1. Uncut Gems (2019)
Josh and Benny Safdie’s pressure-cooker thriller gives Sandler his most complete dramatic showcase. Howard Ratner’s compulsive gambling, hustling and panic are not softened into a conventional redemption arc; Sandler makes the character repellent, funny, charismatic and frightening in the same scene. The film’s abrasive sound design and escalating structure turn his restless energy into the movie’s engine.
Rotten Tomatoes’ guide lists the film at 91% Tomatometer and 52% Popcornmeter in a 2026 snapshot. That gap is useful context: critics strongly embraced the craft and performance, while audience response was more divided. Neither figure captures the film’s importance as proof that Sandler can carry an auteur-led thriller.

2. Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
Paul Thomas Anderson redirects Sandler’s volatility into a lonely romantic character. Barry Egan is awkward, angry and emotionally damaged, but the performance remains open to tenderness. Anderson’s saturated visuals, propulsive score and surreal detours make this unlike any standard Sandler comedy, while the actor’s recognizable outbursts become part of a carefully controlled dramatic design.
It is the crucial bridge between Sandler’s mid-1990s comic stardom and the more adventurous work that followed. The film ranks just below Uncut Gems because its influence is enormous, even if its deliberately strange tone is less universally accessible.
3. The Wedding Singer (1998)
Robbie Hart is the role that revealed how naturally Sandler’s comic persona could support romantic feeling. The jokes are broad, but Robbie’s heartbreak and decency give the movie a durable emotional center. Sandler and Drew Barrymore create an easy rapport, and the 1980s setting supplies a stream of memorable musical and visual details without overwhelming the romance.
Rotten Tomatoes identifies it as one of Sandler’s beloved romantic comedies. Its staying power comes from balance: it is unmistakably a Sandler comedy, yet it gives its lead a sincere reason to grow.

4. Happy Gilmore (1996)
Happy Gilmore distills early Sandler into a perfect comic mechanism: an angry hockey player who discovers an unconventional golf swing and treats every obstacle as a personal challenge. The physical gags, hostile one-liners and sports-movie underdog structure work because the film keeps escalating without losing its simple emotional goal.

Alongside Billy Madison, it established the broad-comedy identity that casual viewers still associate with Sandler. Happy Gilmore ranks higher because its central sport, antagonists and set pieces fit together more cleanly.
5. Hustle (2022)
Hustle is Sandler’s most accessible mature sports performance. As scout Stanley Sugerman, he plays exhaustion, loyalty and professional frustration without turning the character into a caricature. The basketball sequences provide momentum, while the relationship between Stanley and prospect Bo Cruz gives the film its emotional stakes.
Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 guide places Hustle first in its editorial ranking, with a 94% Tomatometer and 93% Popcornmeter. Those are platform snapshots rather than permanent consensus, but they reflect the film’s unusually broad appeal: a polished sports drama that still feels recognizably like Sandler.

6. The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017)
Noah Baumbach’s family dramedy asks Sandler to play Danny Meyerowitz as a passive, wounded adult rather than an obvious scene-stealer. His awkward pauses and defensive jokes communicate years of resentment toward his father and more successful half-brother. The performance gains power by refusing a loud transformation.
Rotten Tomatoes lists the film at 92% Tomatometer and 72% Popcornmeter in its 2026 snapshot. Its critic-audience split is smaller than Uncut Gems‘ but still shows how a formally talkative, indie family drama can challenge viewers expecting conventional Sandler comedy.

7. 50 First Dates (2004)
Peter Segal’s high-concept romance pairs Sandler’s persistent marine veterinarian with Drew Barrymore’s character, who loses her recent memories each day. The premise requires charm and patience, and Sandler supplies both while keeping the comedy moving through repetition. The film is lighter than Punch-Drunk Love, but it confirms how effective his relaxed romantic persona can be.
Its memory-loss setup also creates an ethical complication that modern viewers may debate. The movie’s enduring appeal rests on the chemistry and the unusually committed structure, not on pretending every element has aged perfectly.
8. Billy Madison (1995)
Sandler’s first major starring vehicle turns inherited wealth and arrested development into a surreal schoolroom adventure. Billy’s childish behavior is the joke, but the movie’s commitment to visual nonsense, rapid-fire insults and bizarre side characters gives it a distinctive comic world.
It is less polished than Happy Gilmore, yet more representative of the raw persona that made Sandler a breakout star. The film’s quotability and fan affection have outlasted its modest critical reputation.
9. Funny People (2009)
Judd Apatow’s long-form show-business dramedy casts Sandler as George Simmons, a successful comedian confronting illness, loneliness and the damage caused by treating people as material. Sandler can play the character’s arrogance because the performance also allows flashes of fear and regret.

- EASILY DECORATE any space to create the perfect decor for a party, bedroom, bathroom, kids room, living room, office, dorm, and more
The film’s uneven length and tonal shifts keep it from ranking higher, but its best scenes show Sandler using his public comic image as dramatic baggage. It is a valuable middle point between his commercial comedies and later serious roles.
10. Big Daddy (1999)
Big Daddy builds a conventional responsibility arc around Sonny Koufax, a slacker who temporarily cares for a child. Sandler’s comic selfishness gradually gives way to believable affection, and the film benefits from keeping Sonny’s immaturity visible even as he tries to improve.
It does not have the formal ambition of the films above, but it captures the late-1990s moment when Sandler’s persona could support both outrageous jokes and a mainstream emotional payoff.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.11. The Waterboy (1998)
Bobby Boucher is one of Sandler’s most exaggerated creations: a sheltered water boy whose intense devotion to football becomes an unlikely athletic gift. The accent, vocal tics and physical reactions are deliberately cartoonish, and the movie succeeds when that single-mindedness drives the sports story.
Its humor is more repetitive and its character work thinner than the other entries here, but its place in Sandler’s popular comic canon is secure. It represents the maximalist studio-comedy phase that coexisted with the warmer The Wedding Singer.

How the films show Sandler’s range
Broad comedy
Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy rely on heightened voices, physical comedy and escalating set pieces. They are the clearest expression of the persona Sandler established as a star.
Romance
The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates use that persona more gently, pairing comic immaturity with genuine vulnerability. Punch-Drunk Love strips the approach down to its anxious emotional core.
Drama and auteur-led work
The Meyerowitz Stories and Uncut Gems place Sandler inside filmmaker-driven worlds with different rhythms and demands. One favors subdued family resentment; the other weaponizes his nervous energy.
Sports films
Happy Gilmore turns sport into cartoon combat, while Hustle treats basketball as a workplace and mentorship story. The contrast shows how much Sandler’s performance style can change without losing his connection with audiences.

Time Out’s July 22, 2025 selection includes choices such as Funny People, 50 First Dates and Hustle. Different lists emphasize critics’ scores, innovation, nostalgia, romance or rewatchability, so a different order is not necessarily a factual contradiction.
