operator, an official site or app-store listing, a clear catalog or library relationship, predictable account controls, and no demand for unknown software. It does not mean zero tracking, outages, or malicious ads on every surface. Commercial free services normally use advertising; Kanopy and Hoopla are the notable ad-free library routes when you qualify.
