The storefront is gone, but Microsoft’s current support guidance says previously purchased titles remain playable in the Movies & TV app on Xbox and Windows, including downloaded Windows content.
What actually shut down
This was a shutdown of Microsoft’s transactional storefront, not an announced deletion of every customer library. Microsoft no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase through:
- Microsoft.com
- Microsoft Store on Windows
- Microsoft Store on Xbox
Contemporaneous reporting placed the change on July 18, 2025, after users saw notifications and Microsoft updated its support documentation. Gizmodo reported the timing and user notifications. Microsoft’s wording concerns new purchases; the Movies & TV playback app and access to earlier purchases are treated separately.
Can you still watch movies and shows you bought?
According to Microsoft’s current Movies & TV support page, previously purchased movies and television programs remain available in the Movies & TV app on Xbox and Windows devices.

Windows downloads
Microsoft also says downloaded movies and shows remain available on Windows, with downloads supported up to HD resolution. A download in this context is not an unrestricted, DRM-free video file: playback remains associated with the Movies & TV app, the purchasing Microsoft account, supported hardware and the platform’s authentication systems.
What “remains available” does—and does not—mean
This is Microsoft’s current availability statement, not a promise that the service will operate forever. It does not establish support for every phone, television, browser or third-party media player. If a title matters to you, test playback while you still have access to the account and a supported Xbox or Windows device.

Can Microsoft purchases be transferred or refunded?
No direct library transfer
Microsoft says there is no direct way to transfer Movies & TV purchases to another digital retailer. You cannot assume a Microsoft library can be moved wholesale to Amazon, Apple, Fandango at Home or another service.
A limited Movies Anywhere possibility
Some eligible U.S. purchases may be linkable through Movies Anywhere. Eligibility depends on the title, participating studio and retailer, account region and other program rules. This is a selective linking option, not a Microsoft-wide migration of every purchase. The U.S.-focused possibility was noted in contemporaneous reporting.

Refund position
Microsoft’s Movies & TV guidance says movies and television shows are generally ineligible for refunds under the Microsoft Store Terms of Sale. The storefront closure itself is not described as triggering an automatic refund. Separate Microsoft procedures cover situations such as accidental or unauthorized purchases and other qualifying order issues; those processes are explained at Microsoft’s order-cancellation and refund support page.
Where to buy or rent new titles now
Microsoft’s support guidance points customers toward other transactional services, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. Compare the specific title, region and device support before buying.

Digital buying, renting and subscription streaming are different propositions. A purchase is usually access tied to a retailer account and its apps; a rental expires under that service’s terms; and a subscription provides access only while the plan and licensing agreement continue. Check for 4K or HDR, bonus features, television-season availability, rental versus purchase options and compatibility with your smart TV or streaming device. Current prices vary by title, format, region and promotions and should be checked on the retailer’s official page.

- Sign in to the original Microsoft account. A different account can make a legitimate purchase appear to be missing.
- Open Movies & TV on a supported Xbox or Windows device. Check the purchased library rather than searching the retired storefront.
- Play important titles. On Windows, verify that previously downloaded content still opens and note that Microsoft states an HD maximum for downloads.
- Secure your account access. Recover credentials and keep order-history details available; platform purchases depend on the account used at checkout.
- Check Movies Anywhere selectively. For U.S. titles, review the program’s eligibility rules instead of assuming every Microsoft purchase can be linked.
- Contact Microsoft Support if a title is missing. Provide the account and order information. Practical checks include confirming whether the item was bought, rented or obtained through a promotion, trying both Windows and Xbox when available, and considering regional licensing limits; Microsoft does not publish a single guaranteed recovery sequence for every missing-library case.
Why did Microsoft do it?
Microsoft has not provided a public explanation in the reporting available for this change. A spokesperson told Gizmodo that the company had nothing further to share at the time. Competition from subscription streaming, weaker demand for transactional video or a decision to prioritize other services are plausible industry interpretations, but they are not Microsoft’s stated reason.

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Microsoft ended direct movie and television sales through its own storefronts. It does not establish that Microsoft has abandoned Xbox entertainment, third-party streaming apps or all video playback.
The practical meaning of the shutdown
For new purchases, Microsoft is no longer the retailer. For existing buyers, Microsoft’s current policy describes continued playback on Xbox and Windows, including Windows downloads in HD. There is no direct transfer path, no general closure-triggered refund, and no guarantee that platform access is permanent. Treat the library as account-based digital access, test important titles now, and choose any replacement retailer according to your devices, region and preferred buying model.
