Spoilers for Good Boy (2025). Todd dies in the finale. The film deliberately leaves open whether an incurable illness, a supernatural force in his grandfather’s house, or both causes his decline. Indy survives, rejects the darkness that takes Todd, and leaves with Todd’s sister, Vera.
What happens in Good Boy?
Todd and his dog Indy leave city life for Todd’s family’s long-vacant country house. Indy quickly reacts to things people cannot see: empty corners, a presence in the rooms, warnings associated with Todd’s grandfather’s missing dog Bandit, and visions linked to the previous occupant’s death.

At the same time, Todd is already seriously ill. An MRI and his argument with a doctor about experimental treatment establish that his condition is incurable. His physical and emotional deterioration unfolds alongside Indy’s encounters with the house, making it impossible to separate a medical crisis from a haunting with certainty.
Because the story is restricted largely to a dog’s perspective, human explanations remain incomplete. People are often shown in silhouette or out of focus, while Indy cannot explain what he sees. Todd consequently appears frightening and isolated even when the film withholds an objective account of what is happening.

Does Todd die?
Yes. In the climax, Todd is pulled or led into the basement and the surrounding darkness. He tells Indy that he cannot follow. Todd does not come back, and the film treats his disappearance as death rather than a temporary abduction.
The cause is intentionally double-edged. Todd’s terminal illness provides a realistic explanation for his decline, while the force attached to the house appears to claim him. The movie does not resolve that conflict with a definitive medical or supernatural reveal.
What is the entity?
The entity has no confirmed name, origin, rules, or established mythology. Calling it a demon, a named spirit, or proof of a hereditary curse goes beyond what the film establishes.

The literal supernatural reading
Under the most direct horror interpretation, a malevolent presence is tied to the grandfather’s house. Indy detects it there, Bandit’s traces connect the property’s past to its present danger, and the official premise describes a force trying to drag Todd into the afterlife. The basement becomes the point where that force finally takes him.

The entity can also represent Todd’s incurable disease. His medical decline begins before or alongside the manifestations, and the force’s gradual isolation and destruction of Todd resembles an illness that cannot be reasoned with or stopped. From this perspective, the horror imagery gives Indy a form for something he cannot understand: watching his owner disappear while remaining devoted to him.
Why both explanations fit
Good Boy builds its uncertainty through form. Indy has intense sensory awareness but no human language, so the audience receives impressions rather than reliable explanations. The film’s fragmented human scenes and obscured figures prevent a clean distinction between possession, sickness, grief, and ghostly activity. The ambiguity is an intentional feature of the story, not an unanswered mythology that the finale secretly solves.

What happens to Indy at the end?
After Todd vanishes, Indy encounters what appears to be Todd’s spirit, memory, or emotional presence calling him back toward the darkness. Indy does not follow. He chooses the light, escapes the house, and leaves with Vera.
This is not presented as Indy defeating the entity. Todd cannot be saved, whether his death is understood as disease, supernatural capture, or a combination of both. Indy’s final act is survival and release: he refuses to die alongside Todd or remain trapped in the place associated with Todd’s suffering.
What does the ending mean?
The finale is primarily about grief rather than solving a puzzle. Indy’s loyalty makes following Todd seem like the ultimate expression of love, but the film treats continued life as the healthier completion of that bond. Leaving with Vera turns the final movement into mourning and adaptation instead of a victory over evil.
Director Ben Leonberg has described the film as “a love story” from Indy’s point of view. He has also called Indy’s departure the correct resolution of the dog’s hero’s journey. Those comments clarify why the ending is emotionally decisive even though the entity remains unexplained: Indy’s choice, not the force’s taxonomy, completes the story.

Bandit was Todd’s grandfather’s dog. He disappeared after the grandfather’s death and reaches Indy as a warning presence. Bandit’s traces connect the old household tragedy to Todd’s situation and foreshadow the danger of remaining with an owner who is dying.
The film presents Bandit as an apparition or ghostly guide, not as evidence of a fully explained afterlife system. His role is thematic and cautionary: he shows Indy what can happen when a dog remains tied to a dead or disappearing master.

Why is the story told through Indy?
Leonberg made the film around his real dog, Indy, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. He and his wife filmed in the house where they lived for roughly three years and more than 400 days, shaping scenes around Indy’s spontaneous behavior rather than conventional actor-and-animal cues. Leonberg has said, “He has no idea he’s in a movie.”
That production approach supports the movie’s viewpoint. Indy’s reactions feel immediate, but his inability to interpret human illness or supernatural events leaves the audience in the same uncertainty. A scene that might be medically ordinary to a person can look like a terrifying transformation when experienced by a frightened, devoted dog.
