He survived the storm and later described the night to CBS News. His nickname refers to Lieutenant Dan Taylor, the character played by Gary Sinise in Forrest Gump.
Who is Lieutenant Dan?
Joseph Malinowski was identified by CBS News as a 54-year-old Tampa resident known locally as “Lieutenant Dan.” Inside Edition described the boat he lived on as a 20-foot sailboat; that length is a media-reported description, not an independently verified specification.
The nickname is a reference to Lieutenant Dan Taylor from Forrest Gump. Malinowski is a real person, not the fictional character.
Did Lieutenant Dan survive Hurricane Milton?
Yes. CBS News interviewed Malinowski after Hurricane Milton and reported that he survived. He said Milton was less difficult for him than Hurricane Helene, which had affected the region shortly beforehand.

His survival is a fact about this individual event, not evidence that staying aboard a small boat during a hurricane is safe or a decision others can reliably repeat.
Why did he stay on his boat?
Malinowski told CBS News correspondent Cristian Benavides that he was not afraid and attributed his decision to his faith. CBS quoted him saying, “God told me to come here.” Those statements explain his personal reasoning; they are not expert safety guidance.

What he said happened during the storm
According to Malinowski’s account, the boat was repeatedly pushed against a harbor wall. He told CBS, “I was getting bashed against this wall, so I went out and cut my anchor line to get away from it.” He characterized the night as “pretty mellow” and also said, “I’m not scared of anything.” These are his descriptions of the experience, not independent measurements of the conditions or the boat’s performance.
What happened before landfall?
Pre-storm reporting contained a discrepancy. A FOX 13 report said Tampa Mayor Jane Castor stated that Malinowski had been taken to a shelter. A FOX 13 reporter later found him aboard his boat and spoke with him. The available accounts do not establish a definitive rescue-and-return sequence, so it is more accurate to describe the public record as conflicting before landfall.

How strong was Hurricane Milton?
Milton’s intensity changed substantially during its approach to Florida. The National Hurricane Center’s October 8, 2024 advisory described Milton as a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 160 mph over the Gulf and included Tampa Bay in hurricane and storm-surge warnings. At landfall, the National Hurricane Center’s 8:30 p.m. EDT October 9 update said Milton came ashore near Siesta Key as an extremely dangerous Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph.

The hurricane center’s final tropical cyclone report said hurricane conditions affected Florida’s west coast from Clearwater Beach and Tampa southward through Sarasota to near Venice. A storm weakening before landfall can still produce life-threatening wind, surge, waves and debris.

What is known—and not known—about his boat?
News reports identify the vessel as a small sailboat and, in Inside Edition’s account, give a length of 20 feet. The available reporting does not establish its exact model, seaworthiness, structural condition or equipment. Malinowski’s interview is a personal account rather than a controlled evaluation of how the boat performed.
Why the story drew attention
Images and interviews of a man refusing to leave a small boat during a major hurricane spread widely because the decision contrasted sharply with official warnings and evacuation messaging. His nickname, his distinctive appearance and his direct comments made him a memorable figure in coverage of Milton. The central facts remain limited: he stayed aboard, described cutting his anchor line after being pushed against a wall, and survived.

Was staying aboard safe?
Nothing in the reported account demonstrates that it was safe. Milton had reached Category 5 strength earlier in the Gulf, was still a dangerous Category 3 at landfall, and generated hurricane conditions along Florida’s west coast. Evacuation and shelter decisions should follow local emergency-management instructions, not one person’s outcome or confidence.
