They suit very different moods, from an unconventional music-industry drama to a claustrophobic survival thriller and a sunny romantic comedy.
That is a shorter list than the headline’s five suggests: the available confirmed information supports these three, not five movies that are both worthwhile and included with a U.S. subscription this weekend. The dates below distinguish a true weekend premiere from earlier August arrivals.

1. Mother Mary — best for an offbeat, stylish drama

Anne Hathaway plays a pop star reconnecting with her estranged former costume designer, played by Michaela Coel, ahead of a comeback performance. Their reunion brings unresolved wounds into a relationship that takes the film in psychological and mysterious directions. David Lowery directs; Hunter Schafer and Sian Clifford also star.
#1 Best Overall
- There's more to do in the snow than ski. Cult classic HOT DOG...THE MOVIE now available in a Director's Cut!
At about 1 hour 51 minutes and rated R, it is a fit for viewers who want a stylized adult drama rather than a conventional concert film. It is not a safe bet for every mood: Rotten Tomatoes listed a 70% Tomatometer score from 197 reviews and a 60% audience score from more than 250 verified ratings at the time of the cited listing. The split suggests a film that has found more favor with critics than audiences, not a universal crowd-pleaser. Rotten Tomatoes: Mother Mary.
Best reason to choose it: It is the clearest genuine streaming premiere of this group for the weekend, with a distinctive cast and an unusual premise.
Rank #2
- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
2. The Last House — best for a high-concept thriller
Where to watch: Netflix. It arrived August 7, so it is a recent August addition, not a new release for August 21–23.
Greta Lee and Wagner Moura lead this science-fiction thriller about a family mysteriously sealed inside its home, forced to survive without knowing why they are trapped. Louis Leterrier directs. The confined setting and unanswered question make it the pick for viewers after a tense, high-concept survival story.
Rank #3
- Halloween 3-Movie Collection (Blu-ray + Digital)
The available listing establishes the premise, service and August 7 arrival, but does not establish a runtime, rating or sufficiently sourced current review consensus. Check Netflix’s title page for viewing details and content guidance before starting. Associated Press coverage of The Last House.
Best reason to choose it: Its trapped-family setup offers a sharp contrast to the other picks if suspense is the priority.
Rank #4
- Runtime: 155 minutes
3. You, Me & Tuscany — best for a breezy rom-com
Where to watch: Peacock, where the film began streaming exclusively on August 7, 2026. It is included as a recent August recommendation, not a weekend premiere. Peacock’s movie page.
An aspiring chef travels to an Italian villa and pretends to be a man’s fiancée, then develops feelings for his cousin. Halle Bailey, Regé-Jean Page, Marco Calvani, Isabella Ferrari, Nia Vardalos and Aziza Scott star; Kat Coiro directs. The film runs 1 hour 45 minutes and is rated PG-13.

Rotten Tomatoes listed a 65% Tomatometer score and a 92% audience score at the time of the cited listing. That reception fits its role as a scenic, accessible comfort watch more than as a major critical event: the critical consensus calls it pleasant but predictable. Rotten Tomatoes: You, Me & Tuscany.
Best reason to choose it: Pick this for a light date-night movie with a sunny setting and familiar romantic-comedy beats.
Which one fits your weekend?
- For the actual Friday arrival: Choose Mother Mary if you are in the mood for a challenging, unconventional drama.
- For tension: Try The Last House on Netflix.
- For something lighter: Put on You, Me & Tuscany on Peacock.
Prime Video’s The Last Sunrise is not a pick for this weekend: its listed streaming date is August 26, five days after the weekend ends. Amazon’s August Prime Video schedule.
