Spotify Jam is a live listening session, not a conventional collaborative playlist. A Premium subscriber hosts a shared queue, while participants add tracks, receive group-based recommendations and see who contributed each song. Free listeners may join and add music to an in-person Jam hosted by Premium; joining a remote Jam requires Premium.
What is Spotify Jam?
Spotify announced Jam on September 26, 2023, describing it as “a personalized, real-time listening session for your group to tune into together.” It combines synchronized group listening with a shared queue and Spotify personalization.
During a session, Spotify uses the group’s overlapping tastes to recommend music. Everyone can add songs from their own device, and participants can see which person added each track. The host retains control over the session, including participant management, queue reordering and song removal.
That makes Jam different from Spotify’s other social playlist tools: it is designed for listening together now, rather than editing a playlist that people may play separately later.

Spotify support states that Premium is required to start and host a Jam. Free users can join and add songs when the host’s session is in person. Remote participation is a Premium-only function.
How to start a Spotify Jam
- Choose music. Open a playlist or song you want the group to hear.
- Open the Jam control. Use the speaker or device control, or open the track or playlist menu, then select Start a Jam.
- Invite listeners. The host can display a QR code, share an invitation link or use Bluetooth proximity to invite nearby phones. Supported devices may also show a Jam prompt.
- Manage the session. Add or remove participants, reorder the queue and remove tracks as needed.
The exact controls can vary by device, but the host must remain the Premium account that created the session.
How to join and add music
Joining in person
Scan the host’s QR code, open the shared link, bring a nearby phone close enough for Bluetooth-based discovery or accept a supported-device prompt. Once connected, choose songs from your own Spotify account and add them to the common queue.

Joining remotely
Remote Jams are for participants who are not physically with the host. Every remote participant needs Premium. Invitations can be sent through a share link and, in supported markets and accounts, through Spotify Messages.
What participants can see
Jam shows the shared queue, group recommendations and the person who added each track. Playback remains a single group session rather than separate copies of a playlist.

Request to Jam
A Premium user can invite a connected friend or family member into a remote Jam directly from a Messages chat. After the invitation is accepted, both participants can add songs to the shared queue.
Listening Activity
Listening Activity is opt-in. It lets you show selected contacts what you are currently playing or recently played, making it easier to start a conversation or invite someone to listen.

Which devices support Jam?
Spotify expanded Jam beyond phones over time. The current support scope includes desktop, mobile, TV, Android Auto, CarPlay and compatible speakers, with some differences between in-person and remote sessions.

Availability can depend on the app version, account type, device and whether the session is local or remote. A car integration should be used only when it is safe and legal to operate the vehicle.

Spotify documents Jam support for smart speakers and most Bluetooth speakers. For an in-person gathering, pair the host’s phone or another playback device with a Bluetooth speaker, then start the Jam from Spotify. The speaker does not need a special “Jam” feature; it needs to work as a normal Spotify playback destination.

- Bluetooth speaker: the simplest option for portable group listening.
- Smart speaker: suitable when it is supported as a Spotify playback device on the host’s account.
- Phone or computer speakers: workable for a small group but less effective in a larger room.
Participants still use their own phones to browse and add songs; the shared speaker is the common playback output.

Spotify said in 2023 that more than 45 million Blends had been created and that users had spent more than 200 million hours listening to Collaborative Playlists in the preceding month. Those figures describe the popularity of the related features, not Jam usage.

Practical limits to know before starting
- A Free account cannot create or host a Jam.
- Free listeners can participate only when a Premium host’s Jam is in person.
- Remote participation requires Premium for the joining listener.
- Device menus differ; look for Start a Jam in the speaker/device control or track and playlist menus.
- Speaker compatibility affects audio output, not whether the shared queue exists.
- Messages-based Request to Jam depends on Messages being available for the account and market.
